The #topic.info and #lounge.info channels are not for role-playing. Occasional "/me"ing is okay, but full-blown scenarios tend to generate lots of lines that aren't interesting to anyone not involved in it. You can create a temporary channel to use by typing /join #some_name_you_make_up, or use /query PMs if it's just two people.

While roleplaying in general isn't a bad thing, it's a fun hobby that I practice myself, I feel like it should be reserved for places where you don't have the newbies coming in; the official IRC channels. As is, it's going to turn away perfectly serious adults who just want to have a look into this tulpa community; people who could be smart, constructive members of this place. There is also the fact that the people who do the more overt and extravagant role playing in public are usually the kind (please prove me wrong) who contribute absolutely nothing to the community itself. Now I wonder, should we accept the ones who make fools out of themselves and make the rest of us look like fools as well, or temper their behaviour and restrict it to a point where they won't be turning away people who will start seeing every one of us as a bunch of stupid role players?

In my opinion, using /me in the main chatrooms (#tulpa.info and #tulpa.lounge) is entirely unnecessary, and does little more than turn away some people. If you just have to broadcast to the world what you look like or what you're doing, you can describe it normally, with words. Nobody else on the internet every has a problem with "oh no, I can't roleplay, I can't describe what I'm doing". You just tell them what you're doing. The RPing on chatrooms and in the forums only serves to give yourself and the community as a whole a bad reputation, and you can do it to your heart's content with friends in private.

The rules already state things against roleplaying, but right now the rule is vague and it's hard to draw a line. Personally, I'd like to see all /me-ing and that kind of nonsense going from the main chatrooms, so there's no ambiguity, but for now, all I can do is ask: Could you please not roleplay in the main chatrooms? It looks stupid to outsiders, annoys some insiders, and there's no need to do it. I would like to see the rules adapted slightly to just ban /me from the official channels. It's a clearer rule than the one above, one that leaves little room for interpretation.

Some of us want to turn this place into a more scientific, serious community, and this could be a small step in that direction.

Feel free to ask me anything.

Suffering is self-imposed. Don't let it control you.

In Polish community we had similiar problem. Semi-official channel (excluded from links for newbies) just for RP helped.

Be rational.

Why all this sudden talk a out the RP rules?

We ha a new girl show up and demand the RP rule be changed for her in her first day. She's already left a sour taste in a few mouths.

Like I don't get what's so hard to grasp about this being a science based community and not a playground. If you want to role play go start a just for fun tulpa website and let the BS congregate over there.

Also I meant to hit yes I accidentaly voted no but yeah getting rid of /me would be great

I don't think that there's a problem with occasionally using /me. However, using it to describe yourself, your mood, or anything like that is definitely excessive, and would be better if described normally, so I agree with that.

Many members have come in with things like that and have derailed serious discussion, so it's a bit of a pain to have to wait for all of that to go away before the chat can be pulled back into what it was. A few people that I talk to on Skype say that they don't participate or don't even go in the chats because of how spammy things like that can look.

Having a separate channel for that might be the best thing right now.

I would personally be willing to accept a change in the way of no actual roleplaying. I don't think there is really a problem with the occasional /me, especially when used for comedic effect, and not for attention-grabbing purposes. If someone is treading the lines of roleplaying, then I do think it is an issue, and would likely do something about it, already.

Either way, I'm open to hearing more opinions.

"If this can be avoided, it should. If it can't, then it would be better if it could be. If it happened and you're thinking back to it, try and think back further. Try not to avoid it with your mind. If any of this is possible, it may be helpful. If not, it won't be."

I agree with kiah, I dont see a problem with the occasional /me if its used for a purpose other than roleplay

there could be a roleplay channel if need be, but I've honestly not seen any roleplay or want for roleplay when I'm in the IRC

*Someone tells a funny joke*

/me is rolling on the floor

“Eragon looked back at him, confused. "I don't understand."

"Of course you don't," said Brom impatiently. "That's why I'm teaching you and not the other way around.”

Agreed with Kiah -- allow some occasional /me, but disallow it for roleplay actions.
