(Almost) Sharing Qualia

Qualia's a pretty word, not quite what I wanna say but I don't know what to say instead. So this won't be the same experience for everyone (haha qualia), but I wanted to talk about how having other people in your head who experience things differently can help you experience them differently too. It's a sorta half-way, you aren't experiencing the exact same thing as them, but at least in our system we can remember/understand how each other thought or felt about somethin'. And we're all pretty different so that means we collectively have a lot more experience with experiences than normal!

What made me think of this was a song I found that I thought Tewi might like. It's a remix of her theme to start with, and it was all nature-y which I know she likes, and I liked the "Say yeaah-yeaaah" chorus a lot. But I wasn't sure if she'd actually like it or not, it's not like songs we usually like. Oh wait

first, sorry. Anyways she listened to it a few days later (switched, if that matters), and she instantly liked it a lot! She told me it might be her second favorite song, right from the first listen. That surprised me and made me really happy! But, that's not the point.

So like, I listened to the song earlier, and it is so much cooler now! The way Tewi like.. thought of/experienced it was a lot more intense than when I did, and now I hear it like that too and it's 10x more awesome. So you see what I mean with the "almost" sharing qualia thing. I'm not literally her so I can't have her same experience, but it's sorta half-way because now I can experience it like she did. Sort of. I don't have the same personal attachment to this stuff as her but.. just the feelings and all that associated with the song, there's different ones than the ones I first had, and they're different enough to make a difference!

So I dunno, I'm not just talking about music obviously, and you don't have to switch to have this effect either. It's sort of like the "Tulpas can provide a second, separate perspective from yours" thing, but more about experiencing that perspective yourself because of them. If that makes sense? Idk, I just thought it was crazy how differently I heard the song after Tewi had listened to it so I wanted to talk about that here. You guys can talk about whatever ya' want with sharing qualia/experiences/whatever, this was just the only example I had right now.

Two years later edit: I feel like we coulda talked about like, memories being shared too, even if I couldn't experience what a system member of mine did I can remember how they experienced it and that's also much closer to sharing qualia than humans can normally do

I mean, I experience songs differently on my own sometimes. Like, Battle Against a True Hero seems so much cooler a song every time I listen to it (I'm cancer). But, even with Battle Against a True Hero, my tulpas don't care nearly as much about the songs because it's missing the emotional impact of that particular moment the song hits. So, there's that.

I also experienced something like this when Tula once looked at the parking lot outside our home. The way the lights reflected off the asphalt recently rained on struck her as "pretty" and she just... stared at it. Whereas before all I saw was "Yup, parking lot," but then I started kinda seeing things from her perspective, as ridiculous as I thought finding a parking lot pretty to be. Um, that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

But yeah, that's a thing

The System:

It's too big.

ha, that's what she said.

I've experienced this before with music. I've listened to a song with Ivy and it wasn't that great but we realised that Raven might like it.

The next day I listened to it with Raven and she loved it enough that it made me like it and now will listen to it occasionally when before I wouldn't have.

I think it has to do with like what Ponytail was saying. Everyone perceives what they enjoy for different reasons. With tulpa it is possible to share their feelings and why they enjoy it on a much deeper level than with another person. By doing this you then appreciate the beauty for the reasons they do and begin to enjoy it.

It also explains why many people state that they have become a lot more open to new ideas after tulpamancy besides simply experiencing a phenomenon they would have thought impossible.

"My lover's got humour,

She's the giggle at a funeral,

Knows everybody's disapproval,

I should've worshipped her sooner."

I think we've experienced this before, except it was me who influenced my tulps. This usually happens when we are eating, especially with myrtle.

Actually, this sometimes happen to me whomever is in front. For example myrtle and with eating, my whole perspective on how i eat changed because of myrtle's way of how she eat them. She usually would like to savoir the flavor if the food first rather than chowing it down immediately (which i usually do because food.).

When she told me to try and taste the flavor first i understood what she meant and enjoy my meals even more.

Hello! I am nihi, i have 3 tulpas

It also happened to me with music. Usually, i prefer instrumental type of music and no other else. Nihi likes electronic type of music, cherry likes punk or rock and myrtle likes any relaxing type of music.

I've noticed that my taste in music change as well. After listening the same genre with what others like. I started liking it as well, unlike before where i do not pay attention to it that much.

Hello! I am one of Nihi's Tulpas! It is very nice to meet you! :D

I think this is more a perspective thing than a qualia thing.

you indirectly share your qualia by making the other person experience things like you! It's not just perspective, you can't just look at music differently, there's all sorts of reasons it makes you feel how it does and Tewi provided the mental "reasons" to our mind so that I automatically experienced the song differently later, or something. Again I still don't take that stuff as seriously as her so idk what's exactly going on, but, a "different perspective" means interpreting something differently and that means experiencing it differently and in this case(s) that means indirectly sharing qualia!

But what you are sharing is a memory, not a sensation. We can't even know if we can experience our headmates' sensations ourselves or not. That's not qualia, that's perspective. Reasons something is enjoyable is not the direct experience of the enjoyable thing.

Giving someone your game to play opens up possibly experiencing what you did, but moreso just having their own experience in that environment (ie sharing a song with a friend). And sharing exact qualia would mean literally being that person, 'cus that's what qualia means. I said almost sharing qualia because it's a way of sharing an experience that isn't available to people outside your system, by sharing how you experienced something so someone else can experience it in roughly the same way. It's not sharing qualia but it's not just sharing the thing either. It's like 50% qualia. 'Cus I never would've experienced the thing that way without someone else's experience of it being in our brain already. That's why I said "almost" "indirectly" sharing qualia, because you're basically setting it up to be experienced like you did, but it's not exactly like you did and it's still up to how they experience it. Like... 50%. If you're an optimist, 50% is "almost"!

Anyways I wouldn't call it a memory, unless literally everything in the past stored in your brain is a memory and not just how your brain is. I wasn't remembering how Tewi heard the song, I was just hearing the song with different context than I myself gave it I guess, and that led to me experiencing it like she did where I hadn't before. Indirectly sharing the experience almost! See?

You know, my host dislikes Ugly Betty. But it was really fun watching with family, because she could feel the excitement and interest of her family. Also, playing a game or writing a blurb is kind of fun. But it is really fun posting it online for others to see. And you may not like a particular trinket, song, or image, but you feel absolutely wonderful looking at it because someone you care about gave it to you.

But ultimately, there is just something about talking to an excited wine expert or botanist, and their unique perspective and the details they drive you to look at that makes you have a whole new appreciation for wine or flowers.
