"Tulpae"

Can anyone actually defend saying "Tulpae" instead of "Tulpas"? I definitely don't want to bother people with something that's not a problem in their eyes, 'cus then it's like I made it a problem, but it still seems like a big one to me. Our system's been on Tulpa.info for a long time (2014), but more important than register date we've also read every non-PR/forum-games/art thread and post since we joined. Yep, like, literally anything new after that we read (and a ton of research on older stuff by my host when he joined ofc), and we've refreshed View Today's Posts probably 15-25 times a day since then, maybe more idk I don't count. And uh, after all this time it still really bothers us when people say "Tulpae" :X

There's at least three really big problems with the word/people using it: First, it will never stop confusing people new to tulpamancy whether they should be saying tulpas or tulpae, and to this point we've never had an answer (in the past, polls on the forum have mostly decided both are acceptable, with a bit more saying tulpas).

Second, the word is Tibetan, not even close to Latin or Greek in origin, and Waffles talked about that here (according to Sands who linked it anyway). So aside from "it sounds cool" I've never actually heard a good reason to use it before. And uh... lots of reasons against.

And thirdly relatedlyyyy - can you even pronounce it? Can anyone pronounce "ae" correctly? The answer is no, 'cause there is no right answer! (Scroll down to the purple "Answer" header)

Look up pronunciations of random -ae words (there's so many less than I thought though) and you'll still be confused, since this is like the first result on Google for pronouncing ae https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/40671/pronunciation-of-words-ending-with-ae (scroll down to answers, again)

The most common answer to most -ae related questions is that just adding "s" instead is acceptable these days! Like people are definitely saying antennas instead of antennae these days, as far as I can hear. Which is probably because people don't even know how to pronounce -ae because there isn't a right way to pronounce -ae (but as the letter "E" isn't wrong). Also I literally already forgot.. Tulpa was never related to latin at all so there's still no reason to say tulpae anyways. Since we're speaking in English here, like Waffles said, either we should use the original language's pluralization or our own. People only said "-ae" because "-ae" is just "how you pluralize old fancy words from different languages", really. Most of the time in English that's true because of where our own language came from but we definitely shouldn't do it to words from other languages that never used -ae! Just use an s, right? Or what they used, which I guess was.. uh, just "tulpa" with other words in context implying plural or not, I think. But "tulpa" as a plural isn't really on the table since no one here says that at all. So, tulpas?

Just my thoughts on that! I know that to people who use "tulpae" usually this isn't even a problem in their minds and so it's just me making it a problem, I'm sorry, and I guess I'm not telling anyone to stop saying it if you want to. But I do want to influence new users to say tulpas instead so we can get closer to just using one logical term, and also anyone who is okay with using either to do it too.

But in the end I pronounce tulpae "tul-pay" and say tups (short for "tuppers", short for "tupperware" lol) half the time anyway so I don't mean to make this too serious. Just putting out a preference from a very tulpa-y system with some backing logic for newer members on this subject, since most discussions I saw were from 2013 and went "Tulpae sounds cooler" "No, tulpae sounds stupid"

It's tulpii. Also, we prefer bumping old threads.

-ae is pronounced like the -ae in antennae. /ænˈtɛni/ /ænˈtɛnaɪ/

So, um, what is the plural of sprul-pa?

Another question. How can some people use Tulpa instead of tulpa. I feel I must have confused them since there is a proper noun use of Tulpa. Or my host did.

Bumping old threads doesn't work as well when the times have changed! Have they? I dunno, but the threads I read were old, full of boring back-and-forth. If I were looking into this I would prefer this thread to those! You might not agree but at least know we're totally familiar with forum etiquette I guess.

uh, I guess sprul-pa was transl(iter)ated into tulpa, so we go from there? I don't think we can talk about this stuff without someone who's fluent in the language... Buuuuuuuuut

Sprul-pa's aren't Tulpa.info's Tulpas, because we don't see them as spiritual things or whatever. It's more like we took the general concept and made our own as far as I can tell, so it's okay to make a new word for it in the process. Preeetty sure that's the only reason tulpas and tulpae are acceptable in the first place. And if that's your argument for this topic, then the answer is both are acceptable and tulpas is slightly preferred! So say some old polls from years ago.

Well, Tulpa would be a proper noun, so you're talking less about any individual tulpa and more about.. well, you're writing it as if Tulpa is the name of a subject or practice or something I guess. If you aren't then it's just improper grammar. Tulpamancy can be capitalized but Tulpa not so much. I was gonna say unless we're talking about your name, but you didn't capitalize it!

aaaanyways I didn't want to get all grammar-nazi for no reason. I said why I made the topic already. It's confusing for new members and also tulpae doesn't have a logical reason to BE the modern-day term other than some people like how it sounds. Was kinda just an informational thing. If after five years you think the discussion is still ongoing and productive then I guess this could just be part of an old dumb long thread, but personally I think this is about what the consensus was! Tulpas makes logical sense, tulpae doesn't but since it's basically a new term we made up anyway it doesn't have to not be used, and tulpae is already in popular enough use that most pro-"tulpas"-ers gave up you can still use it if you want. But tulpas is preferred.. I wanna say slightly, but I think it might be more dependent on the community it's being used in.

Also while some people who do studies and stuff about tulpas say tulpae, others (like some GAT members and science-oriented people) are pretty adamant that using -ae for no reason will make it less likely for tulpamancy to be taken seriously. Of course, a lot of them also say the same for "tulpamancy". That's why we don't capitalize it, 'cause it's just a word meaning the practice of making tulpas to us, not an actually proper proper noun.

pretty sure my fun levels are ded from all these posts I made today, I gotta go play some games and listen to some stupidly silly music

As a non native-speaker, "tulpae" confuses me and I also didn't know how to even pronounce it. (I mean, I had Latin in school, but the latin pronounciation is not the same as the english pseudo-latin one, right?)

In german tulpa-tumblrs (which I do not follow but I have looked into once or twice) I have seen the word "Tulpe" used as a slang for tulpa - which is the german word for "tulip". Language is fun. Also, in languages with grammatical genders, you can have endless debates about what gender the word "tulpa" should be.^^

I don't know where, but I think I've read somewhere that Tibetan nouns don't even have a plural form?

Two tulpa. Twolpa? :-D

I have found my new favourite plural.^^

Tulpamancy is kind of fancy.^^ I guess "tulpology" wouldn't really sound good, because the "o" sound is strange for a word that ends in -a. Tulpa theory? Tulpa studies? Tulpalogy? Tulpassion? ^^

We used to use tulpae as certain tulpa elitists got super triggered over it. Also it's in the bio of tulpa.info's Twitter page. We stopped using it when we started voice calling, as it's just clumsy to say out loud.

People capitalize tulpa because that's the fancy thing to do on the Internet these days. Like saying Imposition instead of imposition.

Imposition as the name of a skill I guess, we only really capitalize things for reasons like that, which isn't often

I'm definitely not an elitist because I don't think what other people prefer is wrong and should change, but I do have an opinion/preference that seems reasonable and since I'm still kinda confused new people keep popping up and saying "tulpae" I made this thread so they could be more informed, if they wanna be

People wrongly capitalizing english nouns could also just be german-speaking people writing english. We have a Tendency to do that, you know.^^

I might tend towards being an elitist... but I know just enough about language to know that there is no such thing as wrong spelling on a fundamental level. All the words and phrases we use today were wrong at some time in history. :-)

Do you capitalize other skills like "sewing" or "drawing"?
