There is no try, only do.

Question

Just a piece of advice. Every thing we have done with imposition has basically fallen into one of two camps. Frustrating, and fun. What is the difference?

When it is frustrating, one or both of us is focusing, concentrating on the experience. Trying to see the image more clearly or feel the sensation more strongly. This is exhausting and not fun.

Clarity sometimes slips when we focus on other things instead, but sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it gets stronger. This leads me to propose the idea that you have to stop trying to impose to impose well.

Here, I'll break it down into two groups.

Useful:

--Remembering where you are and what you are touching.

--Experimenting with different feels and textures, such as nails vs flesh.

--Adding tingles, or sharpness, or energy, or pressure to a touch.

--Multitasking while practising.

Not useful:

--Trying to forcefully make the sensation stronger.

--Getting annoyed about how weak it is.

--Paying attention to how strong the sensation is.

this seems to coincide with my experience. The more I focused on 'experiencing' as opposed to 'making' the better my results, and the more I leaned towards not judging or controlling the experience the better the results.

This leads me to propose the idea that you have to stop trying to impose to impose well.

heh, we sure don't have to try very much! Sense of presence man, once you got that it doesn't matter how well the rest goes. Sometimes even our imposition-visualization isn't so great (but it's usually fine by our standards), but that doesn't stop anyone from doing what they wanted to do.

But idk that trying is necessarily a bad thing. I don't remember when I was young very well, but I'm sure Lumi and the others worked on imposition a lot (also by our standards, probably less than what others call a lot), I don't think our passive skill the last year+ or so was the result of not caring about it being good. Like it's still just the same old practice makes better-than-before and lack of use can make it worse over time. But I guess if you're just saying not to get to the point of frustration while working on it, I mean, sure?

Your tip is to focus on enjoying the experience rather than stressing out about how well you're doing! Can't go wrong with that. Ya' just said it in a different way than me.

(Technically your tip is that stressing out about it can actually hinder progress - and so, to make more progress, you might need to focus on enjoying it. Works for me!)

Hi, I'm one of Lumi's tulpas! I like rain and dancing and dancing in the rain and if there's frogs there too that's bonus points.

I think being happy and having fun makes life worth living, so spreading happiness is my number one goal!
