Yesterday, I added a wordfilter for some time, to bring some fun around here (and no, I didn't plan on keeping it, check the Off-topic board for more details).  While this topic isn't about if we should have a wordfilter -- I personally don't believe in using them to seriously enforce anything, but I would like to know how you guys feel about professionalism, and if should be encouraged by the community and enforced by the Administration team.

We all know our roots to this community, and those roots still glimmer through.  Some have argued, "Well, we came from 4chan," but the thing is...  We're not 4chan, and I want to break away from that culture, for a few reasons.

Reason one is first impressions.  Shortly after tupla.info was posted on Dreamviews, a member there signed up to these forums (along with a few other members).  One of his first impressions was in the shoutbox.  It was something like (read from bottom to top):

Dreamviews Member: ...nice community you have here

User4: Go away.

User3:

User1: f**k you motherf***er

User2: Shut the hell up n****r

User1: THIS F**KING SUCKS IT F**K F**K F**K F**K

Great first impressions, aye?  Someone with legit interest in understanding more about tulpæ may be able to make their way to our site, but what if their first impression is pretty much just members throwing the f-bomb around, calling others names (even if they're being "lulzy") and acting overall immature?  We, as another member said, wouldn't be catering to the more serious people trying to understand this stuff, but we'll end up catering to a bunch of teenagers (or something like that, I forget the quote) and won't even be taken seriously.

The second reason, is general respect.  Allow me to quote one section of the rules:

  • In all cases you should respect the members of this community (i.e. treat them just like you want to be treated). Do not post offensive material, do not insult, do not harass, and so further.

The "offensive material" phrase in particular is what I'm referring to.  Some people do find words like "fuck," "n***er," "c*nt" (something I was called in the shoutbox this morning xD), "faggot," et cetera to be offensive.  Besides, they're unneeded anyway.  Being able to have a rich enough vocabulary to express yourself without profanity can be a pretty nice skill, and I would encourage it here.

Third reason is the age group.  While I'm sure a decent amount of members here are over the age of 18, some could be as young as 12 or 13 years old.  I'd like to set a good example for them, you know what I mean?

What exactly is Profane?

To make one thing clear (because I'm sure you're thinking it), I'm not against cursing, and couldn't care less over the occasional "hell," "damn," or "shit."  Matter of fact, you can swear without crossing the line of professionalism, just like you can cross that line without using a single swearword.  In our case though, I think it's safe to say that if it's on this list (thanks bad science!), it's probably profane enough to offend someone.

Now, before you start getting too upset, recall the Off-topic board.  If you want to get your "fix" (I'm looking at you, Irish_ ;)) we could either just make the Off-topic board a "no man's land" cesspool (inb4 you guys say "Let's just remove Off-topic!") where people a free to have topics like this, or if you want, we create a new board like Dreamview's Senseless Banter.  Just set up a little "Vent," know what I mean?

In summary, I would like to see this community holding themselves to higher standards, at least outside the Off-topic board.  We can have professional discussions in the Tulpæ threads without using certain remarks or certain tones.

With that being said, I would like to extend the Forum Rules to include maintaining a professional character, and ceasing from using a profane vocabulary (refer to "What exactly is Profane?"), at least in the Tulpae board and the Shoutbox.

Well. I understand that we want to give a good impression to newcomers. I feel no concern about catering to teenagers.

I think that the best way is to leave things as they are now, with slight changes.

1. Professionalism should absolutely be enforced in general discussion. No strong language (as outlined in that Bad Science list).

2. No word filter anywhere on the site. It is unnecessary and rather childish, and it gives the impression that it's actually needed. We don't want to look like a community where every sentence would have "fuck" in it if it could.

Other than that, threads in General Discussion seem to be focused enough for the time being that nothing further is necessary.

Off-topic should be left alone; no word filters or professionalism standards, but exceedingly strong language should be discouraged.

EDIT: I reserve the right to use "Bollocks" anywhere on this site.

I can get behind these suggestions, and your right to use "Bollocks" is noted.

I would like to agree with your ideas on being professional. Frankly, I just learned about tulpae yesterday I was intrigued enough by the idea to start poking around on here. The main reason I decided to sign up and see if I can't give making one a try is largely due to the fact that the threads I browsed were intelligent conversations and that people wanted to try this as a scientific experiment rather than ranting on about secret magic rituals (and as a Tacomancer I feel qualified to speak on magical rituals). So I guess my point is that this is indeed a good idea to gain the support of people such as myself.

I'm all or nothing, and I flip-flop depending on the context and where I am. I'll try to cutt back. And someone get Logan to read this.

This is definitely needed. I know we are still in the "weeding out the trolls" stage, but having swearwords everywhere doesn't really help topics take a mature route. Dreamviews doesn't have a censorship program going- anyone can swear to their hearts content- people just don't, because if you do people tell you to tone it down and grow up a little. No one really cares if you swear, it's just if you swear for the sake of swearing.

I say no to enforcing it at the moment, though it does seem like a good idea if things get too bad. It seems terrible to me to not have enough self-respect to at least be mature when discussing life changing topics, and having to enforce professionalism and the like just seems so wrong to me.

Eventually the riff raff will be filtered out, and if not, then go for it. Enforce it. I'd have no problem with that.

It may be a good idea to enforce a stricter level of professionalism in the research board than in the others (not that it seems to have a problem).
