Mafia I: Catching Kira

Recommended Posts

Mafia has been really successful on some other forums I frequent, so I thought we might try it here. (Sorry about the wall of text, but this is a little more complicated than your average forum game.)

(Note: You do not have to be familiar with Death Note to play this game. It's just fun to have a theme for games like this, and Death Note is a theme that both fits very well, and seems to be very popular on this forum. The story will not be the same as Death Note, and it will not spoil the story of Death Note, but it will be similar -- think of it as something that could have happened in the Death Note Universe. If you enjoy this game, you'll probably enjoy Death Note. And if you enjoy Death Note, you'll probably enjoy this game. And if this goes well, perhaps we'll have Mafia II: Murder in Equestria, or Mafia II: The Killers of Alternia next.)

The story:

[hidden]An abnormally large number of criminals have been dying of heart attacks. It is widely believed that these deaths have been caused by supernatural powers possessed by a single person, known to the public as "Kira". Nobody knows the true identity of Kira. Some hail Kira as a hero, while others deride Kira as a monster. One thing is certain however: Kira is the most successful mass murderer in the history of the world.

After an anonymous tip, wiretaps were placed in a certain building, and on several occasions the police heard two voices discussing who they were going to kill. Without fail, every person these two voices mentioned died of a heart attack within the next 24 hours. Following this revelation, everyone seen entering or leaving that building has been detained by the police.

So now six people are being held in a secure holding facility. Everybody knows that two of them are killing people together as Kira -- but nobody knows which two.

An anonymous note found on the first day of detainment made it clear that Kira will kill one person every night until everyone is released. So far, the police have refused to accede to Kira's demands. The six prisoners held a meeting and decided that their best chance of getting out alive is to kill Kira before Kira kills them. Every day they will vote on who to kill, or maybe vote not to kill anyone at all. Meanwhile, the two people known as Kira will be meeting in secret, and deciding which person to kill.[/hidden]

INTRODUCTION

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to lynch or kill all mafia members (i.e. the Kira group) before they outnumber the rest of the town (i.e. the prisoners). It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking.

The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game.

RULES

0. The GM reserves the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at his discretion.

1. All players must vote at least once per game day.

2. All players are forbidden from posting screenshots of their role PMs.

3. All players are forbidden from using encryption.

4. All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing.

5. All players are forbidden from editing or deleting previous posts of theirs.

6. All players are forbidden from cheating.

7. All players are required to play to win.

8. All roles are selected randomly.

ELABORATION OF RULES

[hidden]

0. I can't know in advance who will try to break or bend rules, or how. So, as situations arise, I will resolve them as closely to the intention of the written rules as I can, and will provide a public explanation of why and how I chose to take such action.

1. Everyone who signs up for this game must post in this thread (with a vote) at least once every game day. If you don't think you can participate to that extent, please don't sign up.

2. This is more a formality than anything: all role PMs have been posted in the setup information later in this post, and all players (regardless of alignment) will receive identical copies of the innocent prisoner role PM. The point of this rule is to forbid "gaming" the role PMs to determine alignments; this is a game of reading people, not outguessing the GM.

3. Encryption is defined as posting an encoded message on public channels which an average person would require outside tools to decode. It is perfectly acceptable to leave "hidden messages" in your posts (for example, spelling out "GODS OF DEATH LOVE APPLES" with the first letters of every sentence), but as a rule of thumb, if you don't think the average player could decode it without a decryption service, don't post it.

4. All in-game communications should be kept within the thread. The Kiras may PM each other, and PMs to/from the GM (me!) are allowed; aside from this, there should be no other forms of private messaging.

5. Don't edit or delete your posts. Maybe all you're doing is fixing a misspelling, but all we can see is that the post was edited. That makes it look like you passed a secret message, and then removed the message when you thought the right person had received it. Make sure your messages are exactly the way you want them to appear *before* you post them.

6. This is a catch-all rule intended to preserve the spirit of the game. If you're considering saying or doing something that may be against the spirit of the game, PM me about it before saying/doing it and I'll let you know whether it's allowed or not.

7. This rule simply means that your actions should in some conceivable way advance your win condition as stated in your role PM. This rule is somewhat subjective, because the difference between a mistake and sabotage is sometimes hard to determine; I will err away from assuming malevolence where reasonably possible. This also means that if you need to leave the game for any reason, you should not simply drop out, but should message me first so I can determine the best course of action.

8. I will determine all of the roles randomly. Maybe I'll roll dice, maybe I'll just refresh jean-luc's avatar. Whichever I do, I won't be choosing people's roles, and people won't be choosing their own roles. So don't think that begging and pleading will get you the role you want.[/hidden]

PENALTIES

The penalty for breaking one of the above rules is decided at the GM's discretion, up to and including immediate removal from the game and/or sanctions from future games. Removal and/or sanction are instruments of last resort and will be used only if absolutely necessary. A player removed from the game may or may not have their role revealed on removal, depending on the circumstances surrounding their removal.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SPAM

Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting; or, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game) is not banned by rule in this game. A mechanic exists to curb any advantage that spamming as a tactic may confer; please reference the "VOTING" section below for more information. Suffice to say that spamming isn't worth anyone's time in this setup, and it is frowned upon, so while you may not be *banned* from doing it, you still shouldn't do it.

VOTING

There are two levels of voting in this game. The first level of voting is for whom you intend to kill. Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes (pound signs / number signs / hashtags) before your intended vote target. (EX: ##VOTE Raye Penber) You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as I can understand who you're referencing you're good. If you don't use double octothorpes then I won't see it when I ctrl+f through the thread and your vote may not be counted.

The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days are set to 48 hours long, and nights to 24 hours long; however, players may instead elect to end the day as soon as a majority is reached (called a "quick hammer" or simply "hammer"). Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes before the word end. (EX: ##END) The game will switch to the hammer mechanic for the duration of that day once a majority of players choose to do so.

If you are not able to vote before the hammer is dropped, you will not be penalized for failing to vote during that day.

If two or more players are tied at day's end, the player with the oldest vote on him/her will be killed.

REPLACEMENTS

A player wishing to drop out may be replaced with another person if the need arises before the end of the first day. Replacement is not guaranteed, and after the first day no replacement requests will be accepted for balance purposes.

TURN DURATION

This game's days will last 48 hours and nights will last 24 hours, unless cut short by in-game mechanics (e.g. hammer). Days and nights might last a little longer if they end at and odd time when I'm not available to post. Extensions may be granted at my discretion, but don't count on it.

THE GAMEMASTER

The GM for this game is sushi. PM me with any concerns (yes this is allowed) and I'll get back to you ASAP.

Yeah, I think so too. But there doesn't seem to be much interest. I kinda had a feeling that would happen.

Well I'm interested. Give me a while to read what this is about and I might join.

Okay, count me in. I just have one problem though. I have a tendency to heavily edit my posts after I make them, usually to clarify the message I was trying to convey. It's a bad habit. I'm not entirely sure if I'll be able to stop myself from making one or two quick edits over the course of this game. You don't have to make exceptions for my sake, but it would be best if you kept this in mind.

A smaller format could work well, but we'd still need more than two. I guess I should try recruiting.

You could use your signature to advertise. Or you could spam threads and hope nobody catches you. Whatever you think works best.

Sorry, I haven't been very active here lately. But I took your signature suggestion. We'll see how it works.

Well, we can do this with six people: two Kiras and four others. It's a majorly abridged version of the game, but it works, and it seems to fit the interest here a lot better. We'd still need four more than we have though.
