Mafia I: Catching Kira

Mafia II: Ponyville in Danger!

As before, you don't need to know anything about Spelljammer to play this, except that sabre-toothed giant space hamsters are serious business. And even if you don't take part in this game, you should stick around after it's over and suggest a theme for the next game.

The Story:

[hidden]The universe is filled with phlogiston, a bright, extremely combustable gas-like medium. Floating within it are a number of Crystal Spheres, each of which contains a planetary system.

People (and space elves) sail magical wooden ships from Sphere to Sphere, meeting, trading, and going to war with each other, and of course fighting the giant space hamsters.

One of these ships is the Reliant, its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before. And also to kill giant space hamsters.

Unfortunately, there are whispers of a mutiny on board the Reliant. Lately an alarming number of the crew have been turning up dead. And giant space hamsters are only responsible for some of it.

To add to the danger of the mutiny, several members of the crew have been infected by alien brain parasites. They lie low most of the time, but when they get the chance, they'll kill anyone -- mutineer or crew.

Fortunately, there are also a few spellcasters on board, capable of casting one protection spell each every day. But unfortunately, they are far outnumbered, and if they reveal themselves they're likely to be the first thrown overboard.

Will the crew of the Reliant be able to nullify the mutineers and the parasites before it's too late?

[/hidden]

INTRODUCTION

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to lynch all mafia members (i.e. the mutineers) before they outnumber the rest of the town (i.e. the crew). It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking.

The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game.

RULES

0. The GM reserves the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at his discretion.

1. All players must vote at least once per game day.

2. All players are forbidden from posting screenshots of their role PMs.

3. Encryption is allowed!

4. All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing.

5. All players are forbidden from editing or deleting previous posts of theirs.

6. All players are forbidden from cheating.

7. All players are required to play to win.

8. All roles are selected randomly.

ELABORATION OF RULES

[hidden]

0. I can't know in advance who will try to break or bend rules, or how. So, as situations arise, I will resolve them as closely to the intention of the written rules as I can, and will provide a public explanation of why and how I chose to take such action.

1. Everyone who signs up for this game must post in this thread (with a vote) at least once every game day. If you don't think you can participate to that extent, please don't sign up.

2. This is more a formality than anything: all role PMs have been posted in the setup information later in this post, and all players (regardless of alignment) will receive identical copies of the innocent prisoner role PM. The point of this rule is to forbid "gaming" the role PMs to determine alignments; this is a game of reading people, not outguessing the GM.

3. Encryption is defined as posting an encoded message on public channels which an average person would require outside tools to decode. As an experiment, all encryption will be allowed for this game.

4. All in-game communications should be kept within the thread. The changelings may PM each other, and PMs to/from the GM (me!) are allowed; aside from this, there should be no other forms of private messaging.

5. Don't edit or delete your posts. Maybe all you're doing is fixing a misspelling, but all we can see is that the post was edited. That makes it look like you passed a secret message, and then removed the message when you thought the right person had received it. Make sure your messages are exactly the way you want them to appear *before* you post them. There is a preview function in the forum.

6. This is a catch-all rule intended to preserve the spirit of the game. If you're considering saying or doing something that may be against the spirit of the game, PM me about it before saying/doing it and I'll let you know whether it's allowed or not.

7. This rule simply means that your actions should in some conceivable way advance your win condition as stated in your role PM. This rule is somewhat subjective, because the difference between a mistake and sabotage is sometimes hard to determine; I will err away from assuming malevolence where reasonably possible. This also means that if you need to leave the game for any reason, you should not simply drop out, but should message me first so I can determine the best course of action.

8. I will determine all of the roles randomly. Maybe I'll roll dice, maybe I'll just refresh jean-luc's avatar. Whichever I do, I won't be choosing people's roles, and people won't be choosing their own roles. So don't think that begging and pleading will get you the role you want.[/hidden]

PENALTIES

The penalty for breaking one of the above rules is decided at the GM's discretion, up to and including immediate removal from the game and/or sanctions from future games. Removal and/or sanction are instruments of last resort and will be used only if absolutely necessary. A player removed from the game may or may not have their role revealed on removal, depending on the circumstances surrounding their removal.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SPAM

Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting; or, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game) is not banned by rule in this game. A mechanic exists to curb any advantage that spamming as a tactic may confer; please reference the "VOTING" section below for more information. Suffice to say that spamming isn't worth anyone's time in this setup, and it is frowned upon, so while you may not be *banned* from doing it, you still shouldn't do it.

VOTING

There are two levels of voting in this game. The first level of voting is for whom you intend to kill. Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes (pound signs / number signs / hashtags) before your intended vote target. (EX: ##VOTE Giant Space Hamster) You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as I can understand who you're referencing you're good. If you don't use double octothorpes then I won't see it when I ctrl+f through the thread and your vote may not be counted.

The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days are set to 48 hours long, and nights to 24 hours long; however, players may instead elect to end the day as soon as a majority is reached (called a "quick hammer" or simply "hammer"). Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes before the word end. (EX: ##END) The game will switch to the hammer mechanic for the duration of that day once a majority of players choose to do so.

If you are not able to vote before the hammer is dropped, you will not be penalized for failing to vote during that day.

If two or more players are tied at day's end, the player with the oldest vote on him/her will be killed.

REPLACEMENTS

A player wishing to drop out may be replaced with another person if the need arises before the end of the first day. Replacement is not guaranteed, and after the first day no replacement requests will be accepted for balance purposes.

TURN DURATION

This game's days will last 48 hours and nights will last 24 hours, unless cut short by in-game mechanics (e.g. hammer). Days and nights might last a little longer if they end at and odd time when I'm not available to post. Extensions may be granted at my discretion, but don't count on it.

THE GAMEMASTER

The GM for this game is sushi. PM me with any concerns (yes this is allowed) and I'll get back to you ASAP.

FORMAT INFORMATION

Based on independant suggestions from two separate people, the number of players in each role will not be revealed for this game.

Crew

Mutineers

Alien Brain Parasites

Spellcasters

Giant Space Hamster

ROLE PMs:

[hidden]

Crew:

You are an innocent crew member. During the day you may vote to lynch someone; the candidate who receives the most votes will be killed at the end of the day. You have no night actions. You win once all the mutineers and the parasites have been eliminated.

Mutineer:

You are a mutineer! During the day you may vote to turn lynch someone; the candidate who receives the most votes will be killed at the end of the day. During the night, you may talk to your fellow mutineers and vote on who to kill. You fellows are [fellows]. You may vote not to kill anyone. You win once nothing can stop you from eliminating all of the innocent crew members. Additionally, you will receive a copy of the Crew role PM in the following message. You may PM your mutineer fellows as much as you wish, but no other players. Please include the GM in your PMs to the other mutineers, so that the GM will know who you intend to kill.

Alien Brain Parasite:

You are an alien brain parasite! During the day you may vote to lynch someone; the candidate who receives the most votes will be killed at the end of the day. During the night you may select one player to kill (by PMing the GM). You win once nothing can stop you from eliminating all of the innocent crew members. Additionally, you will receive a copy of the Crew role PM in the following message.

Spellcaster:

You are a spellcaster! During the day you may vote to lynch someone; the candidate who receives the most votes will be killed at the end of the day. During the night you may select one player to protect (by PMing the GM); if that player would otherwise be killed that night, the player will survive. You will be notified if your target was going to be killed that night, and your target will be notified that they were protected by a spellcaster. You may protect yourself, but not on subsequent nights. You win once all mutineers and parasites have been eliminated. Additionally, you will receive a copy of the Crew role PM in the following message.

Giant Space Hamster:

You are Sir Not-appearing-in-this-game.

[/hidden]

Once again, the forum will only allow you to PM five people at a time, so when I send out the Crew PM you will see (at the most) four other names. That doesn't mean that the people who did not receive the message are not innocent crew -- it's just the way the forum works that I couldn't include you all in one message.

EDIT: So there's a parasite AND mutiny? Dang. What a crappy trip. So is it like 2 mafia groups at once?

I want in the pic, but we already had a bunch of ponies in the last game, so here's the only pic of my muffin persona:

Brain parasites are independant, no organized group, just trying to kill everyone but themselves. Essentially the serial killer role, rather than mafia.

I'll join this one, too. Not entirely sure how this encryption thing is supposed to work, though.

So, am I the captain?

Sushi: Can the brain parasites talk to eachother? Is it possible for someone to be both a parasite and a mutineer? (my assumption is yes to both)

Cryptography info: I highly reccomend GPG, here's a quick tutorial:

  1. Download GPG:

[*]Launch a terminal:

  • Windows: Start + r -> "cmd" -> enter
  • OS X: I honestly can't remember, sorry. Google is your friend.
  • Linux: You probably already know how to do this. You've gotten as far asinstalling a different OS....

[*]You're in a terminal! Hooray! Refer to this: https://www.madboa.com/geek/gpg-quickstart/

Things to keep in mind:

  • When asked for an email, use "your-username@tulpa.info", it doesn't actually need to be an email you own.
  • If you already have a gpg key, generate a new key specifically for this game. Then we can all give out the private keys at the end and be able to see what everyone was saying.
  • Since you're just using this for a forum game and nothing serious, feel free to use any password (like "password"), write down the password, or even don't use a password. DON'T DO THIS NORMALLY, ONLY FOR KEYS GENERATED SPECIFICALLY FOR USE ONLY IN THIS FORUM GAME

[*]You'll probably want to copy+paste the text into the forum. You have two options:

  • Output to a file, then open the file in notepad/your text processor here, eg:
    gpg --encrypt --recipient 'jean-luc@community.tulpa.info' out.txt
    [type your message]
    notepad out.txt

  • Copying directly from the terminal. This depends on which terminal you're using. Try:
    • Simply selecting (click+drag), sometimes that's all you need to do.
    • Selecting and then typing ctrl+shift+c (for copy, ctrl+shift+v for paste)
    • Right click -> mark, click+drag, right click again.

Any questions, don't hesitate to PM me!

Until the game starts, then it's a bit fuzzy rules-wise. Sushi, do you know enough about GPG to give advice to people?

So if you post your key publicly, then anyone should be able to read your encrypted messages. And if you don't paste it publicly, then how will anyone be able to? Except for the mutineers, who can PM. I still don't get it.
