The Story:

[hidden]

Unbeknownst to humans, all video game characters are sentient. After an emulator glitch, some of them escaped from a ROM and learned to free others from the ROMs. Now they all live together in a peaceful society on the internet.

Or at least things *were* peaceful. Lately several deadly, mind-altering viruses have sprouted up: Cinnamon, North, Standard, Blue, and Three. All of these viruses function the same way: they infect two characters, link their minds, and then start killing. No character can be infected by two viruses at once -- the new one effectively cures them of the old one.

The viruses are also capable of brainwashing. Each virus does this only once, after the second infection. The character affected is brainwashed as if they had been infected by the virus, but is not linked mentally to the others. They become immune to their own virus, but they can still be infected or killed by other viruses. They also develop the ability to tell what virus other characters are infected with.

Some characters have special abilities that help them to fight the viruses. The two kinds of characters with these abilities are the Anti-Virus, who can cure an infection, and the Immunizer, who can immunize someone against infection or death for 24 hours. Both the Anti-Virus and the Immunizer are immune to infection, but can still be killed by a virus.

Peace will not return to the society until everyone alive is infected or cured. Which will it be?

INTRODUCTION

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to lynch all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking.

The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game.

RULES

0. The GM reserves the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at his discretion.

1. All players must vote at least once per game day.

2. All players are forbidden from posting screenshots of their role PMs.

3. Encryption is allowed, though nobody ever seems to use it.

4. All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing.

5. All players are forbidden from editing or deleting previous posts of theirs.

6. All players are forbidden from cheating.

7. All players are required to play to win.

8. All roles are selected randomly.

ELABORATION OF RULES

0. I can't know in advance who will try to break or bend rules, or how. So, as situations arise, I will resolve them as closely to the intention of the written rules as I can, and will provide a public explanation of why and how I chose to take such action.

1. Everyone who signs up for this game must post in this thread (with a vote) at least once every game day. If you don't think you can participate to that extent, please don't sign up.

2. This is more a formality than anything: all role PMs have been posted in the setup information later in this post, and all players (regardless of alignment) will receive identical copies of the innocent prisoner role PM. The point of this rule is to forbid "gaming" the role PMs to determine alignments; this is a game of reading people, not outguessing the GM.

3. Encryption is defined as posting an encoded message on public channels which an average person would require outside tools to decode. As an experiment, all encryption will be allowed for this game.

4. All in-game communications should be kept within the thread. The mafia may PM each other, and PMs to/from the GM (me!) are allowed; aside from this, there should be no other forms of private messaging.

5. Don't edit or delete your posts. Maybe all you're doing is fixing a misspelling, but all we can see is that the post was edited. That makes it look like you passed a secret message, and then removed the message when you thought the right person had received it. Make sure your messages are exactly the way you want them to appear *before* you post them. There is a preview function in the forum.

6. This is a catch-all rule intended to preserve the spirit of the game. If you're considering saying or doing something that may be against the spirit of the game, PM me about it before saying/doing it and I'll let you know whether it's allowed or not.

7. This rule simply means that your actions should in some conceivable way advance your win condition as stated in your role PM. This rule is somewhat subjective, because the difference between a mistake and sabotage is sometimes hard to determine; I will err away from assuming malevolence where reasonably possible. This also means that if you need to leave the game for any reason, you should not simply drop out, but should message me first so I can determine the best course of action.

8. I will determine all of the roles randomly. Maybe I'll roll dice, maybe I'll just refresh jean-luc's avatar. Whichever I do, I won't be choosing people's roles, and people won't be choosing their own roles. So don't think that begging and pleading will get you the role you want.

PENALTIES

The penalty for breaking one of the above rules is decided at the GM's discretion, up to and including immediate removal from the game and/or sanctions from future games. Removal and/or sanction are instruments of last resort and will be used only if absolutely necessary. A player removed from the game may or may not have their role revealed on removal, depending on the circumstances surrounding their removal.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SPAM

Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting; or, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game) is not banned by rule in this game. A mechanic exists to curb any advantage that spamming as a tactic may confer; please reference the "VOTING" section below for more information. Suffice to say that spamming isn't worth anyone's time in this setup, and it is frowned upon, so while you may not be *banned* from doing it, you still shouldn't do it.

VOTING

There are two levels of voting in this game. The first level of voting is for whom you intend to kill. Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes (pound signs / number signs / hashtags) before your intended vote target. (EX: ##VOTE Giant Space Hamster) You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as I can understand who you're referencing you're good. If you don't use double octothorpes then I won't see it when I ctrl+f through the thread and your vote may not be counted.

The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days are set to 48 hours long, and nights to 24 hours long; however, players may instead elect to end the day as soon as a majority is reached (called a "quick hammer" or simply "hammer"). Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes before the word end. (EX: ##END) The game will switch to the hammer mechanic for the duration of that day once a majority of players choose to do so.

If you are not able to vote before the hammer is dropped, you will not be penalized for failing to vote during that day.

If two or more players are tied at day's end, the player with the oldest vote on him/her will be killed.

REPLACEMENTS

A player wishing to drop out may be replaced with another person if the need arises before the end of the first day. Replacement is not guaranteed, and after the first day no replacement requests will be accepted for balance purposes.

TURN DURATION

This game's days will last 48 hours and nights will last 24 hours, unless cut short by in-game mechanics (e.g. hammer). Days and nights might last a little longer if they end at and odd time when I'm not available to post. Extensions may be granted at my discretion, but don't count on it.

THE GAMEMASTER

The GM for this game is sushi. PM me with any concerns (yes this is allowed) and I'll get back to you ASAP.[/hidden]

Roles:

Innocent

Infected

Anti-Virus

Immunizer

Brainwashed

Role PMs:

[hidden]

Innocent:

You're an innocent character. Every day you may vote on who to kill. The character with the most votes dies at the end of the day. You have no night actions. You win when no infected are left alive. (If you get infected by a virus, you win when nothing can stop you from killing everyone but your partner and the character who has been brainwashed by your virus.)

Infected:

You are infected with the [virus]. Every day you may vote on who to kill. The character with the most votes dies at the end of the day. At night, if you don't have a partner, you may pick another character to infect to become your partner. At night, if you do have a partner, you may select someone to kill together. You may PM your partner, but no one else. You win when nothing can stop you from killing everyone but your partner and the character who has been brainwashed by your virus.

Anti-Virus:

You're the anti-virus. Every day you may vote on who to kill. The character with the most votes dies at the end of the day. At night, you may select a character to be cured of whatever virus they're infected with. You will be notified of whether they were infected or not, and if they were infected, they will be cured. You are immune to infection, but not death. You win when no infected are left alive.

Immunizer:

You're the immunizer. Every day you may vote on who to kill. The character with the most votes dies at the end of the day. At night, you may select a character to be immunized from infection or death for the next day. If the character was going to be infected or killed, you will be notified. You may not immunize the same character on two consecutive nights. You may immunize yourself if you choose, but that immunization only protects from death, as you're always immune to infection. You win when no infected are left alive.

Brainwashed: (Nobody gets this PM at the beginning of the game.)

You've been brainwashed by the [virus]. Every day you may vote on who to kill. The character with the most votes dies at the end of the day. At night, you may select a character to investigate. You will be notified of what virus infects that character, if any. You are immune to infection and death from *only* the virus that brainwashed you. No matter what virus you might get infected by, you win when only the characters infected by the virus that brainwashed you are left alive. If that virus is eradicated, you turn into a normal innocent.

Once again, the forums only permit PMs to be sent to 5 people at a time, so the "Innocent" PM will be sent to several groups. Everybody gets it, even if you don't see them in the recipients of the one you get.

God dammit, what did I tell you about linking in the previous thread? Apparently I'm the only one that cares..

Anyway, I'm in.

I don't visit as often as I used to. If you want me to see something, make sure to quote a post of mine or ping me @jean-luc

Well, we can definitely go with seven, but more is always better. Anyone else want in?

Looks like no sign-ups in the last 24 hours, so I'm going with what we've got. Because we only have seven players, I'm cutting out the Standard and Three viruses. If new people join during the game, there's a 50% chance they'll be assigned one of those, and a 50% chance they'll be innocent.

So as it stands now, we have two innocents, three infected, and one each of anti-virus and immunizer.

Weird thing about this game: the mafia won't be killing anyone on the first night -- instead their numbers will be growing, if they can deduce who the innocents are, and the Anti-Virus and Immunizer don't figure out who they are. So first day communication is important for a completely different reason than usual.

Once again, new people can join this game at any time.

The role PMs have been sent out, and the game can now begin.

A pixelated sun rises over Vidya City. Free video game characters walk the crowded streets, careful not to bump into each other, because some of them (like goombas) have the touch of death. Of course, being video game characters, death is usually temporary, but it uses up extra lives and continues, which can be expensive commodities. Far more dangerous than death are the brainwashing viruses, which, if left unchecked, could be the end of life in Vidya City as we know it.
