Narration before or after personality?

Should you narrate from the beginning, or after you have their personality solidified? I've heard both perspectives.

Personality first. It helps with sentience.

Narrate the personality. Intertwine them, and let it flow naturally. It's your mind, do whatever feels right.

But yes, the whole "saying whatever" narration is best done after personality.

This is basically what I've been doing so far and I'm glad I'm not doing it "wrong" since someone else agrees. As I work on the personality, I'm pretty much narrating my progress and what I work out to the tulpa-to-be. I'm thinking of it sort of as...she's not formed yet--in basically an embryonic state, and it's like parents talking to their unborn child. Even if there's not an actual developed consciousness at this point before personality is done, as it develops it will be familiar with me and with the idea of narration.

I am doing something sort of similar. I actually had a step before personality, but it only took one session of about 20 minutes.

Basically what I did was calm my mind, and went 'into' my mind. Sort of on par with a wonderland, I suppose, but there was no visualization. I just took awhile forming a 'soul' in my mind, and gave it a name (Haru). I told Haru that we (I used the term 'we') are going to bring her into my world together, and that it will take awhile but I'm sure we can do it. Of course, at this point in time there was no personality (accept those assumed by me prior to any of this).

After that session, I went to personality the next day (I did the first session the night before). Doing the 'greeting' session beforehand gave me a sense of being able to actually talk to her about her personality as if she was already in my mind, waiting for be completed and brought forth. Only a few sessions in I really had the sense that she was alive already, even if I had no emotional response and only worked on a few personality traits.

Also, as a side note, the feeling of actually talking to her during personality is really making the whole stage a lot less tedious than I see other people saying it is.

I've decided to do them simultaneously. Working on personality when I have solid quiet time for at least 30 mins, and narrate mentally whenever I have even a few seconds of free time/remember to during the day

Y'know those times when you're waiting for somebody, or it's taking your computer a few seconds to load a program, or when you're on the shitter? You're not doing anything mentally taxing, so I figure it won't hurt to shoot the breeze narrating to her

I agree about it being less tedious. I just put in hour 8 on personality today, still have lots of traits to go (and once I'm done initially forcing all of the traits I'm going to commit several more sessions to really reinforcing all of them, focusing a lot on the most "essential" traits--which will probably take much longer than the time I'll take initially just conceiving and forcing all of them) and I'm loving it.

Narrating the progress to her does make it feel more collaborative, and right now I'm also working on a write up for her chronicling our progress so that we can refer back to it once she's formed...kind of the closest thing a tulpa might have to baby pictures I guess? Anyway, I'm writing it in the second person, because it's being narrated to her, and I read over some of it today and found a lot of first person statements popping up in among the second person. Now, she's nowhere near sentient yet and this is still the very early stages so I'm not claiming she's directly responsible for the changing tenses, but for me, the fact that I keep doing that without realizing it kind of reinforces the idea that some part of my subconscious is working with me already. That's a very exciting thought.
