Questions on existing original characters

Recommended Posts

So, I don't believe that this specific question has been answered---

I have an OC that I keep very close to me. I created him when I was rather young and dealing with mental issues such as self-mutilation (which I got help for eventually).

He is a coping OC. But, the thing is, his backstory is very grotesque, extremely angsty, and troubled. I want to make him a tulpa. But--... will these things change about him?

Take some time considering why you want to coax your coping OC into becoming a real person. You won't be able to use them to cope anymore once they're a tulpa. Are you prepared for that? Can you separate how you see them now (someone you can dump all your negative emotions onto) from how you'll need to see them from now on (a person with their own thoughts, feelings, and desires)? Something to consider.

As for if he'll keep his backstory: probably not, but it's hard to tell. My guess is that even if he identifies with it at first, he will eventually separate himself from it when he's had more of his own life experiences. But I obviously can't say for sure. I suggest looking around the Progress Reports section and see if there are people who have had the experiences you're looking for.

Has been answered. But the evidence for what exactly will happen is limited. Usually, they will experience some trauma from a dark backstory when they become a soulbond or tulpa, but they will also get better. There is a mix between thoughtforms who choose to identify with their pasts, and those who choose to abandon them for this world, and also a few halfway between.

You should first ask why you want that OC as a tulpa. Is it because you're familiar, you feel like you owe them something, or maybe something else? Is it fair to them to make them a tulpa? You used them to cope with your negatives and if you bring them to life they may literally be tormented with that.

You also have the issue that they may already be sentient on some level from it. You could run into a situation where you start a new tulpa just to find your OC always showing up similar to what happened with Beatles.

Personally I'd probably do some investigating on your OC to see if they are already sentient and if not I'd work on a new tulpa. I wouldn't want to wake up someone that I know will likely be suffering when I do.

However all things can be repaired and given enough time and support if your OC was brought to life they could eventually shed their backstory and/or change for the better.

If he has been around for many years in your life, it is likely that he is already a sentient being. Have you ever felt his thoughts or emotions? I suggest you talk to him face-to-face and ascertain whether or not he already is.

If he is, do not ignore him. He will come back eventually if you do. He is your responsibility now.

If he is not, do not make him a tulpa! I am not as "well maybe you could if you do this" as some people are due to my own experience. If you make him a tulpa, you will still think of him as that character, which will cause him to have identity issues. Nobody wants to come into life thinking they should be one person when really they are not. And, if you make him a tulpa, he will have the same memories of the character. He has been there for years, absorbing all of the memories and traits of the character, so making him sentient will open the door for him to experience everything you put him through if he is not already awake. Your tulpa will know you were the one who put him through all of this and he might resent you.

I had two characters (Paul and HJP) who, for years, I put through psychological, emotional, and physical torment through their story. The only thing that made it bearable for them was the fact that they had each other. I began working on a separate tulpa, Apollo, and soon after the two of them arrived and told me they were sentient. I at first ignored them, but eventually accepted them. The two of them, in an attempt to move away from their past, merged into who I will refer to as MP, or MergePiano (as this Piano is not the same person as my current tulpa Piano, but I'm not going to explain that right now). MP was deeply troubled. He behaved as an abused cat would: lashing out at people, untrusting of everyone. He was emotionally fragile and always seemed to cry. He was in so much pain over his past that he at points contemplated dissipation, or tulpa suicide. He hated me for what I did. Fantasized about killing or hurting me. Made death threats against people. He was no stranger to violence. He wanted people to suffer as he did. I spent a lot of time on IRC where MP would either try to be mean to people (he traumatized a young tulpa) or would have mental breakdowns and as for help. If it weren't for people trying to reach out and help him (namely Saylin's system, and especially Apollo, who still wanted to help him even through MP lashed out at Apollo a few times), he likely would have killed himself.

MP, needless to say, had severe PTSD. I do not think it was the merge that brought about his problems; Paul and HJP had simply ignored their emotions until then.

So please, I am telling you outright: if your character is not sentient, do not wake him up, unless you are ready to add extra problems to your path as a tulpamancer. If you are not willing to deal with someone as extreme was MP was, do not attempt to create this tulpa. The only reason MP eventually mellowed and got over his PTSD was because inside the merge there was a third mind who took over (who is the Piano today, long story), and also because he learned to love and trust people. Apollo was the first person he learned to trust. You tulpa, I'm assuming, would be the only one, so he wouldn't have an Apollo to help him.

MP had a lot of hatred for everyone, especially himself. If you don't want a tulpa to have to go through that, start from scratch.

And I know what people above me said, that he can be helped. Which is true, but unless he is already sentient, why would you want to put you and your tulpa through all that if it can be avoided?

Well, I have this feeling that he is already a sentient being... Only because when I am going through something very hard, like anxiety attacks or other things, I feel like I turn to this character. I feel like he's there for me even if we don't talk or even if I don't see him there at all. I don't know... It just feels weird creating a tulpa instead of making him one, it almost feels like replacing someone that is very close to me?

I'm also unsure of how I could introduce myself to him even if I already know him. I don't really know what's going on I guess, it's confusing for me.

Go into your mindscape as if you were going to force a tulpa. Sit your OC down across from them. Introduce yourself and attempt a conversation. Ask some questions.

By the end of the conversation you should be able to decide if you are forcing them to answer or if they are able to move themselves and think.

And would it be bad if I was forcing him to answer..?

It's always a little hard for me to tell.

If you know of anyone who has had a similar experience to mine, you could always link me to them or maybe one of their progress reports.

Saylin has had to ascertain whether or not her own characters were sentient may times, maybe message her.
