The Danger Zone

Chris and I share some interests that we're passionate about, and I wanted to get him talking a little more online. I figured it'd be good if we just watched shit like normal and we could do little write-ups about it. There will be a lot of action movies, hockey, UFC and maybe some pro wrestling mixed in there too. I understand this won't be too interesting to most but I thought it was worth making a thread for. I'm not sure how often I'll post, so here we go.

Kung Fury (2015)

Directed by: David Sanberg

Description: Kung Fury is a 2015 English-language Swedish martial arts action comedy short film written, directed by, and starring David Sandberg. It pays homage to 1980s martial arts and police action films.

Stevie: I enjoyed this one. It was wacky, but the 80s synthpop soundtrack and the artifact filled and glitchy VHS filter looked wicked cool. The plot was kind of strung together and all over the place, but I don't know what else anyone would expect. It's a short film but still managed to hit so many 80's cliches, from the nerdy hacker doing "hacks" that have no bearing on how computers work, to the stressed out police chief, to the main character mourning the death of his cop partner. It also had a ton of weird shit that mixes well with the cliches anyone who's watched a lot of 80s action has come to know and love. Weird shit like: triceracop, Hitler throwing Kung Fu kicks, and a Nazi Arcade Machine transformer. I'd definitely recommend this one to anyone who has a soft spot for 80s buddy cop flicks or wire-fu movies and a half hour to throw away.

Chris: I didn't take the bait. I have no nostalgia for the type of movie that Kung Fury is referencing and found the purposefully stiff line delivery grating. There wasn't any suspense or sense of danger for the main character. I checked out of this one about half way through. I need movies to be more grounded in reality to get invested. The "humor" struck me as something that won't be funny to anyone in five years.

Movie Review:

Escape from New York (1981)

Directed by: John Carpenter

Description: Escape from New York is a 1981 American dystopian action film co-written, co-scored, and directed by John Carpenter. The film is set in the then near-future 1997 in a crime-ridden United States that has converted Manhattan Island in New York City into a maximum security prison. Ex-soldier Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is given 24 hours to find the President of the United States (Donald Pleasence), who has been captured by prisoners after the crash of Air Force One.

Stevie: John Carpenter is a hell of a director so I figured this one would be good. I had seen parts of it, and the other Carpenter Russell action movie, Big Trouble in Little China; I kind of knew what to expect. The set design was super cool, the totally desolate buildings with trash blowing in the wind and criminals with guns around every corner gave off a sinister vibe. I also really dug how the Army Base sets looked, the buildings were like trapazoids and looked appropriately military and futuristic. Kurt Russell isn't really a great actor but he plays the Snake character well. If anyone's a Metal Gear Solid fan they should check this one out. The soundtrack was the standard Synthwave/Pop that's in a lot of action movies of this era. Carpenter always has really good sound design in his movies so this isn't really a surprise for me. The special effects in general are pretty good, most of the gore and stuff is practical, but even the CGI glider Snake lands on the World Trade Center (it's so weird seeing it in the skyline) looks really good considering the time and lower budget of the movie. All in all a good action flick, although most of the characters aren't developed much and the plot is a standard race against time, which I think is a cheap way of creating suspense, it's got great style all around and some  really over the top but not cartoonish characters.

Chris: Stevie's attention span leaves something to be desired. It took three or four days to watch this. I liked this one. It was fast paced and didn't over-do it on the exposition. Most of it took place at night that gave it an even more closed in and claustrophobic atmosphere. The main character had some gimmicky, tongue-in-cheek one-liners. The fight scenes and action was good when it happened, I could've done with less running around. There's a backstory with the main character and an auxiliary character that's unnecessary and is never referenced or comes into play after it's introduced. I wonder if more dialog about this got edited out. The movie's feels longer than ninety minutes though I wouldn't say it dragged. If you like movies like Casino Royale or Crank where there's a lot of running around, you won't mind that part of it. It detracted from the movie in my opinion. That's my only real gripe.

The Running Man (1987)

Directed by: Paul Michael Glaser

Description: In 2017, after a worldwide economic collapse, American society has become a totalitarian police state, censoring all cultural activity. The U.S. government pacifies the populace by broadcasting game shows where convicted criminals fight for their lives, including the gladiator-style The Running Man, hosted by the ruthless Damon Killian where "runners" attempt to evade "stalkers", armed mercenaries, around a large arena, and near-certain death for a chance to be pardoned by the state.

Stevie: This is a flick that I've seen several times throughout my life, the first time being when I was like six or seven years old. I've always been a big Arnie fan, and figured that watching and reviewing another movie with Chris before doing a Schwarzenegger vehicle was out of the question. This movie doesn't shine because of any one thing, in my opinion, but it's more or less the perfect storm for an 80s action blockbuster. Arnold, great special effects, excellent and very tight pacing, and a tight script really bring it together. The Jesse Ventura cameo never fails to get a laugh out of me. This is an old favorite of mine so I'm gonna stop gushing and hand over the reigns to the guy who just saw it.

Chris: I was expecting more running. The exposition time at the beginning took a while. Once they get into the arena and begin to play the game the movie picks up. The concept of Stalkers felt very reminiscent of wrestling. This wasn't lost on the director; Jesse Ventura was included and worked a scene that closely resembled a wrestling match near the climax. Wrestling is also mentioned in the dialog a few times. I couldn't decide if I found the female lead annoying or not. Her lines were sometimes unclear. The same goes for Schwarzenegger. This was an easy movie to get into and stay invested in. The villain is very one dimensional and the resistance movement isn't developed. I liked that Ventura's character's name was Captain Freedom. The tongue in cheek tone worked well. Without the subtle humor the Orwellian plot would've seemed played out. It's a cut above a lot of 80's action schlock Stevie has me watch.

Hockey: [12/14/16]

Stevie: The Boston Bruins (our team) are set to face the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight. I'm definitely not envisioning a win because the Pens just one the Stanley Cup (like the Superbowl of Hockey) last year and their record this season far outshines anything the Bruins have been able to muster up. The thing about the Bruins is that after winning the Cup in '11, the management gave all these huge contracts to a team that really wasn't tested yet.

Chris: In hockey, winning a cup for one year doesn't mean much. There's factors at play beyond the team's lineup in any given year. Giving an unproven team large contracts when there is a salary cap causes there to not be enough money left over in the franchise to purchase new players. Boston's defense is weak. It was disappointing in this year's draft to see that no new defensive acquisitions were made.

Stevie: The conditions this year have been less than stellar but I believe that the Bruins should be making the playoffs, which we missed by very little last year. I doubt we'll be even division champions, because of how competitive the Atlantic division is, but the playoffs is a sure thing in my eyes. We're coming off a (fluke) win against the Montreal Canadiens aka The Habs who are a real powerhouse this year, and there's been some solid victories throughout the season to teams that are doing better (looking at you, Columbus Blue Jackets) so it's not like we're full Maple Leaf territory of sucking on ice.

Chris: I'll have to see better play sustained for longer before I make any optimistic predictions. Tuukka Rask, our goaltender, isn't consistent in the way that a team lacking offense needs him to be.

Hockey: [12/16/16]

Stevie: The Bruins lost against the Penguins as we both predicted, but the real shitty part is that they lost against the Anaheim Ducks too, the following night, which I didn't see coming. Both scores were 4-3, with the Bruins losing.

Chris: The next game is against the LA Kings. They've under-performed this season. That doesn't mean a guaranteed win. The Bruins are on the road; traveling can tire out a team. The Islander's game is anyone's guess. The following two games are against the Florida Panthers and the Carolina Hurricanes. I expect the Bruins to beat the Panthers. They'll lose to the Canes.

Stevie: The Islanders fucking suck so I think the B's are gonna take that one. I agree with Chris on the Panthers, even though I don't wanna see em pounded into the dust or anything. The Panther's AHL (minor league) associate team is the Springfield Thunderbirds which is right in my neck of the woods, gotta go see a game before the season ends. The Hurricanes aren't a very consistent team, even though they've got a bunch of young talent, I think they're in what's known as a development phase, so I expect the Bruins to take this one.

Mixed Martial Arts:

UFC 206

Stevie: The next time we review a UFC card, it won't be retroactively, so I'll be able to post a list of our individual picks before the fights and how that panned out. I've been busy lately so couldn't put the research into this one that both Chris and I prefer to have done. Keeping up with sports involves a lot of research if you want to know what the fuck you're talking about. Also, we watched half of this one live, but my (illegal, free) stream died about 2 fights in, so I had to torrent the rest of it.

Chris: I only think one fight on this card is worth discussing. Cub Swason vs. Choi Doo-Ho was a hell of a match up. The featherweight division is far more interesting than anything the heavyweight scene manages to produce. This is because the fighters in the heavyweight division are aging without any talent prospects to replace them. The featherweight division has fighters who can have longer careers due to less joint strain.

Stevie: Choi Doo-Ho is a South Korean MMA fighter who, before UFC 206, was undefeated. In this fight he ate so many punches from Swason, who people thought was kinda getting up there and incapable of beating such a young talent (i.e. people thought he was what's known as a tomato can, a fighter that is considered an easy win) and he proved them all wrong. This is the closest I've ever seen an MMA fight get to really seeming like a pro wrestling match, in terms of psychology, and just there being too well developed "characters" with motivations. I'd recommend this one to anyone who's never seen an MMA fight before and thinks it might be interesting.

Chris: Not very much I can add to that. I'm not as big of a fight fan as Stevie. Neither of us have the well developed technical knowledge to dissect the fight further.

Picks for UFC Fight Night 12/17/16

Our picks are bolded. Who we pick to win fights can sometimes depend on stats, sometimes on fondness, and sometimes arbitrary. For this one we're only gonna write picks for the main card because Fight Nights have a lot of unknowns in the undercard.

Stevie:

Paige VanZant v Michelle Waterson

Sage Northcutt v Mickey Gall

Urijah Faber v Brad Pickett

Alan Jouban v Mike Perry

Chris:

Paige VanZant v Michelle Waterson

Sage Northcutt v Mickey Gall

Urijah Faber v Brad Pickett

Alan Jouban v Mike Perry

We're all gonna make it brah.

UFC Fight Night 12/17/16 results:

Michelle Waterson v Paige VanZant  (Both Stevie & Chris are wrong)

Sage Northcutt v Mickey Gall (Chris is right)

Urijah Faber v Brad Pickett (Stevie's right)

Alan Jouban v Mike Perry (Both Stevie and Chris are wrong)

Stevie: There's a ton of shit I could say about this entire card but I think focusing in-depth on a couple fights is probably better than trying to sum up the whole thing. The Alan Jouban/ Mike Perry fight didn't go as either of us thought it would.

Chris: Going into the fight, Mike Perry was undefeated 9-0. Six of his wins were by knockout. The guy's 25 and a rising star if he can get his ego in check. Alan Jouban is ten years older with a record of 14-4 before the fight.

Stevie: Even Vegas agreed with us, Perry was the favorite and I think on paper he seems like the winner of this one too. I was expecting a first or second round knock out.

Chris: We talked about how before the fight, Perry looked better sparring. There's a point where experience in MMA stops working in your favor. It stands to reason that Jouban would be slower. Nothing about his pre-fight sparring gave me a different impression.

Stevie: This fight also had my favorite referee, Herb Dean. Chris doesn't have opinions on refs because he's a bitter, bitter man. In the open of the fight things immediately went south when Jouban opened with repeated kicks to Perry. This didn't exactly spell disaster or anything, since what Perry relies on is his right hand, but Jouban kept taking him down which totally interrupts the momentum of trying to play a stand-up game.

Chris: Perry got more gassed every time he got taken down. That was a winning factor in Jouban's game. Perry started looking alive during the end of the round. It wasn't enough to get him the round in the judge's eyes. He was on the defensive the whole time despite the combination near the end. Keep in mind that he was cocky during interviews and wrote off Jouban as too old. Between the dynamic of this fight and the Swanson/Choi Do-Hoo fight it's a running theme.

Stevie: Smacktalk always looks worse in hindsight for the loser, but I don't know, it seems to me like Perry got lazy. Like he just seemed to be phoning it in the whole time like he walked in there thinking he was gonna win. That's a fine mentality, but you still have to back it up with that competitive effort.

Chris: Perry did eat a lot of strikes. Jouban wouldn't let up on the takedowns and had more control of the octagon the entire time. The fight went all three rounds. Before the decision I predicted it'd be a split decision. It ended up being unanimous.

Stevie: This was disappointing because based on Perry's other fights he's obviously got some talent but it just didn't happen here. Maybe losing this one will give him some motivation to get better in the future, because the Welterweight division is so competitive right now and Mike Perry hasn't even broken into the upper crust yet.

Stevie: At least one of us was right during the Urijah Faber/ Brad Pickett fight.

Chris: I chose Pickett because I know he's got hands and can take a punch. He's a submission artist too. I saw a fight with him some time ago, I didn't anticipate him winning. He dominated the entire fight. I can't remember who he was fighting. He was the underdog in this Faber fight as well. I figured he was always one.

Stevie: Something to point out about this one though is that it's Faber's last fight in the octagon. Both guys are like late thirties so as far as age goes they're evenly matched. Faber's hometown is in Sacramento which is where the Fight Night was out of this time, so with all that type of shit happening it made sense to me that they'd design a fight where he'd win. I'm not calling Pickett a tomato can or anything but from a marketing standpoint it makes sense. Some more about Faber, he's got cornrolls and his song for on his way to the octagon is California Love. The guy's kind of gimmicky. He's got a mean

that he's wicked good at. (Guy in the video isn't Faber, just wanted to throw in a visual aide)

Chris: Pickett's pre-fight record was worse. 26-12 to Faber's 33-10. He got eight of those wins by KO and 10 by submission. I figured this one could go either way. Pickett's more dangerous on his feet in general.

Stevie: Big John McCarthy was officiating this one, it's a Bantam weight bout so it was funny to see how both fighters who are 5'6" looked wicked small next to him. McCarthy used to have a podcast that was pretty good, he stopped doing it though.

Chris: By the end of the first round Faber had a ground and pound under his belt. He was going for the guillotine choke on Pickett. I was surprised that Pickett was still in it at that point.

Stevie: This fight was already at least ten times more entertaining than Perry/Jouban and I think part of the reason for that is Faber wanting to really have a nice final fight in his hometown. Pickett wasn't going down easy or anything but he just couldn't get the striking momentum to do this little calf kick he does.

Chris: I guessed this would end in unanimous decision after they went the distance. We slept on this match-up when we were researching the card.

Stevie: I noticed a kid in the crowd when they panned over during the judge's decision, who the hell brings a kid to an MMA event? Also, cya Urijah Faber, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Chris: I'm 0/2 for fights we recapped here. This one did end in unanimous decision. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out right before the judge's decision.

Stevie: We're both 1/4 for the main card of this one as far as predicting goes. I think as we continue doing this we can start thinking about what the finish is and which round it happens in. Looking back I have no idea why we both picked Michelle Waterson to win the main event.

Chris: We didn't know a lot about her and picked the underdog.

Stevie: Yeah, UFC 207 is soon, maybe we'll do a little better on that one.

UFC 207 predictions:

Stevie:

Amanda Nunes v Ronda Rousey

Dominick Cruz v Cody Garbrandt

Fabricio Werdum v Cain Velasquez

Tj Dillashaw v John Lineker

Chris:

Amanda Nunes v Ronda Rousey

Dominick Cruz v Cody Garbrandt

Fabricio Werdum v Cain Velasquez

The "Two More Games of Our Hockey Team Being Mediocre" Section

Bruins win 1-0 against the LA Kings

Bruins lose 2-4 against the New York Islanders

Chris: The win against the Kings doesn't mean much. I didn't want to say it was a forgone conclusion before. The Kings aren't a great team. They never have been. The Bruins didn't do as well against them as they should've. The Kings have more functional defense which kept scoring opprotunities low. I knew the Islanders would put up a fight.

Stevie: In the beginning of the Islanders game, where it all started going downhill, was when Brad Marchand crashed into our goalie, Tuukka Rask, which allowed an Islander to get the puck from behind the basket and slap it in. That was the first point and it happened pretty fast and I just had a shitty feeling that it wasn't gonna be good. The Bruins are third in the division behind the Habs and the Sens, so it's not like all is lost, but to be fair the Atlantic division isn't looking great this year.

Chris: I would've expected the Red Wings to be doing better.

Stevie: Probably has something to do with the fact that their arena is named after a pizza place now. After the Canes and Panthers games which we gave our thoughts on above, the Bruins are playing the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are doing really well this season out of nowhere.

Chris: That won't go well for us. The Bruins beat them early in the season once or twice. That was before they gained momentum.

Stevie: At this point I just wanna make it to the playoffs.

Movie Review:

Cobra (1986)

Directed by: George P. Cosmatos

Description: A tough-on-crime street cop must protect the only surviving witness to a strange murderous cult with far reaching plans.

Stevie: I wrote down both of our thoughts on this movie as we watched it. It took like 5 days and 3 sessions of watching to get through which pissed Chris off. We both had never seen this one before and it's been on my radar for so long that I figured it was a good one to watch.

Chris: The other police refer to Stallone's character as 'The Cobra.' His license plate reads AWESOM 50. This movie is going to be ninety minutes of Stallone doing his impression of cool. It's a vanity project.

Stevie: I'd agree with you but he does so much weird shit. He sticks an unread newspaper from the end of his driveway into a grille before getting into his house, he cuts the tip off of a slice of pizza, eats the tip, and then flings the rest into a box, he hangs out at home with gloves on, he eats apples with gloves on and just generally says bizarre things when he's not saying badass things. I think Stallone might've had a vision or idea of this character but it didn't translate to screen well and was just kind of confusing.

Chris: The stunt work and fight choreography was good. Even if the hand to hand was lacking. I liked the generous shots of 80's cars. The chase scenes were suspenseful. If this were done today it'd have twice the explosions without creating any investment.

Stevie: It's cool when Stallone drives his old 1950 Mercury Monterey off the second floor of a parking garage at about 60 mph, I wonder how they did it without CGI.

Chris: Maybe models. All the cult does when they're shown together is bang axes together. They should've been developed more. I noticed that Stallone does more stunts than Schwarzenegger.

Stevie: I think the difference is that Stallone always wanted to make the best movie he could whereas I think Arnie always wanted longevity in the business.

Chris: It's harder to get a stunt double for Arnold. I disagree with the idea that Stallone did this for artistry. This is like Sly does a conventional action movie. It was motivated by their popularity at the time. Rocky and First Blood were less conventional. I understand he wrote the screenplay based on a novel; that's a formula he already thought was winning based on Rocky and First Blood. Nothing about this movie is fresh. The factory scene is like Terminator. The cult leader is like the villain from Red Dragon.

Stevie: Stallone's performance here reminds me of how he acted in Judge Dredd, which would come out something like 10 years after Cobra. It makes sense because they're both cops but it was just funny to me. I think that maybe Sly thought he was making a good movie but whatever he had in his head just didn't translate well. This movie felt super rushed, it could've easily been around a half hour longer to give time to developed the lead and also the cult in general. The only character who has a super clear motivation is the chick who just doesn't wanna die.

Chris: The action scenes saved this one. The dialog was horrible. Stallone had a lot of good will toward him during this time, I imagine this was well-recieved. Without the cushion of the pre-90s Stallone popularity this one is forgettable. You won't remember what anyone wants because the movie doesn't either.

UFC 207 Results:

Amanda Nunes v Ronda Rousey (Stevie +1/Chris -1)

Dominick Cruz v Cody Garbrandt (Stevie -1/Chris -1)

Fabrico Werdum v Cain Velasquez (Cancelled due to Cain Velasquez saying that he needed surgery in a pre-fight interview)

TJ Dillashaw v John Lineker (Stevie +1/Chris -1)

Stevie: This was pretty much a night (we had to watch this Saturday morning, but that doesn't sound as cool) of surprises for both of us. I was kind of picking Amanda Nunes as a wild card pick, and Chris figured Rousey had it and didn't wanna join me on the Nunes hype train, but when Rousey got KO'd like 45 seconds or so into the first round of the five round championship fight were we both like, slackjawed.

Chris: Rousey seemed like she had it. Once Nunes started unloading it was clear that Ronda is a grappler because she can't eat punches well. No one thought that Rousey would go down like that. There's rumors she might retire. She took her loss against Holly Holms badly last year. I don't know if she has it in her to regroup and fight again.

Stevie: I was always of the opinion that Rousey would retire before her face got too messed up. Female fighters like Holly Holms or Chris Cyborg look kinda punched-out in the face but they don't have to worry because I don't think either of them are in it to become a marketing machine. Rousey makes a lot of buzz because during that streak she had where she went undefeated for like 10+ fights everyone was oohing and ahhing.

Chris: Her punches in that sparring video they released looked bad. You have to be more well-rounded to fight in MMA. During the fight Nunes was unloading punches and Rousey looked like she was in trouble ten seconds in. Amanda Nunes throws bombs.

Stevie: We should talk about the Bantamweight (135 lb) division in general, there were two fights with guys from this division on this card, TJ Dillashaw/John Lineker and the bout for the Bantamweight championship between defending champion Dominick Cruz and Cody Garbrandt. That's one where we were both just so fucking wrong, the entire fight was kind of like what the fuck to watch.

Chris: Take into account the comments about Dillashaw having been fighting No. 1 and Cruz being afraid of him. Cody Garbrandt was number 5 in the division and Dillashaw had not gotten a title shot despite being number 2 in the division. Cruz wanted to dodge dropping the title by fighting Garbrandt instead of Dillashaw. Look at where that got him.

Stevie: Garbrandt doing push-ups and that little shimmy dance thing during his fight kind of pissed me off, but I'm also one of those stiff upper lip dudes who doesn't like the idea of showboating in the NFL. It was kind of like holy shit, because Cruz is a dangerous guy, he can switch stances at any time, he's got this bobbing and weaving thing going on where he flows like water and fakes out his opponents and is generally very hard to hit. And Garbrandt being kind of a no-name guy undermined that.

Chris: Dillashaw and Garbrandt has to happen. I'd like it to be Garbrandt's first title defense.

Stevie: Meanwhile, poor John Lineker, he got outgrappled and out-striked.

Chris: It's not a new situation. Lineker depends on throwing hard punches and having a granite chin. They both went the distance. Dillashaw is just a better all-around grappler.

Stevie: I wanna say for the folks reading this maybe that John Lineker looks like a tatted buffed up Daniel Radcliffe. It's not like he got mowed over in this fight but it just wasn't the type of showing that even I thought was gonna happen. He didn't really give Dillashaw a run for his money and I think his ability to just eat punches for breakfast is the only reason this fight didn't end in TKO.

Chris: Next card I'll just side with Vegas every time.

Stevie: I think that's about it. This was a hell of a card. I don't think we'll catch Fight Night this Saturday cause we'll be at a hockey game but definitely gonna start doing research for UFC 208 ASAP so maybe this time we'll be more well-informed and be better at predicting fights.

Hockey [1/1/17]:

Stevie: The Bruins are coming off of 2 wins in a row against the Buffalo Sabres, and generally being booked 50/50 everywhere else. David Backes who's been really great offensively and is a new guy as of this year got hurt during the first Sabres game and as of yesterday is out indefinitely.

Chris: It's a level of mediocrity that keeps things uninteresting. The team has star players and is wasting them. I liked seeing that Minnesota Wild/ Columbus Blue Jackets game yesterday. Tell the people why it was cool.

Stevie: Yeah, we were rooting for the Wild because we both lived in Minnesota for a while last year, but it was cool because the Columbus Blue Jackets have 14 (now 15) straight wins and the Wild had 12 before they lost. That's the first time two teams with 12+ wins each did the hockey in the NHL.

Chris: At least we're not Toronto fans. The Maple Leafs can't get out of the bottom of the division with Matthews there or not.

Stevie: For some background Auston Matthews is a new player for the Leafs as of this season and legit scored 4 points in his first game, which is insane. I think that was a record he broke. Even with this dynamo who's sinking pucks like nobody's business in they're still 6th in an 8 team division.

Chris: I'd blame poor management or coaching.

Stevie: The refuge of the hockey fan with a shitty team: talking about how shitty the shittier teams are. The Bruins aren't even doing /that/ bad, they're third, but not being able to beat the upper half teams in a division doesn't bode well for the playoffs.

And fuck the habs.

We're all gonna make it brah.
