"In the globalizing, internet-mediated world of 2016, Tulpamancers have to incur the perverse consequences of a culture in which difference is valorized in principle, but is mostly policed and punished in practice.

Our culture, paradoxically, nominally values individuality, but aggressively imposes a highly standardized framework on behaviour, which can be measured, catalogued, pathologized  and punished with terrible precision."

Yea. The stigma against plurality is an odd one. Unlike most stigmas, which are being actively stamped out by the scientific community, this stigma on mental health is being actively promoted by the scientific community.

Science is an unbiased tool. But you can't escape the human factor. And the weight of the history of the community informs its modern practise.

I'm not too sure about the theory of mind part. This automatically raises a red flag in my mind. See, hindrances in theory of mind being linked to autism is in itself controversial. There are alternate, and better explanations for asocial autistic behaviour.

If there is not theory of mind hindrance in autism for most patients, then any properly constructed test for theory of mind will not find any hindrances in theory of mind in autistic tulpamancers.

I completely agree with this. However, autistic individuals are still very well-documented to score poorly on theory of mind tests. This study confirms this association in high-functioning adults on the spectrum (the same general demographic represented in Veissiere's study): http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1469-7610.1997.tb01599.x/full

Additionally, the tulpamancers themselves report that their tulpas have helped them in this area. I know that Aury has had this impact on me too :)

While I will not minimise the benevolence tulpas are prone to grace their hosts with, I shall remind you all that stigmas about our community and those involving mental illness exist for good reasons.

Some of us are not of good enough stock or committed so much as to provide as best as lives as possible for the tulpas we created or encountered (myself included). Albeit small, I think any sum of harmed, neglected or even dissipated tulpas are too many. Not to mention concepts such as merging, splitting or otherwise wishing to modify oneself or one's thought-forms, amongst others. Note also those who criticise hosts for appropriating Tibetan Buddhist practise and mysticism, as well investing in the stereotype that a great majority herein are naught but obese dakimakura-grasping shutins.

I have been told that human beings harbour morbid fascination and careful distancing between healthier specimens and their more unfortunate counter-parts, specifically those deformed, maimed, diseased or abrasively different from what is used to. While the sciences have been able to provide some illumination on what ails others and mitigate certain difficulties, the social services and medical industries in many countries have to come quite a way before effective treatment can be distributed to all patients, especially a post-Reagonomics U.S. lobbied by pharmaceutical firms staunchly entrenched in further de-institutionalisation policies. While the mentally ill are anymore rarely ever manacled to concrete anchors or trapped inside wooden slatted cages, such folks are still very much chained down and boxed in by a public conscience that is both pragmatically and even eugenically bent on removing them from the gene-pool, political correctness and identity-politick be damned.

While I do not agree with the views others may foist upon myself or the collective of users here, I can understand why they may think in such ways. No matter how myself or others are appraised, I feel the most important decision one can make in this regard is to continue leading a good life and taking care of those under yourself as best as your current abilities shall maintain.

I've seen good people bleed

And I thought I'd seen it all

But my own two eyes would prove me wrong that day.

There are things that I've done

Only seen by the sun

And those things will be buried in my grave.

Thank you for providing me with context for that. It cleared that up for me.

Not really. If they existed for good reason, then it would not be called a stigma. It exists for bad reason. Those who call it a stigma simultaneously recognize that it exists and that it has no good reason.
