As has been already mentioned on chat, the rizon IRC is being abandoned, largely in favour of discord.

For those who don't know, discord is some sort of "cloud" app, similar to IRC, but with gaudy avatars, a much lower barrier to entry, and easy access to chat logs. You can also see when another person is typing.

Drawback: A strong chat will draw conversations off the main site and onto chat.

Benefit: People who would never come here will be drawn here through discord.

Also, we will continue to remain with the community this way.

If we were to ever create an official Discord server, we would need to abandon IRC entirely. Otherwise, it would lead to even more community fragmentation. This community has seen quite enough of that as it is, and I don't see us dissolving the IRC channels any time soon.

Discord is also less accessible than IRC, in that it appears to require the user to download the app (and maybe then create an account—not sure), if clicking the join link on a mobile browser. This would alienate the mobile userbase to some extent, and reduce the number of random users who join our chat, who primarily browse with mobile devices. As things are now, any mobile user who is browsing the site can click on the links on our Chat page, and join our IRC channels, with no issues, and without the need to download an app or make an account of any kind.

IRC also allows a user to choose from a plethora of clients for their own use, if they so desire. They are not stuck with a single client program whether they like it or not, like with Discord.

There are some handy things about Discord, but overall not worth the effects that it would have.

Furthermore, neither Chupi nor I have any desire to moderate a Discord server. Anyone is free to create their own tulpa Discord server (there are already a million), but it would not be an "Official Tulpa.info Discord Server".

As far as I see it, this isn't going to happen.

"If this can be avoided, it should. If it can't, then it would be better if it could be. If it happened and you're thinking back to it, try and think back further. Try not to avoid it with your mind. If any of this is possible, it may be helpful. If not, it won't be."

We could make our private Discord more public, maybe. :P

There are plenty of existing servers (large ones, too) to join if you're interested in discussing tulpas. The .info IRC channels have been lacking in activity as is, and splitting things up even more is only going to make this worse. The random joins that you get just from people looking at populated channels and seeing ours isn't going to happen on Discord, and it's not too difficult for most to access things like chat logs.

I'm all for it. I was vaguely aware we even had an IRC channel, but Discord sounds like a solid option.

And on the contrary, I think it might actually bring in more activity, at least in the beginning. Just as long as the IRC is abandoned completely, then I'm sure people will check it out because it's new.

It required registration, yes. But it does not require any download. As far as I know, discord is much more mobile friendly than IRC has ever been.

Just wanna add that last time I checked, it's not available on the Window mobile OS at least, which would alienate at least a couple people, maybe/maybe not. The browser version also didn't work, but may now. It's been a while since I switched. There was some unofficial app or another which either did/didn't work depending on who you were.

Otherwise, yeah, I think IRC is probably fine as is. People have been using it for ages, and are pretty set and comfortable with how it works.

It is worth noting the difficulties in abandoning IRC. Many of those who were active during the move away from Rizon will recall that there were several (more than twenty, if I remember) users who remained in the Rizon channels when the official channels "moved" to .IM, and only some of those were also users on the new network. Because of how channels work on IRC, there's not a clean way of completely and utterly retiring the IRC channels. Simply telling everyone to go somewhere else will not work, as we have already seen.

People just want to talk to each other; likeminded people will gather on the platforms they like. We shouldn't try to tell people what they like.
