Suspending disbelief

Recommended Posts

I know that the best way to get results when creating a tulpa for the first time is by suspending all disbelief and setting aside skepticism. So far, I have mostly been able to do that, especially while actively forcing.

I might need a little help with that, though. Is there anything you guys did to stop your disbelief? Anything you could tell me to give me some confidence in all of this? (Don't type something and then say it was your tulpa that wrote it; I'm definitely not going to believe that.)

Another thing that's probably stronger for me than disbelief is personal doubt. Even if tulpae are real and people can see, feel, and hear them and their tulpae can possess them or switch with them, I don't think that I would be capable of creating one. No matter how hard I try or for how long, I fear that I would not be successful. Did any of the rest of you feel the same?

Post by my host I always link with this stuff: https://community.tulpa.info/thread-how-hard-is-it-to-get-started-for-a-sceptic?pid=159973#pid159973

Parts of a quote he wrote for someone else (they were having trouble telling their tulpa's developing voice from random thoughts)

I didn't actually do any "narration" with my tulpas, having had them well before finding out about tulpas, I just talked to them. Always expected and attempted to get a reaction. Sometimes they responded, sometimes they didn't, sometimes I couldn't tell if it was me or them. But I knew they were there, so I just kept talking to them as if they were and trying to hear or feel responses. A lot of the time I got vague feelings that were informative enough, ie I could tell if they would agree or disagree with something even without hearing them speak, sometimes without even feeling them either. Sometimes you just have to use your best judgement on how your tulpa would react and act like they did so. The goal is to train your brain to get used to sending you thoughts and feelings from what you know as your tulpa. So any way that you can create those neural pathways, even if it's imagining what responses would be like while actually hearing nothing, will eventually get you somewhere.

Basically, don't attempt to hear your tulpa casually commenting on things, even with moderate focus. It doesn't probably appear as such when you read about peoples' experiences here, but that's rather far along in vocality development. Initially you have to work a lot very intently listening for responses in a distraction-free environment, including mental ones. The act of "listening" mentally is effectively the act of "expecting", which means you're subconsciously thinking of what your tulpa would/could say. That's how vocality starts as far as I can tell, expectations. Worrying about "if it was them" or not isn't really a factor, it shouldn't change what you're doing - talking to them as if they can hear you, and listening for their responses as if they can talk. Eventually your tulpa should develop a mindvoice unique to them, meaning you'll be able to differentiate what they say from random thoughts or your own based on how they feel/sound.

. . . all I can tell you is the universal rule of developing vocality: Does it seem like something your tulpa would have said? Is it something that they would be upset you believed was them if it wasn't? If there's no downside to believing it was them, you might as well. If there is, it may be safer to disregard it, or at least not assume that it was them.

Dunno. Put some time into very focused vocality training, and don't worry about/expect responses outside of those sessions for a while. You'll get too stressed trying to decide whether every random thought that enters your head was your tulpa or not, and at this stage it probably won't have been. Take it slowly and you shouldn't have too much trouble telling what's meant to be them or not, and when you do, ask yourself if would be bad to assume it was.

Basically, it's all in your mind, so there is no real or not real. There is only what you experience. So being afraid or doubting is counterproductive in the simplest sense; it's doing what you don't want to do. Practice speaking and listening to your tulpa, expect them to respond as you believe they would. Work on developing their mindvoice by attributing the types of things they would say to the thoughts of what they might say in your head, and try to associate their voice too if you can, not necessary. Over time those thoughts start to feel (and sound) less like yours and more like theirs, and eventually with enough practice it's difficult to even mistake them. There's five of us in this system and there's not a moment of doubt for who said what anymore. We had that a few years in, though it's been about seven now.

I reccomend hanging out in chats like the tulpa.info IRC. Just talk and ask questions and be open minded. Don't feel bad asking questions.

For me personally comparing my experiences and hearing the experiences of others who started at square one with me gave me a lot of enthusiasm to continue.

How this tends to work is you have doubts until they talk to you, then you no longer doubt if tulpa exist but start questioning other things.

If you end up on the IRC you can get in touch with me through Ivy or Raven and I'll answer any questions you have.

I didn't have to. After reading The Tale of The Dueling Neurosurgeons by Sam Kean, I learned that tulpas are far from the weirdest thing that can happen in the human brain.

Besides, I grew up reading and rereading Calvin & Hobbes, so the idea wasn't new to me.

I was still skeptical though, but I figured that if I succeeded then it was proven to me and if I didn't then it wasn't.

Well, first off, why wouldn't you be able to create a tulpa? There are people who fart less than they make tulpas and you're actively trying so I don't think there is a reason to doubt yourself.

Otherwise, the thing that really convinced me is that I doubt everyone here was just collectively keeping this site going to prank a bunch of people.

I don't know. I'm prone to doubt myself. I know my reality, and I don't seem to think that I'm capable of changing it in that significant of a way.

Well, that does seem like a good point on the surface, but there are also websites run by thousands of people who claim to be witches and cast spells. This isn't the only suspicious site run by people who claim to be able to do something extraordinary on the Internet. The Internet can be a weird place.

For most people, suspending disbelief just seems to be something that happens over time, naturally, and because of that I couldn't provide any exercises; if you want to see change, just interact with your tulpa and see where the creation process takes you. For confidence, maybe you could read through some of the progress reports. A lot of people have joined the community with a skeptical mindset and you can see how things begin to change through their updates.

My host never thought she'd be able to get a tulpa. Or that one would be real enough to be worth it. So that is why she ignored the phenomenon until she got an accidental tulpa about six months later.

"Accidental tulpa." I can't help but think of Professor Utonium accidentally adding an extra ingredient to the concoction, thus the Powerpuff Girls were born!

Well, you do have a point there.

I would have dismissed it as well, especially considering the guy who told me about it.

The reason why I gave it a chance was how this site is much more scientific than others, and actively searches for empirical evidence for the existence of tulpas instead of trying to insist that it must be based on faith and such.
