Mafia II: Ponyville in Danger!

Recommended Posts

So after the success of Mafia I, we're ready to move on to Mafia II.

As before, you don't need to know anything about My Little Pony to play this. It will not be the same as the story of MLP, and it will not spoil MLP, but it will be similar -- you can think of it as something that could have happened in the MLP universe. And even if you don't take part in this game, you should stick around after it's over and suggest a theme for the

next game.

The Story:

[hidden]Life is good in the town of Ponyville. While major disasters occur alarmlingly frequently, they're always resolved quickly by the magic of friendship (and also actual magic).

Recently (thanks to the magic of friendship) certain ponies have noticed that their friends don't quite seem like themselves. This was brought to the attention of Princess Celestia (as matters of friendship often are) and she visited Ponyville personally to confirm their worst fears: Ponyville is being invaded by changelings.

Changelings are horrible shapeshifting creatures that were inadvertantly released into the world by Star Swirl the Bearded, a famous historical conjurer. They've invaded several kingdoms in the past, and now it seems that for some reason they've set their sights on Ponyville.

Princess Celestia has put a magical shield around Ponyville to keep any more changelings from getting in. The shield can only be lowered from within, and only when everypony within it works together.

She has also enlisted the help of a cockatrice that she found in the Everfree Forest. The cockatrice will come to the outside of the magic shield every day, and turn whatever pony he sees inside that shield into stone. He will not turn anyone back until the shield is lowered. This will allow the ponies of Ponyville to imprison anyone they suspect of being a changeling.

Princess Celestia also cast a spell that keeps any changelings in Ponyville from changing form, but the matter of identifying the ones who are already there still remains. Anypony could really be a changeling in disguise.

Fortunately, she has a solution for that too -- she has two ancient magical relics, one which can grant a pony protection from changelings for an entire day, and another which can identify whether a particular pony is a changeling.

The problem is that both of these relics work only once a day, and that if the changelings know who has them, they'll eliminate that pony first. Knowing this, Princess Celestia has distributed these relics in secret to two ponies chosen at random.

With every night that passes, the changelings kidnap a pony and tie them up them for the cockatrice, in the hopes of eliminating one of the ponies who holds a relic. And with every day that passes, all the ponies in Ponyville get together and vote on which pony they should tie up for the cockatrice, in the hopes of eliminating one of the changelings.

The shield will only lower when everypony within works together. Will it be the ponies emerging triumphantly, or will it be the changelings, leaving behind a town full of statues?[/hidden]

INTRODUCTION

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to kill (i.e. turn to stone) all mafia members (i.e. the changelings) before they outnumber the rest of the town. It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking.

The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game.

RULES

0. The GM reserves the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at his discretion.

1. All players must vote at least once per game day.

2. All players are forbidden from posting screenshots of their role PMs.

3. All players are forbidden from using encryption.

4. All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing.

5. All players are forbidden from editing or deleting previous posts of theirs.

6. All players are forbidden from cheating.

7. All players are required to play to win.

8. All roles are selected randomly.

ELABORATION OF RULES

[hidden]

0. I can't know in advance who will try to break or bend rules, or how. So, as situations arise, I will resolve them as closely to the intention of the written rules as I can, and will provide a public explanation of why and how I chose to take such action.

1. Everyone who signs up for this game must post in this thread (with a vote) at least once every game day. If you don't think you can participate to that extent, please don't sign up.

2. This is more a formality than anything: all role PMs have been posted in the setup information later in this post, and all players (regardless of alignment) will receive identical copies of the innocent prisoner role PM. The point of this rule is to forbid "gaming" the role PMs to determine alignments; this is a game of reading people, not outguessing the GM.

3. Encryption is defined as posting an encoded message on public channels which an average person would require outside tools to decode. It is perfectly acceptable to leave "hidden messages" in your posts (for example, spelling out "I CAN PROTECT YOU FROM CHANGELINGS" with the first letters of every sentence), but as a rule of thumb, if you don't think the average player could decode it without a decryption service, don't post it.

4. All in-game communications should be kept within the thread. The changelings may PM each other, and PMs to/from the GM (me!) are allowed; aside from this, there should be no other forms of private messaging.

5. Don't edit or delete your posts. Maybe all you're doing is fixing a misspelling, but all we can see is that the post was edited. That makes it look like you passed a secret message, and then removed the message when you thought the right person had received it. Make sure your messages are exactly the way you want them to appear *before* you post them. There is a preview function in the forum.

6. This is a catch-all rule intended to preserve the spirit of the game. If you're considering saying or doing something that may be against the spirit of the game, PM me about it before saying/doing it and I'll let you know whether it's allowed or not.

7. This rule simply means that your actions should in some conceivable way advance your win condition as stated in your role PM. This rule is somewhat subjective, because the difference between a mistake and sabotage is sometimes hard to determine; I will err away from assuming malevolence where reasonably possible. This also means that if you need to leave the game for any reason, you should not simply drop out, but should message me first so I can determine the best course of action.

8. I will determine all of the roles randomly. Maybe I'll roll dice, maybe I'll just refresh jean-luc's avatar. Whichever I do, I won't be choosing people's roles, and people won't be choosing their own roles. So don't think that begging and pleading will get you the role you want.[/hidden]

PENALTIES

The penalty for breaking one of the above rules is decided at the GM's discretion, up to and including immediate removal from the game and/or sanctions from future games. Removal and/or sanction are instruments of last resort and will be used only if absolutely necessary. A player removed from the game may or may not have their role revealed on removal, depending on the circumstances surrounding their removal.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SPAM

Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting; or, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game) is not banned by rule in this game. A mechanic exists to curb any advantage that spamming as a tactic may confer; please reference the "VOTING" section below for more information. Suffice to say that spamming isn't worth anyone's time in this setup, and it is frowned upon, so while you may not be *banned* from doing it, you still shouldn't do it.

VOTING

There are two levels of voting in this game. The first level of voting is for whom you intend to kill. Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes (pound signs / number signs / hashtags) before your intended vote target. (EX: ##VOTE Twilight Sparkle) You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as I can understand who you're referencing you're good. If you don't use double octothorpes then I won't see it when I ctrl+f through the thread and your vote may not be counted.

The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days are set to 48 hours long, and nights to 24 hours long; however, players may instead elect to end the day as soon as a majority is reached (called a "quick hammer" or simply "hammer"). Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes before the word end. (EX: ##END) The game will switch to the hammer mechanic for the duration of that day once a majority of players choose to do so.

If you are not able to vote before the hammer is dropped, you will not be penalized for failing to vote during that day.

If two or more players are tied at day's end, the player with the oldest vote on him/her will be killed.

REPLACEMENTS

A player wishing to drop out may be replaced with another person if the need arises before the end of the first day. Replacement is not guaranteed, and after the first day no replacement requests will be accepted for balance purposes.

TURN DURATION

This game's days will last 48 hours and nights will last 24 hours, unless cut short by in-game mechanics (e.g. hammer). Days and nights might last a little longer if they end at and odd time when I'm not available to post. Extensions may be granted at my discretion, but don't count on it.

THE GAMEMASTER

The GM for this game is sushi. PM me with any concerns (yes this is allowed) and I'll get back to you ASAP.

FORMAT INFORMATION

2 changelings

1 protector (has the protection relic)

1 detective (has the detection relic)

? regular ponies (as many as we can get)

ROLE PMs:

[hidden]

Pony:

You are a pony. During the day you may vote to turn someone to stone; the candidate who receives the most votes will be turned to stone at the end of the day. You have no night actions. You win once all the changelings have been eliminated, assuming that at least one innocent pony survives to the end of the game.

Changeling:

You are a changeling! During the day you may vote to turn someone to stone; the candidate who receives the most votes will be turned to stone at the end of the day. During the night, you may talk to your partner and vote on who to kidnap. You two are and . You may vote not to kidnap anyone. You win once nothing can stop you from eliminating all of the innocent ponies. Additionally, you will receive a copy of the Pony role PM in the following message. You may PM your changeling partner as much as you wish, but no other players. Please include the GM in your PMs to the other changeling, so that the GM will know who you intend to kidnap.

Detective:

You are the detective! During the day you may vote to turn someone to stone; the candidate who receives the most votes will be turned to stone at the end of the day. During the night you may select one player to investigate (by PMing the GM); at the end of the night you will be told whether that player is a changeling or not. You win once all changelings have been eliminated, assuming that at least one innocent pony survives to the end of the game. Additionally, you will receive a copy of the Pony role PM in the following message.

The Protector:

You are the protector! During the day you may vote to turn someone to stone; the candidate who receives the most votes will be turned to stone at the end of the day. During the night you may select one player to protect (by PMing the GM); if that player would otherwise be kidnapped that night, the player will survive. You will be notified if your target was going to be kidnapped that night, and your target will be notified that they were protected by the protector. You may protect yourself, but not on subsequent nights. You win once all changelings have been eliminated, assuming that at least one innocent pony survives to the end of the game. Additionally, you will receive a copy of the Innocent Pony role PM in the following message.

[/hidden]

Once again, the forum will only allow you to PM five people at a time, so when I send out the Pony PM you will see (at the most) four other names. That doesn't mean that the people who did not receive the message are not innocent ponies -- it's just the way the forum works that I couldn't include you all in one message.

That wasn't exactly what I meant when I said you should simplify the rules a little bit. Large walls of text might intimidate potential newcomers.

Also, I'm joining again.

I suppose I will join.

But a couple of clarification questions ('figured I'd include them in the thread in case anyone else is unsure):

1. Can you only PM your changeling partner at night?

2. By "Please include the GM in your PMs to the other changeling, so that the GM will know who you intend to kidnap.", you are saying that you want a copy of all the PMs the changelings send to each other? Or only the one that includes their decision?

"If this can be avoided, it should. If it can't, then it would be better if it could be. If it happened and you're thinking back to it, try and think back further. Try not to avoid it with your mind. If any of this is possible, it may be helpful. If not, it won't be."

Everyone is welcome. The more the merrier. :)

1. Can you only PM your changeling partner at night?

I didn't think this would matter as much to the game until after I saw the last one played. The rules as I copied and pasted them don't explicitly forbid daytime PMs, and they do say you can PM your partner as much as you wish, so I'll say that daytime PMs are legal.

2. By "Please include the GM in your PMs to the other changeling, so that the GM will know who you intend to kidnap.", you are saying that you want a copy of all the PMs the changelings send to each other? Or only the one that includes their decision?

I suppose it's up to you. I don't mind seeing all the PMs. It's neat to see what's going on in that aspect of the game. On the other hand, all I really need to see is a confirmation from each changeling player that this is their actual decision. (There was an incident in the last game where I assumed that one player was speaking for both, which will not happen again.)

Count me in! But c'mon, I have to change my signature again?

By the way, you definitely should edit the top of the first thread to link to this one.

I don't visit as often as I used to. If you want me to see something, make sure to quote a post of mine or ping me @jean-luc
