Mistgod and Melian's Fantasy RPG Dungeons, Art and Ideas

I have decided to create a thread where Melian and I will share our ongoing creation of the Mist World RPG setting.  This setting has been being used for hundreds of games of Dungeons and Dragons/Pathfinder, over the course of 30 years of RPG gaming.  It fits in the art section of Tulpa Info for these reasons:

  • I draw and paint places, creatures and characters from the adventure stories and settings.
  • My thoughtform Melian helps me create it all and some of the ideas are her's and some of the writing is her's.
  • My RPG setting of Mist World is closely tied to the Melian's dreamscape and episodes of the Melian Show day dreams she and I do together.
  • Many tulpamancers are RPG gamers and may enjoy reading the ideas and may even use some of it in their own games.
  • For many years Melian role played or portrayed many of the female NPCs encountered in my dungeons.  She has always been part of this story world.

Golfo’s Labyrinth

Each adventure area, room or thing Melian and I write about is only one small part of an epic huge dungeon-labyrinth created by the mad god Golfo.  Adventurers may find their way here by being teleported in somehow (sometimes brought in by Golfo himself).  The monsters are planted by Golfo and his minions or magically summoned.  The intelligent monsters are all fanatical minions and worshippers of Golfo and will often fight to the death,   “May Golfo be amused!”

Magical mushrooms provide a base food source for the denizens of Golfo’s labyrinth, and come in many flavors and sizes.  Glowing magic crystals, that grow naturally out of the rock, provide light in most areas.  Other areas may have continuous magic flames or glow crystal lamps placed by Golfo’s minions.  Some place have phosphorescent moss.

Golfo’s Labyrinth is part of the greater setting of Mist World.  Everywhere within Golfo’s Labyrinth can be found patches of magic mists and low lying mists.  The mists are not cold and wet, but are more like ectoplasmic in nature, clingy and almost sentient.  There are many varieties of magic mists and some can have magical effects on a living being who encounters them.

Teleporting or other dimensional travel is inhibited (by Golfo himself) in many areas of the labyrinth, prohibiting spells such as teleport, dimension door, or passwall from functioning.  Monster summoning spells still function (Golfo loves those).

Every so often we will post our latest thing.  We will start by providing a link to our latest adventure area "The Yeti and Snow Rabbit Epic Caverns".  It is in a PDF published on Deviantart.  I am sorry if your browser or phone has trouble opening it.  If you cant' access Deviantart, you will be out of luck on some of the links we will be providing.  But, you will still be able to see the related art we post and some of the ideas.

Nifty! Have you ever given the World of Darkness system a go? The aesthetic's kind of a bore, but it's the most intuitive system I've ever played. I take it that lucid dreams are literally an intuitive, organic sort of thing, I like to call lucid dreaming "nature's video game console". I personally like mushrooms because they sometimes act like plants when they're not, and some look like food when they're...very much not.

Thanks, nifty is good! Yeah you guessed it! Our lucid dreams are a big inspiration for ideas for the RPG games. Nope, we have never tried World of Darkness. I thought Mistgod had tried every system out there too.

In Mist World, mushrooms are very nutritious and delicious! They come in a variety of flavors too.

Okay today was Gaming Day. My wife, my brother and I played a game of Pathfinder/Dungeons and Dragons for about four hours. Currently my wife is the Dungeon Master for the Emerald Spire Super Dungeon by Paizo.

My wife is playing a human cleric named Ril. My brother is playing a gnome rogue named Picket. I am playing Gus, a human fighter, and Turon, a human wizard. Turon is actually a human clone of the god of magic, also named Turon (long story there. The original Turon was my first D and D character 31 years ago). He also happens to be a human midget and not a halfling.

Today we finished off level three of the Emerald Spire, destroying a clockwork construct and a wight.

After taking a break from the Emerald Spire Super Dungeon we decided to play a little of Golfo's Labyrinth. (see the OP for details on what that is). For that campaign I am the Dungeon Master.

My character is Snig, the goblin cleric/wizard. Melian's character is Miriel, the halfling alchemist. My wife is playing a troll fighter named Max. My brother is running a character who a plushie construct, like an animated sentient doll, named The Count (he is a vampire like the Sesame Street Count).

We only got a few rooms in to the latest adventure area of Golfo's Labyrinth when the power went out and we lost air conditioning and light. We would have kept playing but it is over 100 degrees and we were sweating like pigs. So we called the game for the day and will get back together on Wednesday next week.

How does my thoughtform Melian play Miriel? I dictate for her. In other words I tell my players what she is saying about the game and narrate what her character is doing. What is fun is everyone knows Melian is behind Miriel and they love that actually.

Nifty! Have you ever given the World of Darkness system a go?

Mistgod, if you do check it out, you should start with Changeling: The Dreaming. I have a hunch it's your sort of thing. Don't get confused though: there's also a line called Changeling: The Lost, which is very different.

But this is an interesting thread. I look forward to reading more.

Thanks! We will definitely check that out! Melian and I really, really needed a change of direction on this forum away from contrary cynicism. I hope people find this Mistgod-Melian stuff a more upbeat, positive and interesting.

The Fundamental Truth of Reality in Mist World

The Definition of Reality: The shared perception of an objective and seemingly tangible environment by a collection of self aware sentient beings. - As it is written in the Ashanti Codex at the Sanctuarium College of Mist Sciences by Professor Emeritus, Ashanti, Mystic of the Grey.

I. Players as “Gamer Gods” –

A. Can a group of Dungeons and Dragons nerds bring a game world into "reality" through a process of sub-creation in which the story becomes so manifestly real it affects the players psychologically and perhaps even physically? It doesn't requires drugs to induce an altered perception of reality. What is real anyway? Story telling and myth making are as old as human kind. In another age, the stories told by shaman of the adventures and antics of creatures in the spirit world were real to those who listened to them. It was part of the universe of the listeners and their perception of reality.

B. You haven't played Dungeons and Dragons truly well, until one night you have to take a break to let everyone shake off the effects of intense emotion and drama. Do your players truly immerse themselves into the role they are playing? Do your players call you during the week truly concerned about what is going to happen to their dear character? After the game, do you talk about events in the game world as if they really happened? Do you feel emotions about it? Yeah, then, my friend, you are playing the game right!

II. Anything that is real exists only by will of the Gamer Gods

A. Reality is a continuum of dreamscapes from nothing but potential to exist in the mind of the Gamer Gods to truly manifest reality in which sentient beings experience their world and interact with it.

B. Pseudo Reality - Everything in Mist World is “pseudo real” dreamscape somewhere along the reality continuum.

1. How manifestly real an environment is depends of several factors:

a. the frequency and scope of reality shifts

b. the scope of the environment, dreamscape or sub-world

c. the presence and number of beings with awareness of the fundamental truths of reality in Mist World

d. the number of sentient beings perceiving the environment

e. the amount of emphasis and focus brought to the environment by the Gamer Gods

III. Perception of the Fundamental Truth of Reality

A. awareness of reality shifts and their consequences

B. awareness of and knowledge of the Gamer Gods

C. awareness of the process of dreamscape sub-creation (dreams are pseudo real), meta-gaming, the cosmic game, the cosmic scriptures (laws of the Gamer Gods), and rolling of the cosmic dice

D. ability to perceive the level of manifest reality of a particular environment, dreamscape or subworld.

IV. Sanctuarium - The Most Manifestly Real Part of Mist World

A. Mist World’s “Material Plane”

B. Large number of persons with perception of Fundamental Truth of Reality

1. The Warrior Mystics, the Sanctuary of Knowledge,

2. Ashanti – author of the Ashanti Codex

3. The Mystics of the Cycle (particularly the shaman Melian)

4. Turon Tursar arch wizard

5. The scholars, mystics and sages of the College of Mist Sciences

6. The Lantern Tender’s Guild

C. Many areas associated with few reality shifts (most unchanged)

1. Nexus City, Turon’s Tavern, the Sanctuary of Knowledge (Grey Mystics), Avril’s Tower, Nob’s Tower, home of the mystics of the cycle

D. Beyond Sanctuarium’s borders reality less stable

1. more like temporary dreamscapes

2. common believe/knowledge of people from Sanctuarium

3. Sanctuarium, the last truly real part of the material world

4. reality maintained by the orb lantern’s and lantern tender’s guild

V. Sub-creation of Deities, Spirits and Monsters

1. deities and an associated divine realm can be manifest into pseudo-real dreamscapes within the Mist Filled Realm by a preponderance of believers or by the fervent faith of a single believer. Result = great diversity in religion and gods and spirits.

2. most monsters were manifest into reality from dreams

VI. Settings Beyond Sanctuarium

A. Temporary dreamscapes = short duration sub-worlds temporarily manifested within the Mist Filleld Realm

B. Epic dreamscapes = dreamscape subworlds with greater scope and closer to truly real (Eversea, Sylvanar).

C. Other campaign settings such as Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms

1. actually epic dreamscapes

So yesterday was another Gaming Day! We (my wife, my brother, Melian and I) played Dungeons and Dragons/Pathfinder and our characters continued on exploring the latest adventure area of Golfo's Labyrinth in Mist World. It was Acorn, The Count, Max the troll, Snig and Miriel. I am not sure if I mentioned Acorn before. Acorn is my brother's elf druid. Anyway this section of Golfo's Labyrinth was a series of cold caves, covered in ice. We encountered yeti, ice golems, a glacier toad, arctic snow rabbits, a fiendish pixie, and a demon warrior of some kind. We also "rescued" a lot of treasure items from the evil monsters. The god Golfo apparently was much amused, which is a good thing (usually).

The power did not go out this time and we had plenty of gaming munchies and the air conditioning.

I really like this idea. Reminds me of a few things I've read. I know there was a trilogy of novels that had a premise like this, but the name isn't coming to mind at the moment.
