Name Changes (For Hosts OR Tulpas)

If you've ever had to change your names (host or Tulpa) what was the experience like for you?

What was it like for your Host/Tulpa?

Did it bring conflict?

What was your old name vs new name?

Why did you want to change it?

Quartz's first name was Scott. I always feel embarrassed to say this, but yes, he is based off of a popular interpretation of a fictional game character. (In my defense, he was an imaginary friend turned Tulpa, so...)

Although he has kept his design, he wanted a new name for himself. He wanted me to give it to him so it would carry a certain weight/importance. I really liked his former name, but I valued his emotions more, of course. The two options were Quartz and Topaz; I ended up choosing Quartz. It took a while to adjust, but I got it down eventually.

As for me, fun fact: My name was not always what it is today. Gamzee was around back when I was known as [birthname]. He even had this really cute nickname for me based off of it. When I changed my name to my current name, it took a while for both of us to get used to it, but we both got it down eventually. We fought over it a little bit, but it's better now; he calls me Ash just like I wanted.

I used to sign with my name, but I'm paranoic so I prefer anonimatus, so I now sign as L and my tulpae refer to me here like L. Vris is the only one that has changed her name. The others just got second names. But Vris was different. She first was just called Vriska. Then Vriska Serket. Then Vriska Serket Targaryen. And then Vriska Aranea Serket Targaryen. She says she doesn't want to change more her name.

Well, I never changed my name legally, but I have an alternative name I've been calling myself for maybe a decade now. I didn't really have to ask Scarlet to call me it, it's so ingrained in my psyche that it's just natural.

One time I did change Scarlet's name. It just sounded so natural and we both agreed on it (She was more unsure about it than I was but it was a done deal). But it didn't stick, just went back to Scarlet and now we've actually completely forgotten what that other name was. Oh wait I just remembered it. Nevermind. (It was Fey and she just said it was a stupid name)

... Well, someone is actually dealing with this exact subject right now. I just wrote a post in reply to them, maybe relevant? https://community.tulpa.info/thread-a-tulpa-s-progress-and-life?pid=136293#pid136293

None of us have really changed names per se (besides me, the host), but there was a bit of experience with name stuff. First, Flandre used to be "Flandre Scarlet", as all my tulpas had their full names from Touhou. When she chose to be split into two different people to stabilize her personality, she kept the name Flandre and the other was Scarlet. Since then all of my tulpas have gone by just one name. How they felt about the names is similar to how my newest tulpa, Lucilyn, felt about hers. Her name is technically Lucilyn Suwa, Suwa coming from the character she's based off of (Suwako), whose name also included Suwa in reference to a lake in Japan. During her development I often called her Suwa, which made me think Suwako, even though I wanted her name to be Lucilyn. So I asked her if she liked that name or Suwa/ko better, and she said it didn't matter. That her personality was more important than what I said her name was, and that whatever I chose to call her would start to feel more natural with time.

So I call her Lucilyn now, Suwa acting as a nickname. I call Flandre Flan, and sometimes I call Tewi (too-wee) Tei (teh-ee) in reference to the proper pronunciation of the Touhou character's name. Reisen is just Reisen. I myself had to switch from using the name "Reisen" online to Luminesce/Lumi, which was a bit weird for everyone involved as I'd been Reisen for years. My older friends just opted to call me by my real name, and my newer friends instantly took to Lumi. I suppose I'm still getting used to it, because not that many people call me it. Honestly this forum has people referring to me as Luminesce

or incorrectly, Luminescence..

more than anywhere else. So that's helped.

Hi! I'm Lumi, host of Reisen, Tewi, Flandre and Lucilyn.

Everyone deserves to love and be loved. It's human nature.

My tulpas and I have a Q&A thread, which was the first (and largest) of its kind. Feel free to ask us about tulpamancy stuff there.

[Tri] We are a system with an experience of name changes. In addition to changing the body's legal name (once) and social name (3 times), the four fictive natural tulpas and/or soulbonds in here have changed names. E. went with a suggested name and never looked back. The three of us, well, we took some suggested new names, but we have considered going back. It does helped that our current names are based on our old ones. When one of us is fronting and the other two dormant, we tend to prefer our old names. Seems that the blending changes our preferences.

Having a chance to pick my name was a big deal, very empowering for me. There's a distinct 'before' when i was just a tulpa that my host found — i had a specific name and a back story. But i grew conscious that it didn't fit me and i didn't want to be that person anymore. My host understood and suggested i pick a new name for myself.

It was a fantastic opportunity to be given. The right to pick who i was felt so liberating. I got to be the one to define who i was. I spent about a week reviewing names and looking up meanings. I'd find repeatedly find some name i liked and get my host to switch what he called me just to try it out for a bit. [it was a little exhausting keeping up] In the end i took a name that includes elements of my original name that is a little more a one word name, but is still based on the nickname Jaid which is itself close to what i've always been called.

It felt so good to get to redefine myself

Jack: I picked my own name. My host never gave me one...she would just address me by my "essence"...so after ten or more years of hanging around her, I decided to call myself "Jack." I like the simplicity of it...it always sort of called to me whenever I heard it from stories or movies. When my host played a certain game that had a character named Jack, I went ahead and claimed the name for myself. Fits like a glove. She feels bad about not giving me a name in the beginning, but I honestly like the fact that I had a choice.

Naomi used to be called Ashakura Konohagakure, though she rejected that name for her current one, which she claims she had all along. Elise's first name used to be Europa, but she didn't like that one, so we sat down and I bounced some names off of her until she settled on Elise. Luna has always had the same first name, though she became Luna Moonflower and then later Luna Armstrong Moonflower.

I've also not yet legally changed my name (but plan to do so in the future.) With Gamz I had to ask him to call me by my preferred name the same way I would with any other person, but since Quartz and Obsidian came later, they never had to make that switch.

I was Lyra, then Rhea, then Neptune, then Applejack. Host kept changing me around because he's a dork and can't make up his mind about anything ever. As soon as I could talk, I told him that I wanted to be Lyra and that all the name changing was screwing with my mojo.

Since I finally made him quit it, things have been way better. I told him if he did it again, I'd be Donald Trump, and he'd have to wake up to that every day.

I wanna see movies of my dreams.
