Roleplaying without accidentally creating more tulpas

Recommended Posts

Luna (host): Basically, I already have a tulpa, and want to continue my hobbies of playing roleplaying tabletop games (like D&D), forum-based roleplay, roleplay-heavy video games, and writing short stories and maybe someday a novel.

But I don't want to inadvertently create any more tulpas. Claire is awesome and I love her as a sister; wouldn't dream of getting rid of her (also that would be murder, and that's just not cool at all), but I don't want any more. Claire was actually created inadvertently by having an imaginary friend in college who developed into something more overtime (I was doing narration and puppeted her for awhile [before she became sapient] without even knowing what that was; it was just something I did for fun), and I want to avoid having that happen again with roleplay or book/story characters who I get really involved with. How can I maintain a separation from my characters so they don't become sentient and sapient while still inhabiting their personas effectively to write well? Good characterization requires really getting inside the head of your character and seeing how they tick and all that, but can I do that without making characters into tulpas? I'd really like to continue these hobbies, which are a big part of my life, without that occurring, and I feel like I need safeguards for that.

Make NPCs. I had that issue with things I wrote, and then I came to realizing my wonderland was empty. I grabbed some characters I made and threw them in it, who have their own lives, but occupy a smaller amount of thought. You can have all the characters you want inside, but know that Claire is the hero of this story and it's a one man party. Everyone else is just on the backburner.

I can't believe I didn't think of this last night when we were talking. Rather than trying to find a way to make RP characters and keep them from being tulpas, be those characters. Literally, change your form to the character you are creating, take a 1st person viewpoint, and be the character; remembering to consider the form and character to be you (a facet if you will) rather than separate. Then, you will have no tulpa being made. This is why I do not have two more additional natural tulpas. Rather than being an observer, I was the characters in question and thus they were me, not tulpas. Also, this is in part why my 4 natural tulpas were not developing very quickly. Every now and then, I would be them which stunted their growth (even though I did not know anything about this sort of thing and that they were not hollow, it still was not OK and I am still surprised they are not bitter or anything). Interesting, I still use one of the forms and over the years, the personalities of the characters I was did bleed back into the rest of my personality.

Just don't expect them to become tulpae and they almost certainly won't. Plenty of people roleplay without accidentally creating tulpae.

I come out of hibernation once in a blue moon.

They/them pronouns, please. (I've been using this display name since 2012 and people won't recognize me if I change it.)

Luna: Thanks for the replies. Hail, I like the idea of "becoming" the characters to avoid the risk. Authors often admit that nearly all characters in their work are variations on themselves or at least have a bit of themselves in them, so I might be able to get convincing characterization out of it if I treat it similarly to being an actor, perhaps.

Claire: Maybe I could become some of the characters too?

Luna: That seems like a fun idea. I wonder if Claire playing other characters in a game would help her development or stunt/scramble it....

Fennecgirl, I will certainly keep that in mind, though my paranoia will probably try to tell me that it *could* happen, so on some level I'll be expecting it even if I try not to expect it...but by trying not to expect it to happen combined with inhabiting (or having Claire inhabit) them as a persona, I think I'll be fine.

(for the record, I was most worried about creating accidental tulpae because I heard that once you've created one, it's easier for it to happen again)

At first I was agaisnt this, but now I'm with you...Claire just spoke to me.Tell the tulpas eigth dimensional selves ''to go fuck off and not make a tulpa as I'm doing something that involves a character.'

Of course *hugs Claire* Claire my dear you may say that too if you also wish for me.

Stay it with Power And Passion-yes this is a VOM song. But the 8d cocreators must know that you don't want me tulpas and well claire wants me to tell you that both 3rd dimensional and 8th dimensional persons make tulpas simultenously, and I know just aboot everyone in that dimension just if you give you any trouble just report to me.

It's not like roleplaying always results in a tulpa. It can, if you treat the character as an actual person and interact with them regularly as though they were real. But, as long as you consider them to be imaginary characters, that chance is rather slim. If not, most, if not all DnD players would have tulpas. That wouldn't make much sense, right?

What Sierra said. I'm a writer, and none of my fictional characters have become tulpas. I think the mistake people make is in treating every character like a tulpa.

As long as you remember that characters are fictional and not tulpas, you should be fine. I've been RPing with my fiancee both in writing, gaming, and LARPing for at least the past 6 or 7 years, and none of our characters have become tulpas.
