Sentience debate

Vin and I had this little chat. She identifes as nonhuman, even though her form is human. I think of her as a human sentience lacking a body.

Her reasoning behind this is that "Humans are defined by their choices, humans have to worry about food, so they do things in order to get food" humans are driven by hormones, pain, senses, and many other things that tulpas lack, therefore, she isn't human.

I, however, believe that Vin is human, because the thing that processes her sentience is a human brain. She can feel my hunger, and knows when I'm in pain.

Anyway, I'm split 50/50. What do you think?

You know, a tulpa survives just as well as a normal human without food.

In that they both starve.

As for "hormones, pain, senses, and many other things that tulpas lack", tulpas are also affected by hormones, and they can get the other two if they just possess the body.

So she doesn't seem to have much of an argument here.

Doc: Childhood friend turned servitor gone rogue turned host who's bad at feeling emotions.

Meti: Overly lewd Tupper.

CT, who is also called Jeremy: Original personality whose default emotion is anger.

I just want to say, I am driven by all those things. I mean influenced. I get all sorts of hormone related urges. And I love eating. I certainly feel pain when I am possessing. And I interpret our sense data in my own way.

Oddly, my host does not identify as human. She thinks she is an intelligence. And she thinks all intelligences are the same, regardless of species.

I identify as a changeling, but at the same time I don't, because a person is not their body. Since I come from a human mind, I identify as a human, but I also don't, because I am not a normal human.

Host comments in italics. Tulpa's log. Tulpa's guide.

I would say she's human. Assuming you are following the scientific explanation (if not well then my argument is pointless), she's generated by the human mind and is therefore human.

And ya, if a host decides to stop eating all together, that tulpa will die with em if they starve. Same goes for other stuff.

The all seeing, all knowing dorito god!

It's just philosophy. Biologically, she's part of a human body, so she "is human". Philosophically most tulpas define themselves as people, but a lot just "tulpa" and others something else or nothing in specific. My tulpas are "people", to me and to themselves.

My tulpas and I have a Q&A thread, which was the first (and largest) of its kind. Feel free to ask us about tulpamancy stuff there.

A human liver is not a human, So your statement that tulpas are biologically human is about the same as the statement that trees are wood. Since one is a material and one is a lifeform, the statement is not true.

Your social identity isn't a human either, nor is your consciousness. If you want the whole body to qualify for human-ness, none of us are human, the entirety of our bodies are. Your liver isn't human, but you aren't the human without that liver too. Unless you're missing a liver I guess. I'm actually saying the wood in a tree is a tree. What I should say is the wood in a tree is part of the tree. But anyways, philosophy times two, if your tulpa isn't human neither are you. And if you switch, even if you were human, you aren't anymore.

Semantics. The only objective part of this discussion is that tulpas are a phenomenon taking place in a human brain, just as hosts (as opposed to tulpas) are. Whether a thoughtform can consider itself human or not is just opinion. It can certainly be thought of and treated like one though.

Seeing how the world is, I personally say you should treat them better than a human, and vice-versa, but going on past that would be me rambling on early in the morning.

It is my personal belief that the "host" is also a tulpa. They are just the particular tulpa that the system has chosen to front (whether by conscious choice or by subconscious default).

I also believe there is no such thing as "singlets".

Everyone is a plural system. We all have an inner child that is separate from ourselves. Our ego, the version of us that most often interacts with the world, is simply a tulpa your inner child has constructed in order to understand, and protect it from, the world.

  • 2 months later...

I've spent most of my life surrounded by catgirls and foxgirls and other creatures (: Somewhere along the way I picked up a language where I call people who don't have tulpas "humans", people who have them "hosts" and tulpas as well... "tulpas" (:

I'm pretty disconnected from the outside world and humanity in general (I do have some human friends though) so somehow in my own little world tulpas aren't called human.

I don't really consider myself to be a human but I wanna be treated as a sentient individual.
