So... why exactly are tulpas so popular with Bronies?

You kinda have to wonder, don't you? I myself only heard of this phenomenon by browsing /mlp/. Theoretically it could have been any other fandom. Let's be honest here, every big internet-fandom consists to a very big part of lonely people. Now you may argue that the show it's based on has a big focus on the concept of companionship but it's hardly the only popular piece of media that does that.

So... why wasn't it Pokemon, Digimon or any other big fandom?

Some probable reasons:

-The show is about a perfect technicolour utopia, so they're used to fantasizing.

-Ponies are something that most people ridicule, so they're used to defying norms and being laughed at.

-Foreveralones.

-Waifus.

The above post does not contain facts.

q2's the host, QB's the tulpa.

There are other fandoms, but to a much lesser extent. Take QB, Nikodemos' tulpa, and the many pokemans. I did wonder about this myself.

My opinions are all subject to change.

I see where you are coming from but MLP: FIM is hardly the only fandom to which those points apply. In fact i'd almost argue most fanbases consist to a pretty big part of socially awkward, lonely and nerdy people who know that their fandom would be considered embarassing by many people and use the object of their fandom as a form of escapism.

I wouldn't say that; most television show fandoms are widely accepted worldwide and have thousands of fans who don't even use the internet. Doctor Who is a big obvious name there, for example, and there are many others.

One other reason it became popular with bronies is that /mlp/ exists.

4chan is a good place to throw out concepts like tulpas, but most boards would reject it. /mlp/ wouldn't.

A huge amount of people here come from "boards that don't hate tulpas", such as /x/, /a/, and /mlp/.

Ponies are the newest thing, most of the ponies in the show are female and not as aggressive to our so roneries, the world is bright and happy and full of adventure, good feels and friendship. They do a lot to be someone's friend and that is what the bronies want, someone who accepts them for who they are and doesn't get discouraged when forever alones lash out at them. Because the ponies understand and do everything to make you feel better.

Or something, fuck if I know.

i always just assumed it was because there isn't really much to the show at all. meaning they would try to associate anything with it.

Every fandom associates every single goddamn thing with its source material.

That's indeed a pretty good point. It's probably true that a place like 4chan is generally more open to bizarre sounding ideas like that of a tulpa.

It's true that the show, due to it's idealistic nature, attracts those who seek a form of escapism in it. And that the fact, that it's maincast consists of 6 females with fairly attractive personalities speaks to their wish of romantic companionship. In other words, it appeals to the kind of person who may be desperate enough for someone to talk to that they'd be ready to just create someone in their mind (There's just no way to put it that doesn't make it sound insane, is there?).

But seeing how many people there are in the fanbases of various animes that use the word "waifu" unironically it makes you wonder why it hasn't become as much of a trend there.

That's the troube with the whole waifu thing imo, whenever someone says a character is their waifu you have no way of knowing if they're saying that in a tongue-in-cheek manner, if they have a tulpa of that character, or something in-between. If I had to guess, I'd say that probably between 5 and 20% of waifufags have a tulpa of their waifu, but they may or may not realize it's a tulpa.
