To what extent can I base my tulpa on a fictional character?

Recommended Posts

I read a lot that a tulpa should not be based on a fictional character too strictly because it can cause identity conflicts. But how lenient is this rule?

I have decided to base my tulpa's form on TARS from Interstellar, because I am not very good at visualising, and I feel like a big cuboid would be easy to visualise xD

But will my tulpa be negatively influenced by this? I don't want a tulpa that can't feel emotion, or one that is upset that I chose a form based on how easy it is to visualise.

Thanks in advance.

There's generally nothing wrong with basing their form, name, or voice directly off of the fictional character they're inspired by. If your tulpa doesn't like it, they'll change it on their own (it is important that you let them do so if they wish). For the most part, the key point for fictives is simply that they are not the character; they are an independent person and should be allowed to deviate from the character however they choose to do so.

Yo, my name is Sean and I'm the host of 2 tulpas: Sente and Mae. You'll know when they're talking because Sente talks in yellow text and Mae talks in blue text.

I do hope you get some good responses, because i want to know more about this myself. I bet this 'rule' is not something hard, like a commandment, 'thou shalt not steal,' kind of thing. I would like to assume it's based on some empirical data, even if that data is subjective like, 'well, folks, I am making this guide and I based a tulpa off my favorite character from friends, and you know, Joey isn't really joey. He's kind of depressed and looks like the deformed mat damon doll from Team America,' 'yeah, come to think of it, my Joy from the Bugaloos also wasn't as joyful as I remember...' and then they decided, oh, well maybe we should make this a general rule of thumb. I am purposely being ridiculous; can't you see tulpas in therapy. 'my host had a crush on Fara Fawcett, so does he love me, or Fara, I am so confused.' me, playing therapist. Why are you confused? He doesn't even know Fara. Sure, he's seen her picture, had that 70's iconic poster on his wall, and watched Logan's Run until his beta quit playing, but that doesn't mean he prefers Fara, cause you're the one in his head... It almost seems like a well, fleshed out character from a book or a movie would work out better. Anyway, I am looking forward to the responses you get for this.

I want to encourage you not to play down your ability to visualize something. Clearly, i don't know you, so maybe it's really as bad as you think it is, but most the time, people who say this tend to visualize a little better than than they give themselves credit for, but if you imagine you should be seeing things in 3d holographic display quality with tags, then it could be you just have an unrealistic idea of it means to visualize something. I personally suck at visualizing. What this means for me is, if you asked me to draw something other than a stick figure with a happy face emoticon, you will be seriously disappointed. I can draw a map and get you to your destination, but it won't be to scale. But, if I were asked to sit down and do a guided mediation, I do alright. I am auditory before visual. I bet, if I asked you to close your eyes and imagine a chair; I think you you'd get a chair. I might even get you to imagine sitting in said chair.

Where I am going with this is, oh, yeah: don't dumb down your tulpa and go with steve from minecraft, or the robot mentioned above, because you think you can't visualize. it's okay if you do, but it want be your tulpa that will be upset. You might be. More than likely, you're tulpa is going to love you just because you invested the time in them to bring them into existence. I think I saw a guide from this forum that said a tulpa could be anything, even a rock, which I suppose is alright, if you're allergic to animals. I think they were just making the point there is no limit to what your tulpa could be. They will still contain emotions, and they will still love you. (Even a tulpa robot will have emotions.) You could go with a ball of light, or a silhouette, and perhaps when the tulpa is advanced they could assist in choosing and upgrading their form to something more fitting.

I am not great visualizing, which probably explains why I haven't established a full time, holographic companion though imposition. I think this just means for folks like you and me, it takes longer; it could also mean I am lazy and just haven't spent enough hours, but even if there is a fixed number hours, i am betting it will take me more, but this isn't a thing that we (you and me and all the others that say 'i can't visualize') can't experience because we weren't blessed with 'the gift.' there is good evidence that practicing the visualization techniques with smaller simpler items and moving up is one way to get there. I also think if your idea of perfect visualization is closing your eyes and seeing said thing as if your eyes was still open and it was really there isn't always how it is in real life visualizations; your brain still holds the actual information. Here is my argument for that. If you ever had a dream, and you didn't wake your self up because the world was all distorted because you can't visualize, then I would say, yeah, nothing wrong with your visualization. I bet if I asked you to consider your favorite movie, you could piece it all together, scene for scene, and basically tell me from beginning to the end your movie, which is more evidence you visualize just fine. Your personality may have blocks to visualizing, but your brain still visualizes. If you can stand in your room and can memorize the placement of things and then close your eyes and navigate to a light switch or a door without bumping into something, you can demonstrate to yourself the ability to orientate in 3d space, which is evidence you're visualizing just fine. You, Sir, have more than enough brain power to do this.

I hope that is helpful and encourages to give yourself a little more credit. but if not, let's keep talking.

Thank you both; you've really helped.

I don't use forums much, so I hope I'm quoting you correctly.

Yes, I know I shouldn't expect a tulpa to 'be' the character I imagine, but I just don't want them to be upset that I 'cheaped out' on their form haha.

I bet, if I asked you to close your eyes and imagine a chair; I think you you'd get a chair. I might even get you to imagine sitting in said chair.

I can't see a chair, I just know what a chair is. I could describe a chair, but I'm not 'seeing' one. And that's just a chair; the same can't be said for a complex human figure like I would assume most tulpas have. (Well, except the ~50% of tulpas that are ponies xD)

I assume you mean 'it won't be your tulpa'.

I'm just happy if my tulpa's happy, as long as they have some kind of recognisable form for me to identify them by.

We'd personally recommend avoiding any connections to a character whatsoever, due to the fact that you want your tulpa to grow into their own person and not feel pressured to be like someone else or be the way you want them to be. However, basing only their form on a character is alright so long as you make it clear to them that they are not that character and are free to change it at any time. Just, don't give them the identity of being that character, because they're not.

Tulpas will 90% of the time change their form in one way or another to match their personality once they start developing. Every sentient member of our system did just that. It's called growing up.

Okay well, add the four in our system who never changed their forms to that if you're going to use such a small sample size. I would say the very slight majority of tulpas never significantly change their forms, and the large majority (specifically on tulpa.info) do not change their forms into something else entirely.

My four tulpas were all based on Touhou characters, three of them retaining the originals' names, but despite being spontaneous before-tulpas-were-a-thing tulpas based on Touhou characters, none of them really associated themselves with the originals from the start.

That's much more dangerous when it's real people, or characters who aren't totally mentally stable. But it's mostly up to the host's responsibility and mental discipline whether it goes smoothly or not.

It's important to make tulpas because you want them to be themselves and live their own happy lives, rather than just because you want a character you like in your life. Which, doesn't seem to be what the OP is doing.

Honestly I replied solely because of your "90% claim", just because I didn't want people actually thinking it was 90%.

My point is that he should expect and allow it to happen. If it doesn't then that's that.

Thank you all for your responses! I feel much better about using a simple form for my tulpa for the time being. Hopefully by the time they want to change it I will feel more confident about my visualisation.

Your responses have been super useful :)
