What is Hypnosis?

Recommended Posts

I've heard this term being thrown around the Tulpa community but I still don't have a clue on what it entails. I just started forcing my tulpa for the first time last week and I was wondering if hypnosis could help with my tulpa's development?

There is some ambiguity in definitions, if you're looking at a broad spectrum of responses to what is hypnosis. Some of that is because different 'experts' have some different opinions about it, and there is a great deal of misinformation about it, mostly thanks to movies and poor constructed plot contrivances. Movies rarely display hypnosis accurately. Also, stage hypnosis, has incredibly impacted public perception of the phenomenon.

Hypnosis can be boiled down to a state of consciousness, typically of intense focus, and or increased relaxation. It is not 'going to sleep.' It's actually quite the opposite of sleep, but because of peculiar historical start, 'sleep' as a form of analogy stuck, and consequently, is perceived to as a part of it, and many hypnotist still use 'sleep' as a way of communicating their expectation, because almost everyone understands that they're wanting the normal daily mental functioning to quiet down. This is not a magical state of consciousness. Everyone has access to this. We encounter it by accidents infrequently through out the day. If you drive, and you've ever been at a traffic light, waiting for it to change, and it changes but you continue to sit until someone honks and 'wakes' you up, you were hypnotized. If you were having a conversation and you kind of zoned out, and it took someone saying your name to bring you back or you came back on your own and asked the person to repeat what they were saying, you passed through this 'hypnotic' state. If you ever went to the movies and were so engrossed in the movie that you actually forgot you're in a chair and there was a stranger sitting next you, you were hypnotized. You pass through this 'zone' when you go to sleep. (If you get drawn out of the movie by the annoying stranger, you were enjoying the hypnosis, or wanting to get in hypnosis, but you're tacking too many things in your environment.) If you drive, and ever drove from point a to point b and arrived safely but don't remember the journey, you were (road) hypnotized. The reason television commercials are louder than the television programs isn't just to wake the people up that fell asleep for real, but to ensure your focus has shifted from where you were to where they want you. The reason they put hot girls with cars or have them drinkings sodas is because it gets you to buy the product. (Serious hypnosis. Subliminal messages is a back door form of hypnosis.) Nothing, and I mean nothing, at the store is randomly placed. If you bought something that wasn't on your list, you were influenced by a hypnotic suggestion. (If you're not shopping with a list, you're at serious risk of impulse buying.) If you go to a casino, you will find it dark, and you will hear the sounds of coins falling and award alarms, and everything is set to draw you in and have you surrender your money, because it sounds like someone is winning. The dark draws tto the lights, the game... Your cellphone is the most insidiously clever device ever invented, as it is design to exploit biological and psychological needs, which technically might be considered more operant conditioning, but I would say, the 'hypnosis' part is you telling yourself you can't be without it. (It may be a combination of that. (or, maybe i am reaching, but if you can't put it down and walk away, isn't that at least interesting? (and knowing that, and that you're going to disregard that, isn't that interesting. (which that could be a form of hypnosis, conditionally. If you agree, you will play a long, you may have been hypnotized by increasing your potential to do that. If it annoys you and you go to prove it wrong, maybe you were resisting the hypnosis, or you were hypnotizing yourself to change something. If the hypnotist suspect that you tend to be oppositional to suggestions, they will insert ambiguous suggestions, or opposite to logic. if you know they're trying to trick you, you will double the opposition, and then you're in a war game of words, of sorts, to see who can get through whose filters. (That's why some people are harder to hypnotize than others. There can be some serious game play involved.)) And you don't even have to be relaxed to be hypnotize. Some of the best hypnotist get people by revving up their anxiety until their brain overloads and it stalls.

There are generally three broad categories of practice. Therapeutic, stage, and self hypnosis. Therapeutic is generally with a trained professional, which could mean they were trained only in hypnosis or they're also counselors or psychologists. Just the hypnosis folks are limited in most states to entertainment or behavioral modification, like stop smoking. Some states won't allow it to be called 'therapeutic' hypnosis unless you are licensed to provide counseling, which is usually pastoral, master level, or greater. Stage hypnosis is an animal all unto itself. Some people dismiss it, that the participants are just acting. And, there is some truth to that. Every hypnosis book will say, you can't be hypnotized to do something against your will. So, with stage hypnosis, there is gestalt of expectations... If you volunteer to go up, you wanted to play, and so you give your self permission to be or do. The audience also has an expectation of what you will do. You have an expectation of what that expectation is. So, playing along is 'acting,' technically, but it is also they very thing that makes the thing work all the better. There are some great stage hypnotist. I have friend that wants to be the guy to prove it fake, and he volunteers every time with the intention of messing the stage performer up, and he has failed every time; the last time, he was asked to forget his own name, was brought out, the hypnotist asked him his name, and my was friend was thinking, "Yes, I got you MF," but he couldn't say his name to save his life, and hypnotist was like, "Doesn't that just eat your lunch?!" As if he knew my friend's intent! Self hypnosis is just what it sounds like. You're putting yourself in a certain state of mind to either increase focus, to relax, or to do both. Meditation is a form of self hypnosis. Your inner dialogue, those tapes that play like, "you're kind,' 'you're weird,' 'you will never succeed in life,' those are also a form of hypnosis. So, for example, if you say, "Oh, I am really clumsy," and then the next thing you do is drop something, it's because you will believe the last thing you told yourself, and you will believe the thing you tell yourself the most. some of these things are given to us and we carry them. Some of it, we give ourselves. Knowing this, can be liberating, because you can change those tapes. It can be hard work; depends on a number of variables.

Hypnosis as related to tulpamancy, depending on how it's used, could mean a variety of things. It depends on the author of the technique and the context. I can imagine a general use of the word means to 'trick your mind into believing something that's not true.' I am not fond of 'trick,' because though that may be technically accurate, I find the deeper implications self sabotaging. 'not true' is very sabotaging. People don't like to be lied to, we have been taught not to lie. (Yeah, we all do it, some better than others, and to ourselves all the time, but we usually do it on the down low, not direct in our face.) Language in and of itself can be very precise, or very ambiguous, and if you don't have clarity about what words mean to you, you could either get bad results, no results, or good results. If you think you're 'tricking' your mind, like you're 'fooling' yourself, but most people don't want to be 'fooled,' you're probably just spinning your wheels. The tulpa protocols are simply tools, forms of hypnosis, to get past our operating personality filters. They generally work, and the exceptions are because of the nuances in which people craft their language to get through their personal resistance and filters. You can do it by repetition. You can literally just be so doggedly persistent that you get it in there. you can work with your operating system and enhance the modalities that already work for you. The reason there is some variability in results is because of host's personality filters, the clarity of the language used, intensity, and persistence.

here's a great book, free, that is the easiest to read and understand and get you a good start in self hypnosis.
