Chit Chat Corner 2: Phobias!

Recommended Posts

Think about it like this:

When listening to a piece of music, your experience of it isn't just the sound waves being produced by the speaker. There's so much hidden meaning and context that goes into experiencing that music. Maybe you're nostalgic about it because you remember hearing it when you got your first ice cream cone. Maybe it's a genre you hate, but a funny video you like had this song in it, so you enjoy the song nonetheless. Maybe it was the last song you heard before you broke up with your ex, so you now hate the song. Maybe this was your dad's favorite song that you always listened to together, and now he's gone, so sometimes you like to listen to it, and sometimes it's too painful to listen to it.

Basically what I'm getting at is that human experience, whether listening to music or being fearful of spiders, has a lifetime's worth of context and previous experience that goes into how one feels about it at a certain time. I know that I'm afraid of dogs and hate dogs because I was sort of attacked as a kid, and the way my parents handled it in a way encouraged my fear of dogs by coddling me. Even knowing that now doesn't instantly remove that fear response from me. Just saying "I'm afraid of and hate dogs" doesn't give you all this context, but you don't need this context to accept that your friend may have this fear.

That's a very good explanation :) A guy I know has arachnophobia and he got it when he was young and living in Spain; from time to time some tarantulas invaded his room :0 he's glad the spiders here are 1-2 cm :D

Joss:

None of us are really arachnophobes, but it's easy not to be when you live in a region where you never see anything but common, harmless brown house spiders. But I can respect people who fear them. It's a smart fear. Venom, and all that.

Our host, Sparrow, has pyrophobia bad, though. Like, any time we're near open flame, she starts imagining catching on fire, or falling in, or knocking it over, etc. It would be funny, if it weren't so stressful for the rest of us to deal with it.

Personally, the only real phobia I have is Sedatephobia (fear of silence). As for Hybris, she doesn't have any phobias that she knows of.

Whenever I'm alone in a silent room, even with Hybris, it just freaks me out, like the air becomes stiff and everything feels tense, like something bad is about to happen. Bonus points if it's pitch black.
