Gwen is in fact (by her fictional lore) a genetically engineered winged human with bird DNA thrown in. The origin of her subspecies (they have viable offspring with other subspecies of humans) is a long process of secret, forbidden, and illegal bioengineering.

By the time Gwen was born, it was hundreds of years since they basically escaped captivity and founded their own mountain-top city.

In the lore of this version of Earth, eco-terrorism caused irreversible destruction of modern civilization in the 50's or so but of course it took a hundred years or more before the inevitable collapse of "modern society". Then tribal existence reined in much of the world. World population dwindled through both scarcity, bio-terrorism as well as good old fashioned tribal raids.

There were only pockets of civilization left for another couple hundred years until the last of "modern" technology was lost.

At the time of Gwen's life, you could call it splintered pre-industrial monarchies but there is industry, just not mass industry. There's no electricity or running water, but there are water towers so towns do have water and sewer. Heat and light are in the form of oil lamps and oil burners. The source of this oil is oil rich engineered crops (weeds basically) really cheap and of course, green energy. There are no horseless carriages or even horses since most larger species were hunted out of existence including the original homosapiens.

Sounds more detailed than anything we've ever had in our wonderland; at most we've just had a generic fantasy setting but the capitol was a technologically advanced floating city.

Because she spawned from a series of three books that I wrote at well over 120,000 words each. She was one of 5 main characters in two of them. Technically it's not part of our wonderland. It's dystopian, and our wonderland is idealistic.

It's a copyright infringement to spell it correctly on the menu. Think of it like an off-brand knock-off.
