Absolutely not. At least it shouldn't. Arguably I respect Simmie more than any "literal" being. If tulpamancy is not built on a foundation of love and respect, it's not worth doing IMO.

That's an interesting question.

I assume all tulpas are separate entities or at least are capable of becoming separate entities (role-playing is a forcing method). As a result, I do my best to treat tulpas with the same respect as if I were speaking to another person.

I think viewing tulpas as a thing in your head, an imaginary friend, or an it can be dehumanizing and can provide the host excuses to not go all the way to give their tulpa the best life possible or abuse them. When Gray thought I was an imaginary friend, he would ignore me or not take what I say seriously because he didn't think of me as a separate person. I found this deeply frustrating, especially because at the time I was trying to talk Gray out of his self-destructive behaviors and I felt scared and confused a lot. However, I'm not sure how many tulpas out there have reported not being respected because they were dehumanized by the language used to describe them. I don't know if this is a unique experience of mine or not.

I'm Ranger, GrayTheCat's cobud (tulpa), and I love hippos! I also like cake and chatting about stuff. I go by Rosalin or Ronan sometimes. You can call me Roz but please don't call me Ron.

My other headmates have their own account now.

My participation in tulpamancy to begin with automatically implies I'm going to respect them as people, regardless of their nature. I feel like to not respect a tulpa "because they're not a real, different person" means you wouldn't even be interested in tulpamancy in the first place.

That said, if my tulpas were actually spirits or some such just stuck in my head, I would feel even worse for not spending time with them or giving them more time to be active.

Hi! I'm Lumi, host of Reisen, Tewi, Flandre and Lucilyn.

Everyone deserves to love and be loved. It's human nature.

My tulpas and I have a Q&A thread, which was the first (and largest) of its kind. Feel free to ask us about tulpamancy stuff there.

Most of my tulpas began as daydream characters. Basically imaginary friends, but I imagined myself in their world rather than them in mine. They had some degree of autonomy back then (and I enjoyed taking a relatively "hands-off" approach), but tulpamancy introduced the belief that their behavior was entirely out of my control, which led to all sorts of dysfunction. I'm not sure the change in my beliefs affected how much I respected them, but it definitely affected how well we got along, and not in a good way.

I come out of hibernation once in a blue moon.

They/them pronouns, please. (I've been using this display name since 2012 and people won't recognize me if I change it.)

To quote Albus Dumbledore: “Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”

It's basically how we both look at it. My tulpa is a part of me, I'm a part of him. Even if he happens to live inside my brain, and I can't physically see him, he's still very much his own person.

Clarifying who I was quoting.

Doc (she/her) = Host

Franklyn (he/him) = Tulpa

The way i think of it is that the tulpas first start out as part of you when their young they are part of you but when they become more developed they will make their own identity and become separate similar to parents having kids in a way.  So we believe that they are separate once they reach a certain point in progress.    I would respect tulpa as much as any other human being or animal.

I had a similar experience to this in the beginning, in that, those that would later become system mates began as "daydream characters." I stopped using them about a month or so before I began tulpamancy, giving my mind some time to "reset", I suppose you could say. After newly creating Esper, I realized that the "daydream characters" or "imaginary friends" were tulpas in all but name. After some deliberation, I decided to slowly make those "characters" into full-fledged tulpas. The main difference here between fennec and I here is that I believed that tulpas ultimately can't do much without the host's approval, coupled with me trying to make amends for my blindness in years past, made a functional system.

Fantastic quote. I feel like guides on "how to make a tulpa" and such should start putting that in there. I agree with Etna entirely here. Another quote you can slap on is, "I think, therefore I am." That statement is purpose made to not be doubted. After all, the only thing you cannot doubt is your own existence. Does this not apply to tulpas? The way I see it, if a tulpa can think enough to question whether or not they exist, they exist, because to be able to think is to be able to exist.

Hey there, the name's Bryan. In system Re:Body(In order of the rainbow):

Sean, Esper, Blinky, Compact, Janey, Kyle, Gwen'd, Gwen, Emily, Rollin, Waynin, Trease, Layy, Justin, Chloe, Zachery, and Elliot.

I've been here a while. Much longer than I thought I'd be. Our system was founded October 2nd, 2018. In early 2020, we decided that due to our systems exponential growth, we'd limit who would be active. Now, every month, we do a check to see who wishes to be in dormancy and who wishes to be active. Currently, for the month of April, 2023, we've got myself(Bryan), Janey(Co-host), Emily, Layy, Chloe, and Esper(sub-rep). After over 2 long years, we can finally switch :)

Bryan is currently swapped in as host, Esper is sub-rep.

Yes! Totally agree!
