Should we have a second LOTPW thread (or something similar)?

There's no problem with LOTPW, it's just a Forum Game thread (that's really just a Lounge thread). It could be extremely active or dead and that wouldn't mean anything. The problem is people posting so much otherwise-relevant-or-interesting stuff there instead of elsewhere on the forum. You go out of your way to talk to new people, and I go out of my way to make people bring their on-topic discussion to actual threads, but unfortunately everyone just ends up posting one post one time and not wanting to make it an actual thread or anything. That's the main problem with LOTPW.

I'm guilty of it too I guess, but my point is - if you think it's just a few select people posting too much in LOTPW, then those are the same people who need to start posting in other places instead of always LOTPW.

We could probably do with some new discussion threads that may discuss things that've been discussed in the past, as long as they're things people would've heckin' discussed again in LOTPW anyway

Hi! I'm Lumi, host of Reisen, Tewi, Flandre and Lucilyn.

My tulpas and I have a Q&A thread, which was the first (and largest) of its kind. Feel free to ask us about tulpamancy stuff there.

Since I posted this thread, my position changed. I think I shifted away from LOTPW because I felt like there wasn't much I could talk about.

I feel like the main topics are video games and anime, neither of which I relate to or can talk about very much. We don't watch anime on our own and we rarely play videogames (if we do it's mostly Gray and it's almost always Nintendo games), neither of which are helpful if you want to chat in LOTPW right now. I found it too easy to drift to Discord and focus most of my attention there, I think different topics come up and there's a bit more variety. It doesn't help that moderation wise, Discord is more demanding and I like the format of Discord better than I do the forums. Tulpamancy very easily drifts off-topic, and Discord is better for that despite being also worse for tulpamancy discussion.

I think the forums are both good and bad for tulpamancy and the same can be said for Discord. The forums are very good for preserving tulpa discussion, especially the gold nugget of tulpa discussion that emerges from casual discussion  every now and then. The downside is discussion is slow and threads can be a bit suffocating because they don't flow naturally. Discord fixes the flow issue, but preservation wise it's terrible. I wish there was a way to convert Discord conversations into threads automatically to try and get the best of both worlds.

At the end of the day though, even the ideal platform doesn't prevent discussion culture splits, migration, and break-ups. I think tulpamancy works best in natural small groups- the same group of regulars share their ideas and socialize. These groups can and sometimes do move independently of the platform, like how a split to the cBox lead to a move to a Discord server, another move to another server, back to the cBox, and then dissipating once the group dissipated. Another LOTPW thread would provide the space for another group- effectively what the tulpa only chat thread acted as for some time. It's also worth mentioning most tulpa communities are small pockets like the cBox group and scattered about on Discord, Tumblr, Telegram, and beyond. I think the only way to grow as a community is to figure out how to preserve small groups while establishing connections. You want some isolation to preserve the groups, but without connections you end up with a fragmented community.

Sure, there was people I recognize, like Bre and Lumi, but many faces, like Darron, Simmie, Yakumo, and some others, were all new faces that were just as ingrained in LOTPW culture as those they seemingly replaced (Cat, Bear, Someone, JGC, etc.).

[Gray] I'm not dead! I just posted not too long ago either!

I'm definitely not as active as I used to be, but I don't know how much more I was posting once Ranger was posting more in general (on second thought, maybe Ranger being more active boosted my activity in LOTPW?)

I still advocate for the addition and implementation of a shoutbox.

Hey there, the name's Bryan. In system Re:Body(In order of the rainbow):

I've been here a while. Much longer than I thought I'd be. Our system was founded October 2nd, 2018. In early 2020, we decided that due to our systems exponential growth, we'd limit who would be active. Now, every month, we do a check to see who wishes to be in dormancy and who wishes to be active. Currently, for the month of April, 2023, we've got myself(Bryan), Janey(Co-host), Emily, Layy, Chloe, and Esper(sub-rep). After over 2 long years, we can finally switch :)

Bryan is currently swapped in as host, Esper is sub-rep.

I am in several completely different forums and all of them have died down in the past 10 years, all activity shifting to off-topic, mostly politics. I've thought about it a long time and still don't know how to fix it. If you block or outsource everything not strictly on topic, the community dies. If you allow everything, every place turns into twitter.

Let's be honest shitposting is much easier than contributing knowledge to a complex topic but I think a key is getting people to collaboratively do something in a community. A survey, art, text, experiments - it doesn't matter. The key is creating something together and feeling part of it.

I agree the current form of LOTPW is not ideal. I mean it's impressive but do we reall need to preserve 10.000 pages and years of mostly meaningless nonsense thats not even funny?

Another suggestion - is it possible to create an auto-pruning chan like thread? For example once the thread exceeds 20 pages the oldest page is automatically deleted. That's not only a privacy improvement, it deters users from posting anything relevant for tulpamancy in this thread - because it will be gone in a short while. Just a thought.

I'm not fond of outsourcing it to other platforms like discord (which I will never use). It just increases fragmentation.

I disagree heavily with this. A big part of LOTPW is its history, and we can't and won't just erase that. Not to mention, context is important. I think threads should maintain their full content because without it, the conversation/discussion is incomplete. That is a severely flawed idea, Yakumo. I honestly don't even know why you would think such a system would work well.

@Yakumo

First of all, no it is not possible to delete posts on a timer on this forum software or probably any. We could manually time deleting threads somehow, but that's impractical and annoying. And anyways, forums are meant to be long-term storage of discussion. Discord is a better place for nonsense chat. LOTPW holds no significance as a place of activity other than possibly being too easy to waste potential topics and on-topic posts in. But that's something we should be able to work out with the regulars of the thread and address manually, no need to do any fancy stuff with it

I agree with the sentiment of your first two paragraphs though

You can set phpBB boards to automatically prune old topics/threads in a forum after X days of inactivity, so I would imagine Invision boards to have the same functionality - it seeming to have more bells and whistles in comparison. 🤷‍♀️

I think I would prefer an archiving system for mothballed threads as opposed to outright deletion. I don't know how gigantic of a task it would be, but maybe threads older than, for example, 5 years that aren't in present day use could be retired to a public archive subforum that can still be viewed to preserve the community's history. If you wanted to revive a retired discussion, you could link the old thread from the archive in the OP and the new thread for discussion with the present day community. Might be an option? 🤷‍♂️

That'd make sense, much more sense then just deleting threads.
