SAO is extremely influential on the isekai genre and nowadays it's pretty much assumed that, if you are talking about isekais, you are talking about SAO inspired isekais. strangely though, SAO inspired isekais almost universally decided to use reincarnation as the method that the protagonist uses to get to the other world, and I don't really know what that was inspired by. I suppose that it probably has to do with the other big difference between SAO and the shows inspired by SAO: in SAO the main goal is to escape from the other world, while in SAO inspired isekais, returning to the original world is not a concern, or at least not a major one. the reason for this change is that you can enjoy the other world a lot more when you aren't trying to escape it. and so this ties into reincarnation because if you were only able to enter a world through reincarnation then that doesn't give any good leads on how to get back to your original world and it can pretty much be assumed that such a task would be impossible (and also, since you are dead, you don't have any more responsibilities to the original world and if anything it would be a bit weird if you came back), and so then it is much easier to justify not being concerned with going back, and the isekai genre is built on making things easy

it's generally some sort of power fantasy where the main character gains special powers by being reincarnated or has useful knowledge from their past life and so from there they are able to do whatever ridiculous thing that the writer wants them to. by this point it's so played out that pointing out how played out it is is played out and so shows are starting to get into really weird and specific concepts, like getting reincarnated as a spider and trying to work out the optimal spider build (yes, this is an actual show that is currently airing)

flip flappers is technically an isekai, but it isn't of the SAO inspired variety and there isn't just one other world, but a whole bunch of them and the characters travel between them and the original world, so it doesn't really follow a lot of the typical isekai tropes (flip flappers likes to make a habit of ticking the minimum amount of boxes that it needs to technically be considered part of a certain genre; it is also technically a magical girl show, but if you started watching it with the idea that you were watching a magical girl show you would not get the experience you expected)

there's only 2 episodes out right now, but I can already tell that Otherside Picnic is something special. it's like flip flappers if instead of being about learning to stand up for yourself and take action, it was about seeing the true nature of reality and going mad from the revelation, which is just about the highest praise that I could possibly give something

Wondering if I should just make it a lounge thread instead... Would serve the same purpose and off-topic would be tolerated there as well...
