My friend who once went to the US said she couldn't practice English at all because it was full of people speaking Spanish to her (Miami)

Spanglish is so much easier to understand for us than Spanish lol, the mexicans in california who are so used to speaking english and spanish basically speak the level of spanish we learned in high school and it's very helpful (still with a bunch of words we don't know ofc, but it's not as hopeless as pure spanish)

but yeah we've heard a few stories of people coming to the US and not getting English practice because they stayed in small communities that just speak their own language

That sounds kinda boring. When you can speak the language it is very fun to challenge yourself but it must be a nightmare to find yourself in a foreigner place surrounded by a language you don't understand. Not like I'd know, I've never been to another country, parents ruined only chance at it

I mean it still has Spanish in it ofc, just like, it's easier to understand what's being said on the fly without consulting a dictionary or something

Hey there, the name's Bryan. In system Re:Body(In order of the rainbow):

Sean, Esper, Blinky, Compact, Janey, Kyle, Gwen'd, Gwen, Emily, Rollin, Waynin, Trease, Layy, Justin, Chloe, Zachery, and Elliot.

I've been here a while. Much longer than I thought I'd be. Our system was founded October 2nd, 2018. In early 2020, we decided that due to our systems exponential growth, we'd limit who would be active. Now, every month, we do a check to see who wishes to be in dormancy and who wishes to be active. Currently, for the month of April, 2023, we've got myself(Bryan), Janey(Co-host), Emily, Layy, Chloe, and Esper(sub-rep). After over 2 long years, we can finally switch :)

Bryan is currently swapped in as host, Esper is sub-rep.

I didn't mean they literally speak high school spanish, I meant they speak just enough that you can try to understand it with what you learned in school

that's not just a 20 word vocabulary sheet either, we learned grammar and stuff too y'know

Good afternoon! 😊

Phil nor I speak any other language but English. Phil did have it set in his mind that he was going to learn Spanish at one point in his life and German at another, but there was no real drive for him to learn either. I do hear Spanish all the time though as there are TONS of hispanic people in New Jersey these days! Learning it would definitely help me be able to communicate with more people, but I don't think Phil has the patience to learn a new language at this point.

The upside of having the dominant language of the planet as your native tongue is that you get to converse in that dominant language by default. The downside is that there is really no incentive to learn any other language, which leads to most English speakers lacking the mind-expanding experience of knowing multiple languages.

spanish isn't interesting to us because it just feels like "English but not English", but it is one of the most useful/relevant languages to learn in the US
