You know... It's exactly what it sounds like. Epic Games, owning both Unreal Engine and Fortnite, have had the popularity and the means to expand the reach of Fortnite into something akin to Roblox, where they can really do whatever they want. And virtual concerts with real pop stars is something they do.

Oh I see! Wow I'm out of touch. 😆 I just thought Fortnight was a kind of a game where one group battles another group. That's cool that you can have concerts in it too, unless I'm horribly misunderstanding things. I gotta imagine you have to turn PvP off for the concerts though. 😆

fortnite is a battle royale so it is every man for himself i think, but i don't know much about it either

 

Also one member left for the concert now. They were able to play for the first hour then had to go

Fortnite technically started (in development) as something like Dungeon Defenders, where you'd set up your defenses and then play defending from zombies. But before it released, they saw the huge success of PUBG (which itself was just an exact copy of another battle royale, and..) and decided to change the format of their game to hop on the battle royale trend. Suffice to say they saw a little bit of success from that.. And at this point it's basically a sandbox of game modes and content, again similar to Roblox

 

My hate for it however comes from the fact that they stole dances for their (paid) emotes, many of which were from Youtubers (including ones I'm subscribed to) that weren't even that popular and would've benefited highly from being credited, let alone paid. But no, because you can't copyright a dance (only a full "choreography"), Fortnite said "Look at these cool dances we made!" and became ridiculously successful with things like the Default Dance (taken from the show Scrubs) going very, very viral with kids

 

So since they played "Scumbag big-company" cards from the start, I've never chosen to see anything else they've done in a positive light either, like putting popular character skins like Goku in the game.

 

At the end of the day they've not done too much else than steal dances though (they have done some things, but whatever), so I try to live and let live with kids playing Fortnite, even if I will never touch it myself

 

For comparison I and many other people recently had to switch from Unity as their game development engine to Unreal (owned by Epic Games), because Unity's management has become so annoyingly profit-based and shown us over the last few years they have very little interest in actually providing a good service/product if they can just focus on more monetization instead. Epic Games will surely go this same route eventually, as all big services do once they think they're too big to fail, but for right now Unreal Engine is just delivering 10x better features and updates to their engine while for the time being maintaining an extremely fair game (developer) pricing system, so while I fully expect this golden era to start to rot some day, my eggs are in the Unreal basket for the foreseeable future

I’m surprised Fortnite is even bouncing back in popularity, but maybe people are playing it postironically. A lot of my peers are jumping on, and they’re pretty good people anyway, so I can’t really see a problem with just casually chipping at it

GTA still being alive is a sight to see. That new 6 trailer coming up in Jan is really bringing the momentum forward

Yeah the Fortnite dance thing does seem very scummy, even I who knows nothing about Fortnite knows about that.

 

I'll just stick to my Civ VI and my occasional dabbles into Minecraft, though usually I'm content just watching Phil play Minecraft rather than play myself. Anyway, I'm off for now, see everyone later! 😁👋
