I physically am incapable of walking slow. Brisk walking is my default walking. But I wanted to try being able to run for long periods of time like others seem to. There is a thing called c5k or c25k, which is a like, tutorial I guess for going from couch to 5k to 25k running. I think it can take most people who are very sedantary and get them running a 5k in 30 minutes in 8 or 9 weeks of training. People seem to describe wellbeing from running everyday for such periods of time to be vastly higher. Also someone said they thought they had adhd and got meds for it, which the meds helped, but then they decided they didn't like the idea of relying on a substance so started exercising vigorously and in time, they could get to the end of their days and feel "wow I got a lot done today" the same way the medication did, and when they don't exercise they immediately notice how much it sucks and said it is like getting new, vastly better headphones, then using your old pair again

Lines up with my experience from 2017ish when I actually did a thing similar to HIIT maybe, but running is also very good for it, and I'd like to exercise for overall an hour a day if I can get there. I'm more motivated than last time I was motivated and didn't do anything. It needs to last long enough for it to be self sustaining from noticing the benefit, because I noticed very little benefit from exercise recently, unlike 2017 when it was noticeable

Spoiler

also I think you can be healthier from diet by going beyond just avoiding sugar. Also I don't mean dieting for weight loss but dieting for wellbeing and healthy body (though weight loss is good too). It's so complicated because it seems different nutrients don't all have the same effect from every source. Like iron from anything that isn't meat is like 1/5th as effective. The effect of different nutrients can vary drastically based on what other things are or aren't consumed along with them, or even by how they are cooked. It seems eggs for instance, the yolk is way healthier to eat raw because cooking it oxidizes it or something, idk the details. Egg whites may be healthier cooked, though, cuz uncooked has some certain kind of protein that does something not so good, idr, though uncooked egg whites may only be noticeably bad if you consume a lot of them in a short time

A vitamin really isn't remotely the same or as good as getting nutrients from food because the context matters a lot. Pregnant women need like 3x as much iron as normal and there are supplements for pregnant women for that but they are often still iron deficient unless they get the iron from food

People were apparently healthier when they commonly ate every part of the animal too, like the organs. Those are more nutrient dense, and people had better teeth. Modern food has caused a lot of people's mouths to not form correctly, due to some mixture of lack of certain nutrients and it often being softer. what a pregnant woman eats also affects how a baby's mouth will form, and whether or not they are breastfed. I also didn't know breasts can apparently detect a baby's saliva content and modify its contents to be what the baby needs at that moment? human were invented by aliens for sure

Too late for that to help me but yeah, ik food affects my wellbeing a lot so I want to wellbeingfromfood maxx, but I am lazy and being unsure doesn't help

There are doctors who say a whole foods plant based diet is by far the healthiest diet any human can have, and then there are doctors who say it is physically impossible to be vegan and also be healthy. So... wtf. It would appear food science has a lot of diametrically contradicting studies, perhaps because there are too many factors to take note of, idk. Genes might also matter, and in some cases it matters massively with certain genetic disorders you could potentially be unaware of

i've read a lot of milk being evil and bad for you and that the idea it was ever good for people was fake news, and then I also recently learned the red cap milk is actually amazing for you (whole fat milk) and that other ones are missing vital things that make it so nice

anyhow idk. i guess i'll experiment. you get anecdotes of people swearing by different diets and condemning others. I do know that the mass majority of vegans give up being vegan due to health issues trying to be vegan caused them, though. But then there are a small number that continue being vegan and will say that those people screwed up being vegan correctly. Others will say it is impossible to get all you need without animal products though and that supplements won't perform the same as getting it from an animal. b12 vitamin isn't going to do what eating a steak will

doesn't look that long but i also typed it on computer. tl;dr wellbeing maxxing with diet is more complex than just avoiding sugar, and supplements don't really work that well, particular when you try to rely almost totally on them. They are better for fixing minor deficits and you still need things from food, but the type of food matters and what you eat with it also matters, and how you eat it. it's a mess

i'll just keep hearing what people say i guess and try different things. what I've learned channel has a lot of info about food, but of course there are other channels that will contradict him. he says he feels great though, and is a meat eater, meanwhile there are tons of vegan channels of people saying veganism made them feel miserable, so I may just see what wil's channel feels like. somehow when he feels bad he is good at determining what was causing it and changing it

Good morning TB. That's great that you exercised.

Was your back in pain from the hard breathing?

How are you?

idk why it hurt the way it did. I wasn't breathing that massively hard though. good morning

i'm okay. i need to get comms done badly, but friend said they want to come over today, so that could diminish that greatly. I need comms done so I can work on tad drawing

I'm working my way towards 800 tabs. I need an intervention

Oh, both very good reasons to run then. Just don't push yourself in-the-moment, health benefits from exercise and working out do not come from hurting yourself, but from doing-a-lot consistently. Like the urge to just keep lifting weights until you hurt yourself because you happen to be motivated at that time - even if you stop before really being hurt, you've benefitted almost not at all compared to stopping at a more reasonable time, and further benefits will only come from continuing to be consistent with that workout/exercise over time

So don't worry at all about stopping running when anything starts to hurt, take some minutes to rest, and then you can go again, and just repeat that until your body has clearly had enough

Then just make sure to come back to it again ... Usually "tomorrow" for cardio, but for your first week or two I would recommend having a rest day or two in between and eating >50g of protein

Anyways, I wasn't saying "all that matters is calories and sugar is bad", I was just saying two very basic facts that don't really conflict with anything. Health and especially diet has untold amounts of misinformation floating around, because the human body is just really complex and everyone is different, so it's generally good to trend towards basics (things like "Eating a variety of nutritious foods" and "Not too much sugar") and be a lot more cautious around complex or gimmicky things, like specific diets (the only one I'm 100% confident in is keto, but I believe there are at least a couple other similar-enough diets that also work - if you really must go for one, make sure you get info about them from multiple credible sources, and not just one person or a gaggle of influencers)

what i've learned channel seems to lean towards keto as they really like to say fat and protein are very good for you and don't seem to like carbs much, but I don't think they've ever said keto diet specifically, but they do also talk about ketosis. I think cooking protein and fat together is not good though, idr the details would have to find what he said again

though yeah, that generally seems good. I do think I feel better with less carbs but carbs are hard to avoid and wil also says like, 80% of food in america has some amount of sugar in it for the purpose of making it addictive, so it is very hard to avoid. fortunately, he lives in japan so it is way easier to eat healthy

if it is true that american bread would be considered cakes in europe, that sucks. I heard that somewhere else

But yeah thanks for encouragement to run. If I keep it up and seem to go relatively far with it, I might buy running shoes. Apparently large amounts of running can be damaging to your body if you don't have proper shoes, but there isn't really a point if you run like less than 10 miles a week, according to r/running

Oh yeah, another common agreement between food enjoyers: processed foods are bad for you

Exactly how bad they say it is seems to vary from person but I've never heard someone say they are good for you. it is somewhere between not good and horrible

Eyeing the bag of corn chips in my lunch box. Huh, *shrug

When exercising there tends to be a boundary some don't really cross when you're tired.

You do get benefits from going to that boundary however there's also more benefits to be had by pushing past that boundary.

I think they call it overloading or overreaching. An example would be increasing your repetitions or increasing the duration of your exercises as time goes by and as your muscles become stronger.

But by all means don't hurt yourself if you feel tendon pain or joint pain.

If it were on Saturday or Sunday I'd go running with you or at the same time you do.

I believe you're thinking high impact exercises versus low impact exercises. High impact exercises  have both feet leave the ground, jumping, running, jumping jacks. versus low impact, which keeps one foot on the ground at all times.

Oh, I never heard of high impact or low impact. I see

Yeah maybe we could run together, but I really don't run log rn. I need to read the c5k guide, I only read some of it where it talked about getting supplies like running shoes

It also said it is very important that you ask your doctor if it would be okay to run to be safe. Even if you think you're healthy, that you should ask them. Like bruh, I really don't feel like asking my doctor if I, a young, only very slightly overweight person in their 20s, with barely any healthy issues besides asthma and acid reflux, if I can run. Is running really that dangerous? People over 65 do it too. I feel like they would laugh at me and question why I'd make a doctors appointment that probably cost insurance hundreds of dollars just to ask that

And I've just gotten around to Kurzgesagt's newest video, about the relation between exercise and weight -

Actually just part one of two, second not out yet, that one will be more about food and how to lose weight, while this one is about exercise and what it does and doesn't do for you

Great timing

Yea TB I could use a good pair of running shoes.

I was just thinking it was something we could do to keep each other motivated. sometimes it helps having someone that's joining you in activity.

Yeah

I haven't watched the video yet but I heard clips of people giving talks about weight loss and saying that exercise actually does absolutely nothing for weight loss

coworker said their doctor told them that you need to have max heart rate for 30 minutes first, then every minute past 30 minutes will result in working towards weight loss, but any exercise before that doesn't contribute

I wonder what kurzgetstatgust says
