Luminesce September 19 Share September 19 (edited) Pokemon is suing Palworld for violating their patents (this is actually pretty rare compared to copyrights and such) I knew if I looked up their "patents" I would just be mad, so I avoided it for most of the day, but saw someone post an excerpt of one that seemed ridiculous, so I did look them up There's surprisingly few according to the site I used, nearly all of them are various forms of saying nobody but them can make a game about tracking and encouraging healthy sleeping habits, but the few relevant ones include aiming and throwing something to "cause a fighter to fight" (or affect a fighter with an item), and literally the concept of riding an object by walking into it and it changing if in the air or touching water The latter of which was somehow written out in 23,000 words of abhorrently repetitive lawyer speak Let me just say that the concept of paying a lawyer a million dollars to legally prevent anyone else from utilizing basic game concepts is the strongest impetus for violent thoughts I've ever felt, only next to something-politically-scummy I can't remember and don't feel like trying to Ironically inversely, my strongest pet peeve (that term may be too light though) is when scummy game developers/companies copy exact ideas so closely that it would actually have been harder than adding the tiniest bit of their own creativity to it, purely out of COMPLETE ignorance of either the art or even the practicality of that design, only in pursuit of money, with frantic fear that the tiniest deviation of this thing they do not understand called "creativity" might cause the entire project to come crumbling down My hatred of copyright (actually usually in relation to blocking sharing & creative usage of music, not games) is a close second But locking basic game design concepts behind million dollar dense legalese (23,000 words in that object-boarding patent btw, using the word "boarding" 596 times) they can throw at you the moment you're successful - I think that's a new low Edited September 19 by Luminesce Hi! Luminesce September 19 Share September 19 (edited) Imagine how Salvador Dali would've felt if he was told, after his painting The Persistence of Memory (the droopy clocks one) became valuable enough, that he had breached the patent of some-clock-brand that disallowed anyone else from creating art focusing on depictions of multiple clocks, and was then sued for it I really feel that-strongly towards game design, it's the art I'm passionate about and have spent an unknowable amount of time thinking (and talking) about my entire life Edited September 19 by Luminesce Hi! ringgggg September 19 Share September 19 What did you think they were going to do when they saw palworld take a shot at their brand? They were going to find a reason at some point lmao D-prime is shrinking as we speak. Luminesce September 19 Share September 19 (edited) I'm not mad they're suing, I'm mad at the absurdity of their (and surely many others') "patents" Namco patented minigames on loading screens and prevented loading screens from being a little more fun for like 15 years Edited September 19 by Luminesce Hi! ringgggg September 19 Share September 19 Really, I never knew. I don’t know how legal action would interpret something that ridiculous. That itself is the loophole I think D-prime is shrinking as we speak. Official LOTPW leaderboard Our imposition progress report

TurboSimmie September 19 Share September 19 Good morning everyone! 😊 The actual three games are Civ VI, the Sims 3, and Minecraft. (Kinda surprised no one said Minecraft because I've played it with most of you 😄) I probably would have enjoyed Civ 4 and 5 but during my existence my host and I haven't gone back to them. (Phil played tons of Civ 3, 4, and 5 in his day) Similarly, I'm sure I would have great memories of the Sims 1 and 2 but I've never gone back, and for whatever reason I never felt the need to try the Sims 4. My host is actually into more games than me and tried to get me into a few that just didn't stick for whatever reason. He really likes Fallout New Vegas but I just couldn't get into it for whatever reason. He's also really into city-builders but I find them a bit un-satisfying. And of course he's really into the 90s platformers he grew up with, especially Sonic, and I'm glad he's having fun but I just can't get into them myself. Also, I tried to get into Hogwarts Legacy, and I think the game looks beautiful but the story is meh and the combat is too confusing for me. I know there's a "story mode" that makes everything easy but I kind of feel there's really no point to it at that point, especially when I'm not into the story. Ultimately I'm pretty much to video games what Lumi is to films, in the "I'm sure they're good but I'm just not interested" way. I never want my non-interest in games to come across like I'm looking down my nose at anyone who plays or enjoys them. 😊 Tulpa Wife & Mother! 💚 💍 11.28.21 👶 4.7.23 👗 Simmie's AI Dress-Up! 📷 Phil and Simmie's Photographic Adventures!
