Hey there, the name's Bryan. In system Re:Body(In order of the rainbow):

Sean, Esper, Blinky, Compact, Janey, Kyle, Gwen'd, Gwen, Emily, Rollin, Waynin, Trease, Layy, Justin, Chloe, Zachery, and Elliot.

I've been here a while. Much longer than I thought I'd be. Our system was founded October 2nd, 2018. In early 2020, we decided that due to our systems exponential growth, we'd limit who would be active. Now, every month, we do a check to see who wishes to be in dormancy and who wishes to be active. Currently, for the month of April, 2023, we've got myself(Bryan), Janey(Co-host), Emily, Layy, Chloe, and Esper(sub-rep). After over 2 long years, we can finally switch :)

Bryan is currently swapped in as host, Esper is sub-rep.

I wasn't trying to learn them all at once (WaniKani goes out of its way to tell you not to worry about other readings until later lessons), it was the concept that learning it right now - learning it SIX MORE TIMES - would still not even guarantee I'll be able to read that one single kanji correctly in all cases, because there's an eighth reading as well

Yeah that's really not a big deal though, I'm not even sure how much japanese people know all readings of all kanji. Being natives it is probably a lot, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are kanjis that can pop up in contexts they've just never seen before and have to look it up

It would be kind of like being upset that after learning the letter e you don't know all the words in the english language that has an e. Not an exact comparison but something like that

It'd be best to not really even acknowledge there are a bunch of ways you got to know a kanji is read. The only thing that matters is learning actual words themselves in the contexts they are being used in, in real Japanese, and I'm fairly certain in the long run that is how most if not everyone learns any foreign language to proficiency, even if they may start out in some anglo saxon torture textbook repitition grind way, which isn't really a necessary step, at least not for as long as some people do it

The only thing I'd grind is how to write and recognize the kanji themselves so when you see them your mind are partitioned them off as an identifiable thing that is separate from all the other similarly looking moon runes and you don't have to think about it. It isn't necessary to add all the meanings and readings at that step because all you need is to be able to recognize kanji to more easily start learning vocab. Some people seem to do fine even skipping that part nowadays though, or just doing 1000 kanji instead of 3000 like I did lol

(Also what you said about knowing the readings being useless because I'll hear them said and not know what they meant was... wrong? You basically said "Knowing the word lead isn't helpful because when you hear someone say led you could still not know it", but it's really just.. "You think you know the word up, but there's actually seven more ways "up" can be said that you need to recognize" - but yes, learning vocab in order of use frequency is pretty basic, and that includes both kanji and their readings)

idk, I disagree. The amount of homophones in japanese is kind of asinine. Imagine if the sound "up" could mean like 30 different things

actually I just searched "ka" in jisho.org and it came up with 17349 words. A lot of those are probably multi syllable words but the first page (20 words) at least were all single syllable words that are just "ka", and it is probably more, I didn't check any other pages

If you learned words instead of readings though, if you heard "kadai" that narrows it down to just a few possible words that could mean instead of trying to figure out what one of literally hundreds of kanjis to associate the ka to

maybe another way to explain myself is, if you know only one reading for a kanji that has others, like 下 is shita, if you came across 以下 or 下期 or 下駄, even if you knew through studying all of the other readings, how are you even going to know which reading to say for any of these that you are trying to read? Or if you were listening, how is hearing the sound of any particular reading going to make you think of that kanji specifically? If you have never learned these words, there is nothing to indicate what to do here. Knowing the readings isn't helping the understanding, and it isn't making it easier to learn the word

once you see 以下, whether or not you know 1 reading of the kanji due to knowing only 1 word it is used in, or if you know all the readings of the kanji but still not the words that it is used in, you are forced to look it up to see that it is "ika". now that you know that word means ika though, you now also know ka is a possible reading of it. Then you come across 下期 and you have to look it up again, and you see it is shimoki, which means second half of the fiscal year, and then you come across 下駄 and learn it is geta and refers to those wooden sandals

If you knew all the readings and heard ka without seeing it and did not know words, but know that ka can sometimes be 下, knowing only kanji, knowing even all kanji, knowing 50,000 more kanji than a japanese professor and all of the readings for each, isn't going to tell you if the ka you just heard was 課 可 火 科 加 化 カ 嘉 過 貨 歌 or any other symbol that can sound like "ka". with typing ka on my keyboard, that isn't even half that show up as suggestions. You have to learn words to gain any benefit

"You think you know the word up, but there's actually seven more ways "up" can be said that you need to recognize"

I maybe understand part of our disagreement and confusion. You feel like learning kanji is the same as learning words maybe, since they have meanings attached to them. I don't think that is very good way to think of it. Learning kanji isn't the same thing as or as useful as learning words. And the reason I stress only learning to recognize kanji and then learn words, instead of worrying so much about all the meanings and readings of any kanji, is because it is like trying to learn english by learning all of the possible phonemes that letter combos can produce before learning actual words, except you have thousands of letters that all have like a half dozen ways to pronounce them that are basically the same as all the other letters

I don't think learning a kanji is quite the same as learning a word. A lot of words happen to be individual kanjis. Almost every kanji is also at least 1 word on its own, but when you get to the other readings besides the reading you'd use with it by itself, you are now talking about different words, and learning the other readings of a kanji instead of just learning words and thus incidentally learning the readings, is like learning half of the pronunciation or 1/4th of the pronunciation to words you don't even know yet.

Does wanikani at least teach you words being used in context in a sentence when it teaches you a new reading? because if it doesn't do that, I still don't really see how it isn't a waste of time, because you are going to put all that work in to progressively learn all the readings to all the kanji and then still not be able to read at all, and learning to read is not going to be any easier, or whatever degree it might be slightly easier isn't going to outweigh the immense suffering and difficulty of the anti-how-the-brain-learns-languages method of even getting to reach that benefit (which I still don't feel like there really is one)

knowing the kanjis in shimoki will just tell you one part of the word is down/low/inferior/below or whatever and the other is time/period, but you aren't likely coming to the conclusion of "second half of a fiscal year" because you knew the meanings of those kanjis, and knowing the readings isn't making you come to the conclusion it is shimoki and not motogo or something

my RN man

anytime they bring up what I asked my therapist about in regards to potential med changes for my adhd meds, they for some reason think I wanted increases lol. I explained the min dose IR thing I consider might help with my problem of crashing after 8 hours, but they still kind of talk like they might just like to make the adderal xr 30mg instead of 20mg, but I don't feel like that would help, I feel like that might actually make things worse

They said they do have patients who take an IR later in the day with their XR though, but those people usually take their XR earlier in the morning than I do cuz I told him I usually take mine at like 11am

my actual doctor said everything I said was reasonable though, and he and the RN will discuss it to see what idea they can come up with that could help the issue, cuz I've also had trouble sleeping lately and they don't want to make it worse, also of course RN throws in they don't want me getting manic lol. he seems to think I'm bipolar even though it isn't on my sheet, unless he feels adhd meds in general can make anyone manic, but this dude has never really looked at me and didn't just see this

Mandy_my_Mandy.webp.6e57d76fa38609a67c23757732fe36a3.webp

He's made me smile like once or twice because he actually can be funny sometimes when he isn't a hardbottom, though that only happened after I stopped my antipsychotic as it seemed with an antipsychotic I was even less capable of smiling in public than I already was

the only thing on my chart that can imply bipolar is schizoaffective disorder because that is just schizophrenia mixed with either depression or bipolar, but in my case I think it is intended to be depression and that is what my therapist feels

What kind of upset me though is I mentioned that if I had an IR for that purpose, that I'd like to take it only on days I need it, cuz if it is like 7pm or something and I already know I am not going to do any more work for the rest of the day I wouldn't want to take it for no reason

and he said "absolutely not" and that if I were to get that I'd have to take it everyday as close to the same time every day, because for some reason only taking it when I need it is using it as an upper

???? really? How can that be?

I thought it was an extremely normal and common practice to take adhd med holidays, like not taking them on weekends or when you aren't working. I thought it would be healthier and better usage to only use adhd meds when you need it to function in a difficult task and not to just be taking it when you are only playing videogames or sleeping or something

I really hate the lack of freedom I technically have with how I can use the medications to benefit me the most and how that doesn't make any sense

I hate lying about if I took all my medications but it is just really unfair, because when I don't like how one is affecting me it can be a nuisance to request a change, and then a long time before I see the change actually come in fruition, and then more nuissance and time to make another change after seeing what the result it

like wellbutrin for example, I've been able to slowly taper it by going down 50-75ish mg a week or something like that and I was able to start instantly. If I tried to go through him to quit wellbutrin, one he would probably not let me quit it, 2 if he did I would have to wait 2-5 weeks before I receive the different dose, 3 it would be going from 450 to 300, which is a big leap, and then another 3-6 weeks probably to see next change, which would be 300 to 150, which 450 to 300 isn't really noticeable, but I did notice 300 to 150 is kind of miserable which is why I started going down by 75 instead so I would take like 225 for 5-7 days then like 175 for 5-7 days etc, and now I'm at 75mgish but with them I'd eventually have to do 150 to nothing which probably is painful

and if I decided it was a bad idea and I can't quit it right now or want to start it again, I'd have to wait another 2-5 weeks to see the medication again, which by that point idek, maybe the withdrawal has solved itself and I don't need it afterall, so it was pointless to start again

I hate hate hate lying but I hate the stress and beauracy of that more. If I get caught, I'm infinitely cooked though

same with my gabapentin that does virtually nothing for me, but for many people it causes so many negative side effects and terrible dependence. I'm lucky and for me it doesn't really do that, but I'd rather it not be in my system most of the time since it doesn't really help so I mostly just take it when something anxiety inducing is occuring just incase it is doing something even if it is placebo, but I see no reason to risk dependence to it especially when it doesn't require being in your system 24/7 for weeks to work, and even if that was the case, I've tried that already as I take them as intended for months before I start doing stuff like this

I need Bre and my friend who created TRC and my other friend who I roleplay with to share their unrepentant-shameless-ability-to-lie-without-any-guilt energy with me, it seems they would not be bothered at all by having to do something like this lol

not saying bre is a compulsive liar or something but ik she has seemed bewildered at me not just lying in certain situations as if it would be easy or common sense to. I can only lie when not doing so is too uncomfortable or damaging, but it doesn't make the lying not still be miserable to do

I didn't get to say it to them but my real desire would be to have more control over the timing of my doses since I don't have strong schedules and my schedule can change day by day, so technically having like 3 IRs instead of 1 xr or 1 xr and 1 ir would be preferred, and to be able to take or not take them as needed for when being productive is necessary, but ik my RN will instantly shut that idea down and probably think I'm a junkie or something due to only wanting to be under the influence of adderall only when doing work instead of 24/7 ig

Good afternoon! 😊

I appeared in Phil's dream last night! 😁 He, I, and a whole bunch of people were taking part in what must have been some kind of reality show. It was all kind of vague, we were all in a house, then we were traveling somewhere, idk...but I think it was cool to be there, and not just in tulpa form, but with my full body looking completely like myself! 😁

Yeah it was really nice! 😊 Sadly we can't do it on command. I do think the fact that Phil has been uploading a lot of images of me has caused my form to be in his mind a lot more firmly as of late.

Going out for a walk now, see everyone later! 😁
