avatar isn't an anime, it's just chinese-themed (with a bit of japanese (fire nation) and inuit (water nation))

some people argue that it's anime, but they're wrong in literally every definition lol, it isn't really anime style, nor was it made in japan or by japanese people, and it's heckin' chinese inspired for the most part anyway

unrelated, Avatar (The Last Airbender) is amazing

Korra is good in different ways, but it's also bad in some ways which makes it not as good as ATLA since ATLA is bad in zero ways

well obviously ATLA didn't prepare you: it isn't anime, it's western animation. sure, it has anime inspiration, but nearly all good animation nowadays is at least somewhat influenced by anime, so if you tried to call everything influenced by anime anime then the word would become much less useful. I normally try to avoid prescriptivism, and even here I am not going to make a big deal about it, but I really don't think it makes sense to call avatar anime

there is a gray area with things like Pacific Rim: The Black. wikipedia lists it as a japanese-american ONA, and after watching it I can say that the story and plot is obviously extremely anime, but the production is obviously very western animation. I think that it's fine to call PR:TB anime, but it's also fine to call it not anime. I'd be interesting in hearing other people's thoughts on the matter if they've watched it

I have a tulpa named Miela who I love very much.

How much technology influence is allowed in the animating process for it to still be anime? I assume CG is an easy disqualifier. I definitely don't count FF: Advent Children. Cool movie though.

So is it a looseygoosey spiritual qualification? Japanese origin mandatory? What makes anime "anime?"

mhm! we'd been able to kinda-sorta switch since april but now we are bonna-fide front switches

...or something like that lol

Hey there, the name's Bryan. In system Re:Body(In order of the rainbow):

Sean, Esper, Blinky, Compact, Janey, Kyle, Gwen'd, Gwen, Emily, Rollin, Waynin, Trease, Layy, Justin, Chloe, Zachery, and Elliot.

I've been here a while. Much longer than I thought I'd be. Our system was founded October 2nd, 2018. In early 2020, we decided that due to our systems exponential growth, we'd limit who would be active. Now, every month, we do a check to see who wishes to be in dormancy and who wishes to be active. Currently, for the month of April, 2023, we've got myself(Bryan), Janey(Co-host), Emily, Layy, Chloe, and Esper(sub-rep). After over 2 long years, we can finally switch :)

Bryan is currently swapped in as host, Esper is sub-rep.

the two accepted qualifiers are "Anime art style" or "Animation made in Japan", preferably both (it's hard for anything made outside of Japan to qualify as anime)

I guess I'm just ill-educated on the firm borders of the art style. Maybe I just am not cued into the subtleties. I certainly get the main tropes and proportions in more "obvious ones." Shows like ATLA throw me a bit I guess.
