Visualization is not necessarily mandatory, at least not during the beginning stages. I let my tulpa choose her form as well, and while she was still finding out what she wanted to look like, she was simply a mindvoice. Then one day she says "Can I be a rabbit?", and so I look online at pictures of bunnies and anthropomorphic rabbits, and she chose one as a base line then kinda started changing it little by little. Basically what I'm saying is wait until your tulpa is vocal enough to tell you what they want to look like, meanwhile you can work on their voice and hearing them better. ^^

I let Markus choose her form once she was ready. I gave her the form that I thought that she'd look like when I made her and told her that she was free to change it whenever she was ready. One day, her form just changed and she was like "This is me now." Now she changes her appearance pretty regularly :P

Markus is the tulpa, and I don't really have anything else to say.
