Okay that may not have been a great title but I'm too tired to figure out how to word this.

One of my headmates, Xay, seems to be having a lot of trouble talking. But the thing is, when I talk to him, it feels a lot like he's saying things that I can't hear. As in, he says them, I get the general idea as a feeling or a concept, but I can't hear his words, either as a full thought or in his voice or anything.

For example;

"Do you even talk?" (Because I was wondering if maybe his whole Demon thing made him more comfortable nonverbal)

Sometimes/Maybe/Sort of. (As in, "I don't have a clear answer to this/I can explain it to you".)

Is this normal? Is this just part of learning vocalization? Is he just Weird Like That? If it isn't a problem I'm not worried but I don't know if it's a problem or not.

CV is looking at me right now because this is basically his experience lol. He's adamant that it's a hearing problem on my part (which makes sense, given historically we've been able to hear him fine). I'm fairly certain you're describing tulpish (the thoughts/feelings part), which is, to my knowledge, something that most people hear before their tulpas start actually talking.

If you don't find it to be a problem, I'd say it's not. For me, CV's voice issue is a problem because it causes me stress.

And of course, the mandatory "normal is subjective". Brains are weird, systems are weird.

Plural. I'm a bit of an anomaly here.

It sounds like a form of tulpish, very common and some headmates just use this, they are nonverbal. However, since you can communicate, it's not a problem.

This could be a phase lasting only a week or simply his  preferred communication method.

Some headmates go through this as a stage of development, we knew at least two systems where one or all headmates used this as their method of communication permanently.

One thing you could do is exactly what you did here, attempt to translate. With enough practice, that becomes automatic. It's an unnecessary step but if you want to you can and vocality with words will be the eventual result.

Not a problem, don't worry about it. Tulpish is way more efficient. We like words but we also sometimes use tulpish because it's more nuanced information. It's like knowing a second language and some concepts are easier to communicate in one vs the other.
