NewTulpaMom December 22, 2014 December 22, 2014 Hello, I'm new to the forum and to tulpas. I have been reading on the forum for a few days and just started forcing my first tulpa, Alice, yesterday. My question may not really be much concern until further down the road. I am mainly working on her personality and, other than an orb, her form is taking a backseat. This probably won't become an issue until she starts being sentient. I'm mainly wondering if it is likely to be an issue. I am legally blind and have far less sense of smell than vision. I can see well enough to mentally visualize form (except I'm not a great visualizer), but attributing a smell to her is pretty much out of the question. I'm just wondering what, if any, pitfalls or things to bear in mind there might be as she develops, owing to my impaired senses?
Faemon December 22, 2014 December 22, 2014 I would think that your impaired senses don't necessarily hinder your access to reality: you just have your own experience and way to relate to the world through that. As Alice would be a construct within this experience, I wouldn't consider her development being hindered within the limits of your sensory experience, because it's that experience that Alice would fill the shoes of so to speak. That's just my opinion, though. Now that you mention it, my physical sense of smell is all right, but none of my tulpas have a distinctive aroma. I never noticed before, though, so I don't miss it. I'm also blind without my glasses, although, because tulpas are a product of my mind, I can "see" them clearly enough because I'm seeing them with my mind's eye rather than my eyes. There are also some other senses, I believe, that are very internal--almost like how you "just know" situations or the characters of people in dreams, is also how I sense the presence/proximity of my tulpas even if I can't translate that to actual physical senses.
Dylan December 22, 2014 December 22, 2014 Pretty much what Faemon said. Alice will be a product of your unique perceptions of the world, the same as every other tulpa. She won't be any less 'valid' becuase of your impared senses any more than your perception of the world is. The only pitfall I can see if if you try and work against that and try and make a 'normal' tulpa. Work with how you see the world, not how you think others do. If that means Alice doesn't have a scent or particularly vivid physical form, then that's okay. Concentrate on what you're familiar with, how you perceive other people. Concentrate on her texture, her voice, her taste, her aura, her 'feel', however it is you want to perceive her.
sushi December 22, 2014 December 22, 2014 To add to what the others have said, there are many people who choose not to give their tulpas forms at all. You can do that, or perhaps give her a voice and an invisible form if you so desire. Another alternative is to work on your visualization. I've heard of a sighted man who went blind, and wasn't satisfied with it. He visualized absolutely everything, until the visualizations became as vivid as his sight had been -- basically visual imposition of everything. There are a few people here who have used imposition to improve poor vision. It won't help you pass an eye exam, but it will allow you to see things clearly when you know what they look like, or can make a pretty good guess. I'm interested in you though. Most of this community is pretty young, but you're of my generation. What brought you to tulpas? "Some things have to be believed to be seen." - Ralph Hodgson

NewTulpaMom December 23, 2014 Author December 23, 2014 Thanks all. I just wondered if there was anything I'd need to watch out for. Seems I read somewhere that it is highly recommended to assign a scent to one's tulpa. Well, I wouldn't exactly benefit from that. Alice could show up smelling like she'd just been sprayed by a skunk and if likely be none the wiser. As for what got me interested in tulpas...well, the other day I was googling about how to improve mental visualization skills. I came across someone basically asking the same thing, only in relation to creating a tulpa. Maybe it was here, not sure. Just something I found googling. So of course I had to know what a tulpa is, right? So t googled. Got to reading and thought "hey, this sounds neat". So, here I am! Just a slight bit of Alice trivia if anyone is interested. As I was reading, I came across this concept of the wonderland. Not sure if I will do a wonderland or not, but that's when the name Alice popped into my head. If I do a wonderland, well I'll have Alice in Wonderland. Not basing her off the actual character, but thought it would be a nice pun.

(And in case it's relevant, I have a tulpa called Alice, but he's a he :) )
NewTulpaMom December 23, 2014 Author December 23, 2014 Interesting! I can't say as I've ever heard Alice being used as a male name before.
Dylan December 24, 2014 December 24, 2014 Another one of my tulpas named him. She thought it was funny. Joke's on her, though. She now loves him very, very much. :)
