could I ask you how you practice visual imposition?

Of course. We're mostly following the method outlined in this guide. It's basically alternating your focus between visualizing/daydreaming and using your actual senses. When we do it right, it feels like our visualization leaves a faint afterimage on our actual vision.

February 2026

We made more progress with touch imposition this month. We can now consistently produce tingling and light pressure on our hands, shoulders, and back. The hands aren't surprising given that we played around with that in the past. When Bee and I were first learning possession, we used imposed tingling sensations to signal that I was taking control of our hands. Bee and Calliope also focused on our hands when they practiced imposition together. We've been more consistent now, working as a full group, than they were back then.

A few experiences stood out. Bee was able to feel me rubbing their back and shoulders after a long day. The imposed sensations accurately corresponded to the movement of my hand. On another occasion, Bee felt pressure over their entire back from Cal laying on top of them. We also found that imposing one of us rubbing our scalp helps with relieving tension headaches :D

We don't feel we made much progress with visual imposition of our forms. We got a bit better at the practice orb. At times we could see some faint hints of its blue color. I suspect we're finding our forms more difficult because they're more complex. It might help to focus on further sharpening our visualization.

With scent, we feel as if we're on the border between vivid imagination and actual imposition. It's as if we can feel the imagined scent in our nostrils, but not actually smell it. It tickles our nose. Once, the sensation was so strong it made us sneeze!

That's so cool how much progress you'll are making! 🤩 That's super cool how you can help Bee with her headaches! 😊

Thank you very much :) We'll be keeping an eye on your progress report too. I wish you and Nightfall the best of luck with imposition!

March 2026

Unfortunately, this was a very low-energy month for us, so we didn't do a whole lot of imposition practice. Touch is still the area where we're having the most success. As long as we focus, I can feel tingling wherever my headmates touch me. It's cool, but I would love if the sensations felt more solid/realistic.

I think focusing on sensations of pressure and temperature would be best for improving that particular area. We can sometimes do pressure, but not as consistently as the tingling sensation. Temperature seems to only happen spontaneously, we can't control it at all at this point. We did have one awesome moment where I was imagining myself sitting in Tea’s lap while we got settled in to meditate, and I felt warmth all over my back like I was actually leaning against him!

We didn't really make any progress with our other senses, but we had a few other moments of spontaneous imposition. I find it interesting that they tend to happen in moments that make sense in context. For example, I felt Lenore tap me on the shoulder when she was trying to get my attention. At another point, I got distracted while I was singing Calliope a goofy little song in my head. A minute later, I actually heard Cal say, “hey,” clear as day, trying to get my attention back!

I also feel like I'm having more moments where I think I see a person out of the corner of my eye, but when I turn, nobody's there. This isn't totally unusual for me, but normally it happens in situations where I have to be particularly vigilant, e.g. walking alone in the woods. It makes sense, my brain is on high alert, so it jumps to conclusions over any movement in my peripheral vision. I feel like lately it's happening more often in mundane situations. We've started attributing these occurrences to Lenore, since she's the most normal-person-sized tulpa I have. We're wondering if building up that association might help with visual imposition. (I have no idea, we’re just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks lol)

Overthought about saying thank you, so now is a good time to say it. Thank you, we really appreciate it! 😊

Aww, that's unfortunate. I'm glad touch imposition is going well! 😊

April 2026

We had a weird experience while meditating that seems to have caused a significant improvement to our visual imposition ability!

For context, part of our usual process for settling our mind when meditating is counting ten breaths. By the time we get to this point, we're usually pretty relaxed, so it's not uncommon for us to start seeing closed-eye visuals (CEVs), like faint blobs of random color. When thoughts cross our mind, the CEVs will sometimes form a relevant image. Up to this point, our control over this process was pretty limited. (I explain a little more in this post, and I also recommend checking out the wiki page for CEVs!)

About a week ago, I was counting breaths, and when I reached four, a perfect 4 appeared in my vision — literally the clearest CEV image I have ever had. It was still very dim, as my waking CEVs always are, but crisply defined. I kept counting and breathing and watched the numbers appear in succession, all the way up to 10. I even went back and tried 1-3, just to confirm I could actually control the visuals.

This experience left us with many questions. Was it something we could do again on command? Could we do it with our eyes open? And most importantly, could I create images of my tulpas?

We haven't had a ton of time to experiment, but so far it seems the answer to all of these questions is yes! I was able to replicate the experience in later meditation sessions with numbers, letters, and simple shapes. It seems to be pretty easy to get CEVs of basic symbols, but more complex shapes are definitely more difficult. I even found it harder to make 12 appear than 10 or 11.

When I try to see my headmates, the best visuals I can get are kinda like silhouettes with fuzzy impressions of details. It's hard to describe, I'm definitely not seeing a full cohesive image, but certain features will stand out more clearly. I'll be able to tell where eyes or horns are on the head-shaped blob, things like that.

The truly crazy thing is that I've been able to get results with my eyes open! I stare and relax my eyes until I become aware of visual snow, and after that the process is the same as with CEVs. I just have to think of the image I want to see, and it will form in the visual snow like a faint, shadowy ghost. I've already noticed improvement in the quality of my imposition attempts from this. We get the best results in low lighting while staring at textured surfaces.

I don't want to oversell the quality of the images I'm seeing. They are faint and fleeting, quickly fading away or morphing into something else. They are undeniably there, though, and they prove to me that I actually can make myself see things that aren't physically present.

Spoiler

Lenore was losing it over the fact this all started with me seeing the number 4. She's convinced 4 is like our magic lucky number, and it's tough to argue with her when stuff like this happens lol.

Call me John Nash the way I'm going schizo over numbers

One other little anecdote from this month:

We don't practice memory separation, or have any desire to develop it, but we've noticed memories seem just a little easier to recall for the person who was switched in at the time. This month was the first time I totally forgot about something Athelas did while fronting until he referenced it! We thought that was kinda interesting.
