Projecting art in the real space

This exact question has been asked before but I couldn't find the thread.

 

Is it possible, with trained imagination, to project a flat, imagined picture in the real space so that you could copy it ("draw over") and create good art? Has anyone ever done this?

I haven't looked at the thread but I seem to recall someone doing it with quite a bit of practice.
