Pleeb May 11, 2012 May 11, 2012 I'm sure you guys may have noticed the downtime. Apparently out of the 15 servers that invisionfree has, number 13 (the one the forum is hosted on) was offline for awhile. With that being said, I'm going to try to find a new host. Not just because of the forum, but because of the website. As it stands, www.tulpa.info is ran on my own server, and while that server is reliable (It's been running for about a year without a single crash), if I were to lose my internet or my power go out, the site would go down. I could invest in a dedicated host, and the forum and the site would run on that host. The downside is that it would cost me, though I have found one that seems reliable and that I can afford. This brings me to what software to use. I'm still looking at software, but I might be able to get away with mwForum. Here is an example of that forum software being used. It looks very clean, minimalistic, and uses Perl over PHP -- just the way I like it. The second option, would be to use Simple Machine Forums. I have a great deal of experience with SMF, but it's a lot bigger and can be slower (and costly) with a large load. However, I think with our small community, we should be okay if we went that route, esp considering SFM has more features, permissions, and skins. Anyway, just leave your comments/suggestions on this. Spoiler An image in a signature behind a hidden tag!
ThatOneGuy May 11, 2012 May 11, 2012 Ah, good ol' SMF. My favorite feature in SMF is honestly the unread replies option. Instead of scouring through new posts, one can just check if the threads that they've posted in have been updated. Anyways, all for SMF. Orange juice helps with concentration headaches.
FAQ man May 11, 2012 May 11, 2012 The one other forum I've ever joined in the last couple years ran on simple machine, and that shit crashed and wouldn't load on the regular. It makes me squemish.
recansspunners May 11, 2012 May 11, 2012 Last forum I ran and maintained was SMF. Only issue was that if you didn't want to use the default layout AND wanted to use plug-in extras, it required more work than typically reasonable. ちぇえええええええええええええええええええええええええええええ~ん!
Pleeb May 11, 2012 Author May 11, 2012 I had that feeling. The forum is going down anyway, so don't worry about it. Once the new system is up, we'll have a more organized system (with proper user management, disciplinary measures, etc). Anyway, I may be just going with the latest SMF, since that's the easiest to convert the current database from. Otherwise, I'm also looking at MyBB. Pleeb May 11, 2012 Author May 11, 2012 Anyway to save the existing discussions? I'm pretty sure we can, at least with SMF. Spoiler An image in a signature behind a hidden tag!
