Isolation is definitely difficult and dangerous especially for not stable. Even the intelligent and motivated people have problems. It's one of the main concern for space exploration. (Even now astronauts on a long time mission have serious problems)

But for a stable person with preparation and aim it was always the ultimate means.

I myself find that limited isolation enhances the relation with my tulpa. We communicate better, we see each other better, we have more fun. But for sure on a long term we'll run both crazy - me and my tulpa. Perhaps from too much fun ... Completely Spirited away ... Kanzen ni kamikakushi :)

I agree with rtsvet here. I mean isolation is not for everybody, but I don't think it's harmful if a person can handle it. I wouldn't mind giving it a shot myself, as I've had the most progress while isolating myself from distractions, either in media deprivation or doing a ten-day vow of silence meditation retreat. But yeah, not everybody can handle it, and those that can should know their limits.

I've found isolation to help me to an extent. Some of my best narration sessions were ones where I set myself out in the forest for long hikes, just me, Chess, and the woods. One time I took myself out in the middle of a state forest, pitched a tent, and just spent three days out there. However, the tent was broken, there were rednecks with shotguns, and way, way, way too many ticks. It was just Chess and I, but the impending doom served as a distraction.

Now, something that this reminds me of are the Native American spirit animals. A native American would go out into the wilderness (they called it a vision quest) to discover their spirit animal. Said spirit animal would reveal itself to them in a vision, lead them home, and be with them through their lives. Of course, this sounds very similar to something like a tulpa.

Definitely see the similarity with spirit animals and vision quests. I lived in a commune for a while, and attended a few shamanic drum journey workshops there. Very similar to wonderlands. One of my friends actually did a vision quest, though he never shared his experience with me.

The thing I've always wanted to try is a dark retreat -- also a Tibetan practice. You just spend a set amount of time alone in perfect darkness. Unfortunately, with my girlfriend around, I don't have the freedom to explore things like this.
