Anyone have a source or two to back up "guided hypnosis" as a legitimate thing, and not complete pseudo-psychological bullshit? I already have trouble believing hypnosis is anything but a roundabout form of suggestion, let alone guided meditation over a a microphone. I'm sure it'd be beneficial to the academic community following us as well, because this thread sure as hell isn't helping us prove our point of being scientifically accurate.

Hypnosis is generally regarded as a real thing. I'm not sure what it is that you are asking for here.

It's basically putting the brain into debug mode, where the hypnotist has control over the inputs. It is an autonomous response of the 'confused' brain to be more accepting of authority and suggestions.

The irony of asking for such a thing on the tulpa forums of all things, notwithstanding. :P

I didn't realize hypnosis was something that we were questioning here. Its validity has been pretty thoroughly proven to the satisfaction of the academic community, and it can probably be induced with any sensory input, if the hypnotist knows how to use that sense. I don't understand why this is something we would be questioning.

The idea of putting someone into hypnosis through a microphone is ambitious at best. Although hypnosis has been used clinically(albeit with quite a bit of resistance), it's always done by a doctor with a degree in clinical therapy or psychology. To call yourself a hypnotist with no formal degrees is like deeming yourself a UFO expert. I honestly doubt it's anything more than a massive placebo affect, and suffice it to say, I wouldn't categorize guided hypnosis any higher in legitimacy than homeopathy or spirit healing.

I find your use of the word 'always' interesting, considering how well stage hypnosis can be done without anything approaching a degree.

Plus, hypnosis can be done without one's eyes being open. That being so, I fail to see how it matters whether the hypnotist is a foot or a thousand miles away.

You're really overestimating how easy it is to put someone in a hypnotic trance. You'll find that originally all hypnotists would do is talk subjects into a deep state of relaxation by progressively relaxing their muscles, getting them to take deep breaths, etc. Honestly I don't think that you're going even listen to what I just said so why don't you go out there on the internet or go down to your local library and do some reading? It's a fascinating subject.

Hypnosis through a microphone is more difficult, mostly because it is more difficult to see certain aspects of the other person that would indicate the deepness of trance (eye movements, subtleties in breathing, etc)

To call yourself a hypnotist with no formal degrees is like deeming yourself a UFO expert

Which is why I was so concerned about putting the responsibility on myself.

It's not that it's impossible--it's not that hard to do. All it is is suggestion, it's done every day through advertising, sales, etc. Most people have a fucked up view on what it is. A hypnotist has NO POWER over the person they are hypnotizing. All hypnosis is technically self hypnosis as all hypnosis is--is accepting a suggestion. But most people are going to more easily believes an outside source. By the time you've thought about something you deem a lie, you've doubted it.

And a massive placebo effect is hypnosis. That's all it is. There is no trick to it.

But without formal training, the person might not respect you as much. Some people cannot be hypnotized by female hypnotists because they do not respect women. Some cannot be hypnotized by a stage hypnotist because they think it's bullshit. Some cannot be hypnotized because they have been told they cannot be hypnotized. Some people can't be hypnotized because they are too damned excited and keep doing reality checks.

Hypnosis=meditation+being in a state that more readily makes you accept things as truth. Classes in hypnosis will teach you certain patterns the mind accepts easily due to repetition in real life. Going down a set of stairs is easily imagined and can be related to other things very easily. Each step makes you calmer, each breath makes you feel more relaxed, etc. Much easier than "I want you to just clear your mind of everything and anything....done yet?" Or other things people think hypnotize you. The watch swinging, the twisty spiral, all bullshit. But it's bullshit people believe.

Honestly LucidAcid, you gave the best description of hypnosis ever. It's a placebo affect, but that's what we want.

Also, give me a little bit on the files, I had to redownload all the files, go to work, and then go to a dentist appointment.

Using a shitty 128kbps microphone playing through an equally shitty 128kbps set of earphones are going to make a massive difference than if done by a person sitting right in front of you from the fact that a "hypnotist" would be able to physically interact with you.

Your use of the word "hypnotist" is so loose that anyone could be a hypnotist. In fact, although I have absolutely no experience in any form of therapy, psychology, or social sciences and my degree is in an entirely separate field of study, I'm now a hypnotist. I'm hereby certified to hypnotize anyone as long as they're willing to pay a small fee.
