Salutations! I've been reading this forums for a few months, but this is my first post. If another thread already addresses this issue, a link there would be appreciated. Although I have felt fascinated by the discussions on this site, I have felt little desire to become a tulpamancer myself. I have changed my mind now. The reason is the reports of tulpas aiding in pain management which I find to be a very possible treatment for my wife's chronic migrane issue. As a means of support and encouragement for her, I should create my own tulpa as she does. Here is my hang up: I have trouble choosing a form and personality. As a roleplaying gamer and occassional fiction, I have no problems generating enjoyable characters. There is no writer's block here, thank you. Those fictional characters, however, are all short term commitments. I haven't chosen a form for the same reason I have nevevr gotten a tattoo, a certain fear of commitment perhaps. I worry that I might make a decision which I will regret later.

You could just let your tulpa pick his or her own form. Also, remember that a tulpa is able to change his or her form at any time, so their (or your) choice of form won't necessarily be permanent.

Deluded myself into believing my imaginary friends were real, then deluded myself into thinking they weren’t. Whatever the case, the OG gang’s still here:

Host: fennec (they/them)

Tulpas: Alex (he/him) and Kayleigh (she/her)

Delete all memories of those who know my awkward past

Here is what I've tried. I wrote a list of characteristics that I might want in a tulpa. I listed some characters I would definitely not want. I listed a few characters with whom I might not mind sharing my head for a short amount of time, and then I analyzed the chaarcteristics I saw in each of those characters. I am seeing no patterns and no break throughs yet. What processes or excerising do you experienced tulpamancers use to define your tulpae?

I didn't really put much thought into that with mine, to be honest...

I never did personality, for instance (and used pre-existent characters i knew the personality of, though actual personality ended up being kinda different. I'm talking about Kaoru, the other three just came around as an extra gift of sorts).

For personality and form: Just wing it. Despite what it sounds like, it's a more "natural" form of development, and your tulpa will likely connect with you better.

As for the migraines, I also have migraines, especially photosensitive ones, and Maia's been able to help. However, pain block, while not difficult for your tulpa, is somewhat difficult to maintain, so what you'll want to do is have them block the pain for a while, then grab some form of analgesic and ask them to remove the block occasionally until the medicine kicks in, then let them rest and thank them.

I thank you all, but especially Fennecgirl. Your responses might be more helpful than you realize.

I get bad headaches and borderline migraines sometimes. My first tulpa is pretty good at blocking/hiding the pain for a while. Then with the pain reduced or gone, the stress fades, which makes the headache truly go away quicker.

However a tulpa is not necessary here; one can learn to block pain on one's own as well. Lyra surprised me early on by doing it, when I thought it wasn't possible. Then over a couple weeks I figured out a way to do it myself. Still, this and other tricks I've learned from her work better when she does them.

Lyra: human female, ~17

Evan: boy, ~14, was an Eevee

Anera: anime-style girl, ~12; Lyra made her

Why does a tulpa have to have a form? My Chief tulpa can best be described as looking kind of like the birdman on the Buck Rogers TV show. Like the Batman, I have never seen his face and I don't have to. You might mine a list of the Goetic spirits for ideas. Many of them were not quite shapeshifters, but they could assume more than one form. As far as pain management is concerned why not ask your tulpa to learn how to heal you? Many years ago I created a servitor to heal me from carpal tunnel and it did. Well, I would have healed on my own but the servitor accelerated the process. So I wish you luck and skill in your endeavors. Remember the German proverb "The work itself will teach you how to do it."
