Lacquer February 24, 2013 February 24, 2013 As you can see from my post count and signup date, I am very new. I have read through most of the guides posted in the guides section of the site, and a few from the guides section of the forum. I plan on reading all of these eventually, but I have a problem. Obviously, some guides have been put to use more than others, and we all know that many aspects of Dane's and Irish's original few guides are deprecated. What I would like to know is, as this thread's title suggests, is a Guide to Guides. Which guides should be taken with more salt than others? Which guides are old and depreciated? Which guides are new and untested? Which guides are known to work very well? Etc. I know that in the site redesign, there will be a built-in feature for this, but for right now, none exists.
Guest Anonymous February 24, 2013 February 24, 2013 The guides in the guides tab are pretty well regarded. You can tell if something is old if it: * uses hour counts * talks about energy transference * by checking the date it was post * length Usually the weirder, more hardcore guides like switching aren't well tested, so proceed with caution regarding them. But a prerequisite to those guides is having a completed tulpa, so they won't be as imposing then as they are now to n00b5 like you.
Lacquer February 24, 2013 Author February 24, 2013 But old doesn't necessarily mean bad, and new doesn't necessarily mean good. For example, are the original few guides still in high standings if those things you state are ignored? Also, "n00b5"? Great job making a good first impression, ugh.
Guest Anonymous February 24, 2013 February 24, 2013 Lel, I was mocking the use of leetspeak among new members of communities, if it wasn't clear. FAQ Man's guide is awesome, but the use of hour counts can mislead some people. It was one of the first guides. Likewise, this isn't very good at helping people.
Guest EnnervateIndustries February 24, 2013 February 24, 2013 Energy transference is usually just symbolism-speak for concentration, so I wouldn't throw out a guide immediately if it mentions it. I'd say anything that gives an expected schedule for progression or has some form of "this always causes this" is generally suspect, since it usually ties in to hourcounts and similar topics.
Kiahdaj February 24, 2013 February 24, 2013 I don't have even close to the patience that would be required to go, and look at all the guides, and make a mental note of which are more/less accurate than others. Basically, I think you should read all of them pertaining to what it is you're trying to achieve, and decide for yourself which one you want to use. After all, there are very few "wrong" ways to create a tulpa. And if one of those guides were one of those ways, you'd see a giant shitstorm in the comments. It would be hard to miss. That said, not everything that is controversial is wrong. Keep an open mind. But yes, there are of course things that you may want to look out for, like the aforementioned hour count. Which, in itself is not a bad thing. People just turn it into a bad thing. "If this can be avoided, it should. If it can't, then it would be better if it could be. If it happened and you're thinking back to it, try and think back further. Try not to avoid it with your mind. If any of this is possible, it may be helpful. If not, it won't be."
Lacquer February 24, 2013 Author February 24, 2013 I think the issue with hour counts was that people were discounting if the events happened before the hour count said they would.
Kiahdaj February 24, 2013 February 24, 2013 Exactly. Counting hours for the sake of knowing how long it takes you is fine. But discrediting any progress because of lack of "hours" is bad. "If this can be avoided, it should. If it can't, then it would be better if it could be. If it happened and you're thinking back to it, try and think back further. Try not to avoid it with your mind. If any of this is possible, it may be helpful. If not, it won't be."

Just make up your own and it'll be fine! In all seriousness, writing my guide was and still is certainly helpful for me, and to other people who might have read it. Is it the best? No, but nothing else seems to be good for me.
