Sock Cottonwell's System Sketchbook

I've been noticing that I've been doing a decent deal of posting in the "Draw your tulpas" thread, and I did not wish to completely overtake it, especially considering some of the post had a rather journal-ish vibe to them, as I often explained things about the person I drew and how they came about. As such, I thought it would be good to simply make my own thread in the drawing forum for my purposes.

Update 12.06.15

* DumpYourPhoto.com, the hosting site I used, is going to shutdown at the end of this year. As such, I've moved the work I posted in this thread to Postimage.org.

* Since I have more drawings than the image-per-post limit allows, I will instead post a link to my gallery at Postimage.org

* Decided to use the character drawings I had left over as header images. I may change them semi-regularly, based on who my anchor for the time is. Posting Midori here because she's my first, and I don't have a full color image of Sheryl.[/align]

The following one is a newer image I made a few days back. It's of two rather troublesome figures I found in my mind, named Moge-ko and Ru respectively:

Chalk_Troublemakers.png

Copied from my post about this image on tulpa.io:

Not every mental figure that runs around in the mind can be called a "tulpa", but they can grow in to one rather easily. This is something that I learned along the way, as I observed in small ways how my mind made the figures, based on memories, emotions, etc. Not all of these took form, but many did, and these two above are examples of that. These two appeared during a time that was turbulent, where I experienced some rather nasty, DID-like episodes that would last from an hour, to a week. I went in to a bit of detail with it in another thread in the Plurality section. It wasn't a fun period at all, but I did notice some interesting aspects of my experience. Things like how some aggressive figures can be befriended, and attended to peacefully. How some figures will be outright symbolic of something in your mind, or some process in your mind, etc. I still have some reflecting to do on the subject, but it was definitely a pretty educational trip.

These two above, named Moge-ko and Ru respectively, are products of that period. Both began as aggressive, tormenting figures, Moge-ko more-so than Ru. The form are things they picked, based on outside media, Ru picked her's on a whim to further mess with me, as at the time, I was still very insecure about that sort of thing. Moge-ko picked her's because she felt the character fit her. Both of which cooled off with some time, Ru becoming more tame and docile while still having a mischievous edge, and Moge-ko losing her ability to cause her particular form of trouble in an instant, and being at my mercy. I have the aim of ultimately making peace with both, as I feel that both of them are part of my whole, and as such should be handled with care and some affection. This above image is a way of showing good will to them. When I told this to them, Ru reacted rather well, Moge-ko...did not. It will be fine, though.

This isn't a request thread, just a sketchbook thread to place things I drew regarding my dealings in this phenomenon. Consider it a supplement to my PR.

Peace

"Those designs are pretty good, and such pretty clothes! My, you have great tulpas, Sock."

I second her statement. I especially like Moetron's design, but all of your girls are well represented and, well, have this cute side, I guess.

Thank you for your comments guys, I appreciate it. :)

Chalk_Moe_Aya.png

This is an image I just finished up today, including Moetron and Aya. I've been trying to spread out who I draw, so I don't end up drawing the same person over and over again, and as a challenge to myself. Rather than picking who I draw, and how I draw them myself, I roll a dice, and the number dictate who I do an image of, how the image is drawn, how many folks are in it, etc.

Aya, is one I haven't mentioned much here. I guess this is a side effect of keeping track of so many mental figures. At the very least, the girls whom are well developed aren't lonely. I think that last bit is one advantage of me keeping so many figures in memory, even if I can't tend to all of them in a detailed, patient fashion as I could when it was only Midori, Ellenore, and I. Its the sort of thing where I have to adopt a different mindset than I had before, as well as improve my patience, persistence, and even curiosity.

In a way, you could say the persona I'm adopting in regards to this issue is that of a wanderer: I go about from figure to figure, landscape to landscape, speaking to and interacting with the figures that I've memorized, learning and observing and sharing affection with them as I go. I'll stop by certain places longer than usual, using them as a temporary home of sorts (The anchor system I described in my progress report), but soon I'll move on, garnering a constant curiosity about the "land" I live in. The active imagination technique helps a TON with this method of doing things, you'd be surprised what a figure that seems lower, or is often inactive when not observed, can tell you about yourself. It's neat, really, even if it's odd.

As for Aya herself, the way I'd describe her is "Fancy Princess". We have a bit of history together, which I care not to share for her sake, but she's been around for nearly a year now. But, I was unable to properly attend and converse with her, due to some personal issues. Even so, I kept her in mind, and when I first tried out my dice throwing drawing game, her name popped up, so I went to work. Aya lives in a large mansion, with her sister Dorris, and a few other tennants, most of which being more like NPCs as far as their level goes, but still capable of further growth, just like the others. She takes joy in being a prim and proper little lady, and even asked me to find a fancier, more frilly dress because she felt the clothing she was wearing then wasn't good enough for her "princess" status. Since she's the "younger" between Dorris and herself, having emerged after the former, she up and found a shade, gave it a form, and declared it her little sister, which is named "Bow". She's a likable kid, certainly.

Liira_Wall.png

I've taken to making quick and easy vector wallpapers as a way to keep my artistic output up. Usually, the wallpapers are very simple, abstract things, but this one is specifically one of my indwellers, Liira. I got the idea for this one when I took an avatar I made for her for a different forum, and made set it as a wallpaper. Because it wasn't properly dimension, it of course did not come about well, but it gave me an idea to go ahead and make a wallpaper based on this experience, and the above was the result.

I tend to favor darker colors when it comes to wallpapers, but that can't be helped too much, as Liira has very light everything. I thought it'd be a nice flourish to have some soft orange gradients at the edges, as most of the image is made of a very light shade of blue.

Update 12.06.2015:

*Since I was changing up a lot of the images in the thread to a different host, and I had them laying around, I decided to pop in two of the other wallpapers I made with the drawings done so far.

Update 12.11.2015

*Used the more polished version of the Midori drawing in the same wall design. I may play around with it more in due time, as the product is still extremely simple. I'll get to polishing Tomo's wall later.

Update 12.16.2015

*Tomo wall done.

Don't have too many complete pieces to show off today, but I had a few sketches around my computer, so I decided to put those up.

Aya_Sketch.jpg

I did this sketch of Aya a few days ago, while I was at work. I wanted to draw someone, but I wasn't sure who, so I rolled a die and her name came up, heh. I wanted to make such selections in to a little game, and I'll add some more factors to the rulesheet I made soon.

Lil_Gladys_Sketch.jpg

A sketch of Gladys I made further back. Can't remember what the idea behind this one was, just wanted to draw Gladys so I did.

Chal_Kellogg_Run.jpg

I made this Kellogg Chalky not too long after I made the first one, I just never posted it. I wanted to do something that wasn't just standing, so I did this.

For a while, I stopped drawing altogether, even had anxiety about doing any sort of art due to some issues concerning employment after coming out of school. Thought using this skill was a mistake, and I should do something completely different in order to make up for it, among a few other factors concerning my confidence in said work. As time went on, though, I warmed back up to the skill I tried to abandon, and have been doing simpler pieces, more geared toward my personal tastes. I wanted to try and enjoy the work I did more, as I felt I forgot how to have fun with art in my initial search to improve and make myself employable. Fortunately, it seems to be working, as I'm starting to feel that niggle in me to expand myself in what I draw and how I draw it.

But this thread will remain where I put my purely fun work. I like drawing my indwellers, and trying to catch their personalities in an image. I like the possible bonding, and the solidity of mental image it offers. As well, it makes it easier to introduce and describe the girls in here.

I went and shared an image from my sketchbook with someone on the irc, it being one of the few instances where I drew myself with one of my girls. This one being inspired by a letter I received from one of my undeveloped figures (I called them fragments in my PR, so I'll pick that up again here). The message contained and image of her sitting on my lap, as she spoke about a few things regarding how she came to be, and what sort of foot we met each other on. I felt struck by the image, and so I decided to draw it out in my sketchbook.

Sock_Pkpk.jpg

Since I had taken a photo of the above, I decided to grab a few more sketches of done of the various figures, both developed ones and fragments. Since I use my sketchbook as part journal, I have little text blurbs next to the images, as well.

I'll get back to doing more complete stuff soon. Peace.

Those designs are really cute, If I have to choose my favorites, Moetron and Liira win the award

I'm really intrigued about how is the behavior of Moetron and Midori so your PR is a must

Also, you should specify which program do you usually use to draw and design. I already know it, but you should specify it here too

Keep the good work

Thank you for the reply, it is appreciated!

While I go at length to describe Midori's personality and development as she's my first, I have a good chunk less information on Moetron in the PR. Though, as a summary of what she is, she's one of the indwellers most tied to the craft of drawing of the ones I've met. She was actually spawned from a project I was working on, and I ended up getting highly attached to the characters. At about the same time, I was working on Midori, and just learning a tiny bit about how my mind works. So, when I saw Moetron floating around my mind, I made a symbolic promise to finish her project. She's been around since, though she changed her form for a while, only to change it back.

Despite her wild appearance, she actually a rather down to Earth sort of girl, sweet natured and really, really likes being drawn. I remember a time when I first spoke to her after a period of not doing any internal communication, and the first thing she asked me to do was draw her. As of this writing, I haven't fulfilled the promise yet. But, I do plan to make something regarding her, though I may not mention it much here.

As for the software I use, for drawing and such, I use MyPaint. For vector images, I use Inkscape. Both are free software, and I have download links listed in the drawing reference thread above.

Gladys_My_Paint.png Liira_Inkscape.png

Oh, and here's the drawing I was working on in the MyPaint screen shot.

Simple_Gladys.png

It's the other sketch I posted a few days back. I enjoy MyPaint a lot because its very easy to just start the program and start drawing without any set up. The canvas seems near infinite, so its just a matter of zooming in and out to determine how large you want your drawing to be. As well, I like its focus on acting like pen-and-paper...though it still instils the nasty habit of becoming reliant on the Undo command. Heh. I really like it.

  • 1 month later...

A few days back, I was reading through Bridgman's book on Constructive Anatomy. It made me recall something about how I was drawing my cartoon figures, and it tickled me a little. As such, I decided to make a little comparison sketch about it, using my current anchor, Sheryl, as one of the examples of the idea.

Similarities_Smaller.png

I had realised earlier that when I was drawing girls, especially when I went out of my way to make the drawings quick, that the way I constructed them was similar to the way I constructed the character at the right, which is named "Hermit Smith" (I do draw things that are not cute girls, after all :) ). Being that he's made up of very simple shapes under the clothing, whereas I tend to get very meticulous and careful about how the girls look under the clothes, despite the fact that the cloths cover the things I'm slaving over, I found it funny, as well. I believe the bowling pin comparison came a little after the initial Hermit Smith one.

Sheryl was partially complicit in this image's creation, and I wanted to get her say on it, so I had her tell me some of her thoughts.

I wanted Cottonwell to make this picture without using any references. You see, when he's dealing with girls like me, he always goes straight for DuckDuckGo, so he can find good pictures to get us right. Well, I didn't want him to do that this time, because I wanted him to know that although I'm "Sherlock", I'm not just the character from the show he liked. I wanted him to know that I'm HIS Sheryl, and that's why. Though he did end up looking for some later on, because of my bunny shirt, you'see. I liked it, but at that point, he was mostly done, and he just wanted the extra detail. After all, you guys can't see me hopping like a bunny for him *Laughs*. I'm just happy to get drawn, it's like, and ownership thing for me. Hehe, I guess I have some identity issues, but that's okay, I'm happy!

Love,

Sherlock Cottonwell! <3

The hosting site I've been using up to now, DumpYourPhoto, is closing down, so I'm going to have to start taking all my images to another hosting site. So if there's a bunch of missing links and broken images one day, that's why.
