So I've heard of two tulpas combining into one tulpa before, but is it possible for a tulpa to split into two? I'm not saying this as if this is something me or my tulpa has considered, it's hypothetical as the title says.

I'd like to learn as much about tulpas as I can, even stuff that probably won't be relevant later on down the road. (But could be) So because of that I like to ask these kind of questions then look them up. Finding nothing, here is the thread I created about it.

If this is something that has actually happened to your tulpa, please share. If not, give your best guess as to what you think would happen. I know that the community is still arguing over what a tulpa even is to begin with, but give it your best shot.

First off, do you think it's possible at all? If so, would the two resulting tulpas need to be forced with or will the mind just sorta... do mind things and figure it all out? Would the two be able to re-combine later down the road? Would the tulpa need to be created with the ability to split in the first place or could it be done later on? (In case anyone's curious, yes we came up with this question while watching Steven Universe)

Bonus: They should really add a [Hypothetical] title prefix. Seems almost necessary (at least while I'm around)

Keep in mind that, honestly, the end-all be-all in tulpamancy is just what you believe. There is no, "Oh, when a tulpa is split into two you have to this and this, and they act like this." Really, whatever you think will happen will happen. This community's all about compiling the most fluid, efficient, and positive beliefs that make for a generally productive experience. There are no right answers, but there are answers that could definitely help someone.

That being said, back before I knew about tulpas, this actually happened to me. Or rather, to Flandre. Her, Reisen, and Tewi all came into existence spontaneously roughly 7 years ago. After a year they were basically developed tulpas, but at the same time that was the point of least-sureness in their identities. Though Reisen's never worried about a thing in her life, and Tewi back then didn't care and now can explain away/logically deal with anything. Flandre was the main one of them that really questioned who and what she was. I think by the end of the next year, she'd become tired of the somewhat bipolar nature she had, as she used to go between loving me and hating me quite often. Honestly, I'm pretty sure she was jealous of the relationship Reisen and I had, which was 100% warranted as I somewhat neglected the other two for her. Back then we considered all of my tulpas to firmly represent something, and since Reisen represented love, it was hard for Flan to compete. Anyways, one day she told me she wanted to change herself, that she didn't want to be angry or aggressive ever again. So in {insert subjective and imaginary explanation here}, I separated the niceness, love and shyness into Flandre, and the crudeness, anger and some aspect of insanity (RIP Touhou fandom negatively affected my tulpa) into a new one named Scarlet. Right off the bat both of them were overly exaggerated in their mannerisms, Flandre was too scared to talk and Scarlet had some choice words for me. In yet another completely subjective and imaginary way, I tried to dissipate Scarlet as really she wasn't supposed to exist. And I thought it worked, until she came back about a year later out of nowhere and said "No hard feelings?" Flan was back to what would become normal within a week or so, apparently better for it.

But honestly, that entire thing only happened because we really weren't mature back then. We didn't understand quite how subjective experiences worked, or ourselves really. Flandre could've changed herself without that personality split as a catalyst. And I'm glad Scarlet came back (tulpas really can't die by the way, they're only dead as long as you believe they are and don't think of them). Though she could probably care less if she existed or not, she came back to help me deal with something that she was more suited to than my other tulpas. And when I don't need her help, she's completely inactive, refusing to take part in normal tulpa activities. I don't think anyone really has hard feelings per se, but the whole thing could've been handled better and with less drama. I really suggest anyone thinking of anything remotely similar to think about the true nature of purely mental entities, and how much control you and them both have over every aspect of their existence. Flandre could've changed herself on a whim if she'd wanted. And most problems people run into with their tulpas could be fixed through talking and changing your beliefs on how things are around. Dissipation, splitting/merging, and other such things are almost entirely unnecessary. Everything you could do in your mind would simply be symbolic to enable you to believe that things had changed, but if you just realize you can change what you believe to whatever you want, you wouldn't have to take such drastic actions.

Anyway, hope that meant something to you, and anyone else who read it. There are no rules or for-sures in mental phenomena, it's all controlled by your beliefs. And tons of "symbolic" things can be very useful for immersion + changing yourself or your tulpa. But never forget you're completely in control of everything. There are no evil entities if you stop believing there are. And your tulpas won't die if you don't think they will. Whether you do want to think so is up to you, I suppose, but just know that you have power over your own mind. By no longer believing that you don't.

My tulpas and I have a Q&A thread, which was the first (and largest) of its kind. Feel free to ask us about tulpamancy stuff there.

Eury: Yiiikes, and now I gotta go think my life over again.

Well, Reis has now established that bifurcation is indeed a thing. I'm just gonna go on a say here that, from peeersonal experience that it can work out. Steth and I are kind of considered to be dual-natured. At the core, we are a bifurcation, and it works out for us. There isn't an exact original entity we once were, but we aren't exactly whole by ourselves, you know? It's some weird dual-nature type shit.

Sooo there's a lot of different possible outcomes if ya want to bifurcate a headmate! First off, I'd definitely check in and see if said tulpa/headmate/whateverwackadooo actually wants to be split in half. (No, like, seriouslyyy, or I'll have to get on your butt for not getting consent and shit.)

And consider your reasons for bifurcation! Is it like with the Touhou dudes, to try and stabilize personality? Or is it FOR SCIENCE just to see the outcome? Like, really? Is it a good reason, because splitting yourself in half is serious shit.

I have my own hypothesis on possible outcomes of bifurcation, but they definitely not the only possible outcomes. Gonna add onto the list if I find mooore~.

~ Do a Flandre: Separate a particular attribute from the source tulpa, and it becomes it's own entity! The *aggression stuff was split off of Flandre and became Scarlet.

~ Do a Gorgwane: Partial bifurcation; splits the headmate into two separate entities, but their identity and personalities remain largely intertwined. Two halves of a whole, like me and Stethy.

~ Do a Garnet: Like a gem fusion gets unfused. You end up with two entirely different, entirely separate entities.

Do I recommeeend bifurcation? I dunno! Everybody's different, and it depeeends on your situation and tulpa people!

Yes, apparently they can. Why, not? They are imaginary.

To clarify, Scarlet wasn't just a bundle of anger, though she probably seems like it. When I say "aggression" I meant coarseness, directness, that sort of thing. She's the only one of my tulpas that will get mad at me/very forcefully ~suggest~ I do something. But even back when she was first created she was a person, I still feel bad that I ever thought it was okay to just get rid of someone like that. Seems to her like that's just normal interaction though, I never heard a word of spite once she came back.

"The Flandre" (dunno how we feel about that) seems like the most common and practical method, but that's just me. The crystal gems in Steven Universe are a really interesting concept, and I could see that working if both tulpas were willing. But the partial one where there's effectively two of the original, that just seems strange to me. It's like having twin children, you're constantly afraid you're giving one too much attention and need to do everything you do with one with the other. Not my sort of thing I suppose, unless you meant in a yin-yang sort of way. I couldn't stand having two super-similar tulpas. Luckily "Flandre" Scarlet and Flandre "Scarlet" are nothing alike. They also both go by just one name, by the way, most of my tulpas do.

Funny that a thread like this pops up just as I decide to begin digging deeper into my own mind to see if Arro was actually a tulpa I inadvertently created as a kid, just under a different name, and to see if any of the other characters in my long-existing fantasy world had ever developed into full-fledged tulpas. One of my theories is actually that Arro could have split off from the hypothetical "first" tulpa somehow and become his own being while still leaving the first intact.

First off, thanks for your input. But about the quoted paragraph above, I don't ask these hypotheticals because I think that tulpamancy can boiled down to a specific method, I ask them because I want to see if:

a. someone has done/attempted it before

b. how someone would do it based on their beliefs

Sometimes it's interesting to see something from another's perspective.

Sorry, I have to put up huge SUBJECTIVITY WARNING THIS IS TECHNICALLY MEANINGLESS warnings whenever I write about something like that. Especially when it's something I did so long ago when I was still relatively stupid. The "warnings" were meant to be extrapolated from to give you more context to the question, ie don't rely too much on any "method" or put too much stock in how other people do things. As for me, I really don't approve of what I did so I had to double up on the subjectivity warnings. Only needs to be said once though, everyone else can say whatever they like.

Troy: Euryale's theorizing was a gross oversimplification, and she should edit it. To be honest here, Scarlet sounds to have a similar role to myself. In the manner of getting our host to do things, that is.

Fade: Except I'm bad at taking him seriously.

Troy: Fuck you.

Eury: It is kinda yin-yang-y after a while. At first, you're kind of like the same person in two entities, but you grow apart from yourself. Yourselves? Meh. Over time, you diverge a bit~. It's not a "BAM" all-at-once process. Steth and I are way different now, and it's been two years since we were a thing.

The whole give-attention-to-both dealio wasn't a big issue for Fade. 'Cause somehow she juggled nine of us at once. Maybe we need to look in to how that was a thing, because everyone else is like, "but attention!" as a reason why you shouldn't have too many headfriends.
