before I get to my point I want to state my biases: over the course of my life I have been with 3 dogs, and I haven't spent a whole lot of time not living with dogs, while I have never had a cat and haven't spent more than a few hours with any given cat

 

I think that both dogs and cats have many desirable qualities. dogs are very lovey dovey and sweet and it can be easy to get along with them. cats can also show affection, but it takes longer to earn the trust of a cat and even once you have grown close to a cat they will still generally act more aloof than dogs. cats have their own things going on and you are just one part of their life. cats are very independent creatures. dogs, on the other hand, live for their pack, and will do just about anything for their family. these 2 behavioral archetypes both have different sorts of appeals, and thus cannot be fairly compared. both cats and dogs are good
