A few years ago, I was frustrated by my inability to find a fairly comprehensive list of this nature on the Web, so I compiled this list to assist with creating character profiles for creative writing and roleplaying. My list is the result of performing union and difference operations on a number of similar, smaller lists I'd found on the Web, with some careful manual editing at the end. I wrote a program to do the bulk of the work, but I imagine a few grep commands could have accomplished the same. The idea was to print this list in multi-column format (it will fit in two pages of six columns of 50 words) and highlight any adjectives that might apply to a new character, to help get me thinking about what makes that character distinctive from others.
