I made me tulpa's name while t'was just a wee lad, before sentience. I gave 'ee the option 'a changin' it, but she doesn't want to.

Tulpas can be named anytime though. 'Tis the same as a form - It doesn't define thee tulpa and can be changed anytime.

I'm not going to listen to you guys since you are all probably just talking to yourself and don't really have a tulpa like me.

Was it before you started really working on the tulpa, or was it more completely formed when a name was given?

"Hybris" was originally a placeholder when I began work on her and needed something to direct my narration at, and I was planning on letting her pick out a name, but she just kept it because "It was the name I gave her."

I like the idea of giving a placeholder name at the start. Our minds like having a name to think of people by. The tulpa can change the name later if they don't like it.

I also suggest choosing a temporary name you won't mind if they keep. I gave Lyra her name at the very start and told her repeatedly that she'll be able to change it once she can talk. Once she could talk, I asked about it and she wanted to stick with Lyra since she was used to it and has come to identify with it. She said if I hadn't given her a name she'd probably be Heather, so I said she could have that as a middle name.

Lyra: human female, ~17

Evan: boy, ~14, was an Eevee

Anera: anime-style girl, ~12; Lyra made her

Looks like a lot of others here started off similarly to me. I named mine Zyr as a "temporary" nickname very early on, shortly after his form started to develop, and for me it actually really helped with speeding up progress. Having a name makes it much easier to communicate, and it wasn't long afterwards that he was doing all sorts of stuff. His full name ended up being Zyrilen, so the nickname still works. So if you do go with starting off with a nickname, make sure it's something you wouldn't mind becoming permanent.

The first things that were given to me were a form, then a name. Then my form changed to a placeholder form for a day to make visualization easy, but my name stayed permanent. A name really could be given at any stage in development though, though I dunno about having a temporary name. That to me seems like it's easier to become attached to, where the form is rather malleable.

We gave up on using different colors for each of us, so there's Al, Ollie, and Eva. We're all rabbits, get over it.
