Ranger November 24, 2020 November 24, 2020 There was some on and off conversation about the forums being vulnerable to a flood of new users in case tulpamancy becomes viral. While I'm not worried about this happening right now, I thought of a possible solution that could help in this situation or whenever the active users are feeling stretched thin. I wonder if we could do a scheduled event where someone signs up to give a presentation over Discord voice chat at a certain time. I figured this would look like one tulpamancer screen sharing a Google Slides presentation and then holding a questions session or two depending on how long the presentation is. The presentation can link to guides, go over the home page, faq's, etc. I also thought it would be cool if some presentations were specific to things like vocality advice, possession, forms and wonderlands, etc. I don't think this is necessary for right now, but it could be useful if we got 10+ new users in a short period of time. The other bonus to a VC Q&A is a lot of people may have the same question and it gets answered once or twice instead of 5 or 7 times per group of 10+ people. The only problem is this requires prep work in advance and I'm not sure how many people want to collaborate to work on this or think it's a good idea. I like the idea of doing this myself, but this may not be everyone's thing. I'm also not sure if the GAT needs to look over the presentations or something. Lucilyn November 24, 2020 November 24, 2020 A presentation, for if tulpamancy went viral? Why would we want to dedicate 100x the effort in the case of there being too many people and us being too spread thin, do you expect 25+ people watching the presentation? well, if you wanna do it, you could just do this if like 4-5 new users that were really wanting to learn a lot showed up at once, but I think the best thing for a huge influx of newbies would be a new very comprehensive guide which we would make probably pretty quickly, but it would have to be a HUGE influx of users asking questions and stuff, not just a small one, so don't count on that lol Hi, I'm one of Lumi's tulpas! A really rough but readable creation guide could theoretically be written in a week, but a well written one would take a lot longer. Creation guides usually take a long time to write because they are so long. Creation guides generally have one author, but it would be faster if multiple authors collaborated. I'm assuming the presentations would have group collaboration if people liked the idea. Note: I'm hit-or-miss activity-wise on this account. I may not respond to PMs for awhile. Jamie November 24, 2020 November 24, 2020 (edited) I don't think this makes any sense. If it really gets overwhelming I'd probably support a gateway channel for the Discord server and we'd have a !beginner or !new Nadeko term or something so we could spam them with a small handful of links and then just, they'd have to wait ten min to get into the server, so please lord almighty look at those links. Many still would not, so maybe we would have a #beginners channel just to quarantine them off a little so the discussion channels don't get flooded with "wut is tulpa." But honestly having the newbies in the same spaces as people who know what's going on is really good, and having a dedicated "wut is tulpa" channel is a good way to start having the blind teaching the blind. More knowledgeable people get sick of repetitive questions from newbies so they don't look at that channel, and you end up with only newbies talking to one another. There's a major flaw in your plan, Ranger: most half-lurking newbies will not want to hop into VC. I also think of guides differently, and "Write a creation guide!" really isn't my priority for newblood... If someone has 0 clue what axolotls are or how to care for them or how long they live or what their temperaments are like or if they're even legal in their country, and there's a rush on buying axolotls because, I dunno, Pewdiepie came out and bought one and said everyone should, the first resource I'm going to put out is not "How To Get An Axolotl." I'd probably come out with a resource "What Pewdiepie didn't tell you about Axolotls". So if some big youtuber makes a video and he's saying that tulpas cure depression and permaswitching is a big danger and that all tulpas are based on anime characters, we'd probably write up a tailed FAQ: "So You Watched [Big Youtuber]'s Video On Tulpas, and Ended Up Here" that would go into what that video misrepresented or didn't talk about. And we can't plan ahead for that, because we don't know what that hypothetical youtube video looks like. I really meant in a non-mocking way, "Do you expect like 25 people to be in those presentations or something?" It sounds WAY harder to do something fancy like that than to at LEAST make a Youtube video people could watch any time or something anyways, we weren't really talking about a "creation guide" per se, we've always thought if we made a guide it would be a huge one basically going over tons of aspects of tulpamancy as we understand it, that would give beginners (and maybe even not beginners) a much better understanding of tulpamancy as a whole than any other guides in our opinion though we kinda felt Tulpa's guide filled that role, we never read the whole thing to know if it was good and concise and accurate, and recently someone said they didn't necessarily like it and Tulpa said he wasn't interested in looking at it anymore, so now it's more on the table that we'd make our own time isn't really a problem, depending on how ambitious we got (it'd be best if the guide wasn't a massive textwall, unless we figure out a way to make it visually modular) I can't imagine it taking us more than a few days can you even imagine how much our system could write if we wrote all day for two days straight..? It sounds WAY harder to do something fancy like that than to at LEAST make a Youtube video people could watch any time or something I was wondering about a classroom sized group of beginners hopping into VC and them being muted for most of a presentation. I thought it would put a lot less strain on other people because they could say "ask at the presentation" or something. I think editing a YouTube video would be more difficult. It would be everything you would need to do for a presentation (audio, content, script, etc.) and interesting visuals. It could be a powerpoint, but I wonder if recording the presentation and posting that would also help? I personally think 10 people is still a lot though, especially if they're creating 2-7 BQG posts per day for awhile. 3 hours ago, Jamie said: More knowledgeable people get sick of repetitive questions from newbies so they don't look at that channel, and you end up with only newbies talking to one another. That's what I'm hoping to avoid. I figured the tulpamancer or tulpa giving the presentation has the qualifications to answer questions accurately and only one experienced person would be tired from one 30-45 minute presentation (with Q&A) and everyone else would be freed up. Essentially, the goal is to answer a lot of beginner questions more efficiently without people feeling left behind and too many people being dragged down. As you said, a quarantine channel by itself isn't going to be the best solution by itself, and I worry that too many people will still want to talk to someone more experienced with beginner questions instead of do their research. These presentations won't run every day, at most I'm thinking once or twice a week. The hard part would be to organize the presentation ahead of time, and then when we need it it's hop into VC and present while others listen in. 3 hours ago, Jamie said: There's a major flaw in your plan, Ranger: most half-lurking newbies will not want to hop into VC. That is something I'm concerned about. I'm hoping at least 1 person out of the large group will ask questions, and the rest will stay muted. I figured I could type a message in the voice chat and those who want their questions answered can react with a hand emoji or something. I think recording the live presentations will help cover those who are either too scared to hop in or miss the presentation. 3 hours ago, Jamie said: I also think of guides differently, and "Write a creation guide!" really isn't my priority for newblood... I'd probably come out with a resource "What Pewdiepie didn't tell you about Axolotls". That's the advantage to a mass Q & A session. If a YouTuber said something stupid like possession puts you at risk of having nightmares, I could say no, that's not a thing. That's why I want someone with more experience doing the presentations because they could answer these questions on the fly. 3 hours ago, Lucilyn said: can you even imagine how much our system could write if we wrote all day for two days straight..? I couldn't write a short guide in two days even if I tried. I would burn out way too quickly. I don't want to pressure anyone to deliver something like a guide in such a short time span unless it was planned in advance. You are more than welcome to write a huge guide in two days, but I don't want to pressure you into delivering that. You know those lame school PowerPoints you had to do in school? I was thinking of doing one of those but keeping it short and sweet. No fancy graphics, no huge one hour presentation, just something to introduce the topic and mostly focus on answering questions all at once. Note: I'm hit-or-miss activity-wise on this account. Lucilyn November 24, 2020 November 24, 2020 the main problem with presentations (and boy you hear this from us a lot) is that they're a one time thing for just a tiny handful of people, whereas public stuff on the forum (or say a Youtube video) reaches potentially thousands of people for putting effort into it once like your presentation idea sounds like the opposite of what you should do if tulpamancy goes viral, it'd make more sense to do it right now... or maybe if like a popular video comes out about tulpamancy and a good number of people show up, but not literally viral or a huge explosion of people, then it would just be a nice thing to do for those people, but for every 5-10 people willing to participate in a discord call (even muted) there's 20-30+ more who just want to lurk (and no, joining discord muted is going way too far for those people) Hi, I'm one of Lumi's tulpas!
