Dee January 30, 2015 January 30, 2015 Seriously.. How many here are just roleplaying or pretending to have spooky mind ghosts? Are there any legitimate tulpamancers here? Is the whole tulpa thing even real or is this a conspiracy made by 40 year old virgin neckbeards made to piss everyone off? I don't know, this whole business sounds a little.. unlikely.
sushi January 30, 2015 January 30, 2015 Actually, it's a conspiracy by Lauren Faust to promote her cartoons and related merchandice. No, but seriously, the tulpa phenomena dates back to ancient Tibet, where Tibetan monks trained their minds by having sex with imaginary ponies. This one is called Jade Dash. (And this is a bit off the topic, but I like your username. I also use single letters as variables when coding in Python. I usually start at the end of the alphabet, but I see you start at the beginning. Out of curiosity, is there any particular significance to testing whether the variable D has the value of 8?) Huh, that sounds interesting (the Tibet part. the Lauren Faust part as well actually). Do you have any reading material on the Tibetian horsefuckers part? Has anyone ever managed to prove the whole tulpa thing? Any evidence at all? And seriously, even if tulpas are real (as in talking headm8s), there's no way the majority here aren't pretending... Right? (To your question, my username's actually pretty philosophical: 8 symbolizes infinity and how everything's connected in the neverending circle of the universe, as well as being the number of the letter H in the alphabet, while D's number is exactly half of that, 4, symbolizing how sometimes even infinity is only a half of itself, which reminds us how little we are in this colossal plane of existence. It's written in a boolean condition form both as a reminder that almost everything in our lives is a mechanical instrument, purely a result of existing conditions and is there without any concern to our opinion of it, and also because a boolean condition isn't a fact so to speak, it's a question: it checks if it's true. That's to remind us to question anything and everything and that nothing is sure. just kidding. look at it sideways. And why the hell would you start at the end of the alphabet? You're creating a new variable, it adds to your count of variables, not the opposite..)
sushi January 30, 2015 January 30, 2015 Well, if you want a serious answer, no, we don't have proof. The problem is that everything that goes on inside your head is very subjective. As an example, I've never done LSD, so I can't be sure that people who do it really hallucinate. For all I know, LSD is a drug that makes you lie to people about your personal experiences. We don't have proof, but we do have anecdotes. Lots and lots of anecdotes. Pretty much anytime someone talks to something long enough, they'll start to hear it talking back. You'll see this in religious people who hear God talking to them, paranormal investigators who communicate with ghosts, writers who feel their characters have come to life, and children with favorite toys or imaginary friends. Even actors who spend a long time pretending something is true have a hard time convincing themselves otherwise. We can't know for sure whether any given person is a roleplayer, but it does seem likely (based on the vast number of anecdotal evidence from people doing this independently of each other) that many people really have experienced creating voices in their heads. Even psychologists take it seriously. "Some things have to be believed to be seen." - Ralph Hodgson
sushi January 30, 2015 January 30, 2015 I figured you would, but I thought why not have a little fun with it first? :) "Some things have to be believed to be seen." - Ralph Hodgson
Officer January 30, 2015 January 30, 2015 Doesn't seem really inflammatory, why report? It's not like the user is being radical, they're just feeding a debate...of sorts. Plus, Sushi linked a boatload of nice references.
Guest amber5885 January 30, 2015 January 30, 2015 Because he's obviously trolling but a report isn't asking the mods to shut it down, its just asking them to look at the situation and handle it how they see fit. His username needs to change and his approach is juvenile at best there are better ways to handle a "I would like proof" discussion than to start a thread labeled "one huge troll" with a username that is obviously a dick. I reported it so that the mods would at least look at those issued and address them. If he wants to have this conversation in a reasonable manner without trying to give metaphysical meaning to his undersized penis logo then I'd be happy to. This is simply not the way to do it. If he wants an actual serious discussion on the topic I'd be happy to have one. Also sushi"s always good for the links :D But on the off chance that our phallus shape friend is listining, there really is no way to prove that anyone is or is not trolling. There have been a few in my time here that I would say with 100% or at least 90% certainy were faking and one or two are still running around here. (refering to the example of instant tulpas, sentience after one forcing session that kind of thing) that would lead me to belive role player. AND there have been a few that I got a bad vibe from but I can't prove one way or the other if they actually had tulpas. The fact is there is no way to prove it but your Probobly right with a topic such as this its most likely that at least a small handful of the usernames here are faking. But sushi is right this is a practice going back centuries and has proof of existence not just among the creative elite like actors and writers but in modern psychiatry they are starting to research the claims and take them seriously. So maybe in a few years I'll be able to send you a link to various brain scans as proof that someone is truly communicating with something that only they can see but until then I'll tell you the same thing I tell every other person who comes here asking for proof. The proof is in the practice. I can't prove that the being I speak to and have spoken to for 22 years is a real person capable of his own rational thought, intervention and feelings but just the same as you can't prove that he isn't real. If you want to know for sure, give it a try.

Even psychologists take it seriously. Wow, yeah, ok. That's pretty good points and sources, I'm still pretty sure there are a lot of roleplayers here, but hey I guess there's more of a reason to believe the concept probably exists than I thought. Thanks. One thing that still bothers me though, if narrating + belief is all that it takes to create a tulpa, how come not all (or most) priests (of all religions) have thier own tulpas? They believe in their god, they actively force to him through prayer a lot, shouldn't they have a tulpa of god in their heads? I reported this thread sushi. "If I don't like the way the thread is phrased or what the OP is saying I must report it for it is spam!" Seriously, you didn't really make much of a point here so I can't say much other than there was nothing in this thread that called for a report. Because he's obviously trolling but a report isn't asking the mods to shut it down, its just asking them to look at the situation and handle it how they see fit. Where's the trolling here? What did I say that is phrased in a way that implies its intention is to invoke anger? I put a legitimate point forward, that according to my (previous) knowledge there was very little reason to believe the whole tulpa thing is real and it's not just a bunch of guys playing pretend, and yet the very little there was was enough for me to consider it enough to ask for the perspective of the users of the forums, hence the thread. No, it isn't asking the mods to shut it down, it's just saying you believe there is enough likelihood for it to be irrelevant or have an element which should not be allowed, which again, is hardly logical. His username needs to change and his approach is juvenile at best there are better ways to handle a "I would like proof" discussion than to start a thread labeled "one huge troll" with a username that is obviously a dick. Oh I just love people with the "my approach is the only right approach" attitude. Why does my username need to change? Is there a ban on "juvenile" (which basically means not to your taste more than actually juvenile)? More importantly, does my username/attitude hinder discussions in any way? Yes, it is labeled "one huge troll" because that is the title which represents the point I was trying to convey best (which I have already mentioned): that it seemed to me on basis of my previous knowledge and impression of the idea that the concept of tulpas in unlikely, in which case the reason for so many people to deal with the subject is questionable. Yes, there may be better ways for YOU to handle it, but this is the way which expressed my views and opinions best, and seeing as it didn't harm any other threads or discussions through spam or anything of the like I honestly see no rationale in what you're saying other than "I don't like it and I don't really want to ignore it". I reported it so that the mods would at least look at those issued and address them. What issues? Where is the spam? Where is the lack of points? Where is the lack of content? Yes, I didn't phrase it the way you would, but that doesn't make what I was saying any less valid. If he wants to have this conversation in a reasonable manner.. What was so unreasonable about the manner in which I handled this discussion? I made a pretty valid point which did not hinder any other discussions or spammed the forum in any way for the purpose of both educating myself and sharing my views and concerns with the rest of the forum. ...without trying to give metaphysical meaning to his undersized penis logo then I'd be happy to. This is simply not the way to do it. I'm sorry, where does it say in the rules that the forum has a strict "no fun" policy? The metaphysical section was secondary to my main point and in no way drew attention to it in a way that causes an actual problem to address my main point. My username is like that because it's the first thing that came to my mind, I honestly don't see the problem in it. But if you disagree with the way I choose to express myself and think my username is that harmful that you simply can't have a discussion with me, then don't. By all means, you won't see me forcing you to respond here. If he wants an actual serious discussion on the topic I'd be happy to have one. Also sushi"s always good for the links :D There was nothing that wasn't serious enough for a discussion to be had in what I wrote. But yes, I agree, kudos to sushi for the reading material. But on the off chance that our phallus shape friend is listining, there really is no way to prove that anyone is or is not trolling. You do know my username doesn't represent my shape, right? There have been a few in my time here that I would say with 100% or at least 90% certainy were faking and one or two are still running around here. (refering to the example of instant tulpas, sentience after one forcing session that kind of thing) that would lead me to belive role player. AND there have been a few that I got a bad vibe from but I can't prove one way or the other if they actually had tulpas. Glad you decided to contribute to the discussion anyway. I've actually been looking around several tulpa communities, and what you're saying actually contributed to my suspicion a lot. Some stories just sounded so... weird. Like even if you assume tulpas exist, the stories were just too unlikely, like a guy having a mean tulpa that attacks his insecurities and forces him to do stuff for it, and if he tries to get rid of it he gets seizures and sensations of bugs eating his skin. The fact is there is no way to prove it but your Probobly right with a topic such as this its most likely that at least a small handful of the usernames here are faking. The question is how many.. If 2% of the community is faking, that has a way different implication on the topic of tulpas, their need, and the difficulty of creating them than if 98% of the community is faking. But sushi is right this is a practice going back centuries and has proof of existence not just among the creative elite like actors and writers but in modern psychiatry they are starting to research the claims and take them seriously. Yeah, unless the sources sushi cited were written by Laura Faust as a part of her conspiracy I recognize a pattern there that's in line with the whole concept and many of the posts I've seen about it. If it is a troll however, 10/10 you managed to get an actual psychological research going So maybe in a few years I'll be able to send you a link to various brain scans as proof that someone is truly communicating with something that only they can see but until then I'll tell you the same thing I tell every other person who comes here asking for proof. Lol can you really blame us when people here are talking about magical invisible ponies sitting on their shoulders and commentating on their food? Don't get me wrong, if that's your thing I'm totally fine with it, but come that raises a few questions about the validity of the whole thing. The proof is in the practice. I can't prove that the being I speak to and have spoken to for 22 years is a real person capable of his own rational thought, intervention and feelings but just the same as you can't prove that he isn't real. I see your point, but as a rule you probably understand it makes more sense to assume nothing exists until proven otherwise than to assume that everything exists until proven otherwise (unless we want to get researchers looking for evidence Spiderman is real..). Also, 22 years? holy fuck, I need the story on this one. How did it start? How long did it take you to create your tulpa? How has it changed over the years? How has it changed you over the years? Feel free to ignore the questions, just putting them out there so I can have more insight on the subject; more information never killed anyone assuming you're not BSing me and are a troll along with everyone else in this community If you want to know for sure, give it a try. Sure, that way I'll know it exists if I suddenly get a headm8 after a while, but how will I know it isn't in case that's the truth? I can't tell how long it would take me to create an actual tulpa, 2 months? 8 months? 3 years? How do I know when to stop? Well that was a long post.
Guest amber5885 January 30, 2015 January 30, 2015 Im not trolling. Toby started as an imaginary friend when I was about 7. He just showed up one day and through years of playing with him and talking with him he developed his own personality and began to take on a life of his own. He hasn't changed much other than his maturity level and some of his interests. He used to hate kids movies and cartoons but I'm slowly turning him around. He has changed me in that I used to be suicidally depressed. It was bad, but he sat with me and offered me insight and opinions and over time he actually pulled me out of my rut and it's been a very long time since I have had an episode and when I do get slightly depressed he is easy to talk to and to lean on. And before you say that agreeing with someone is likely to make them happy 90% of the time he doesn't. He has no problem telling me when I'm being an ass or when I'm not looking at things the right way and I apriciate that. We have ha fights, we have not spoken for a while because of them but that's just what friends do. The main reason I reported this thread was because of your username. If you're willing to continue having open discussions and being as pretty cool as you are being then we has no problem but you should Probobly think about setting up another account with a more appropriate username. There is also no way to tell how long it will take for a tulpa to develope. The best guideline I can give is overnight response isn't likely a tulpa and over a year is too long if you haven't heard anything at that point. Other than that it's up to you and as far as who's trolling as far as I have seen about 90% of the active users are telling the truth. I have my list of people I trust. You hit have to get to know us an figure it out without the judgment of others clouding yours. I also prefer to belive that everything is possible until proven otherwise. It makes my life more magical but my way of thinking is my for everyone.
